Beat The Weeds And Save Time In The Garden | Home and Family ...

New gardeners are so often put out of gardening to the idea that it must involve hours and hours of hard work. The popular idea of ??a low maintenance garden is one to cover the space with terraces and gravel, planted with grasses and pots of green plants.

However, I discovered a perfect way to help thwart a major task in the garden ? weeds.

This has happened almost by accident, because I have a cat who thinks the earth is not protected is a great sandbox! I immediately had to find a way to cover the ground as possible, but I noticed that the country will cover the plants gave me an even greater benefit to significantly reduce weeds.

Of course there are many gardeners who love weeding time, and I admire enormously ? there are great physical and mental benefits to be outside among the plants.

But for those of us who spent time in the garden is limited to work commitments or physical limitations, perhaps, is a way to enjoy the factory with minimal effort. Of course, time has been used in land preparation and the initial seeding, but this would probably take much less time on the terraces and gravel!

Weeds are great survivors and rushed to take any bare patch of land. Once they do, they can smother existing plants and become very difficult to get rid of it.

The idea is to find plants that form dense clumps or spread via their roots to cover the ground. As with most plants, there are ground covers for every season, when they are at their best, and some that look good all year.

A word of caution. Because some of these plants spread rapidly ? which is obviously what we want ? they really do not know when to stop! What you can take to reduce the possibility of keeping within its allotted space.

What plant?

I discovered that plants such as the trumpet (Ajuga) ? you can get the purple-leaved plants, bronze or variegated Euphorbia ? beautiful lime green flowers in early to late spring, the lower periwinkle (Vinca minor); bergenias ? commonly known as elephant ears, as well as a small variegated leaves ivy, all offering to cover the whole year to March. Another advantage is that these particular plants are also resistant to slug and snail!

In spring and summer, you can use aubretia, Arabis, Alyssum, and candytuft (Iberian) in which all embrace the earth., Is particularly useful, and give some height limit is Columbine ? an old cottage garden variety ? which is clumps after flowering to keep foliage attractive. They are also the seeds of his grandmother, giving more plants every year.

Another favorite plant is my geraniums resistant. Some varieties do not die down in winter ? weeds do not grow much later anyway ? but as soon as the plants outside to let off steam in the spring, and to provide ground cover, and masses of flowers all summer.

Other useful plants for use as ground covers, herbs. From a wide variety of choices, comfrey, feverfew, catnip, marjoram gold and purple.

So there you have it! Once your ground cover plants are established, you no longer need to spend hours on your lap, but it can have a good time in your garden.
