(AP) ? It's the ultimate piggyback ride: A space shuttle perched atop a Boeing 747 as the pair crisscrosses the country.

For three decades, this was how NASA transported shuttles that landed in the California desert to their Florida home base. But it's coming to an end.

This week, four pilots took turns flying a jumbo jet mounted with space shuttle Endeavour on a multi-leg journey bound for Los Angeles where it will go on display in a museum next month.

With the shuttle fleet retired, it's the final ferry mission for a group of highly specialized aviators. The elite pilots over the years have included former astronauts, including famed pilot Gordon Fullerton.

Scores have asked what it's like to haul a 170,000-pound shuttle.

"That's a tough thing to answer," said pilot Jeff Moultrie, who will be in command when Endeavour performs an aerial tour over several California landmarks Friday. "What do you tell somebody? It's different. It's unique."

That's for sure.

For one thing, there's the noise. It is decibels louder inside the shuttle carrier aircraft compared with a commercial airliner because the interior is hollowed out to keep it as light as possible. Aside from a few seats, there are no galleys, overhead bins or even air conditioning.

In case pilots forget they're carrying precious national cargo, the constant vibrations from above jolt them back to reality.

Pilots have to be more careful when they make turns, but otherwise, the 747 handles like a regular plane. They also have to be hyper-vigilant about the weather because moisture can damage the shuttle's delicate tiles.

Built for American Airlines, NASA acquired the aircraft in 1974 and used it for test flights from Edwards Air Force Base in California's Mojave Desert and ferry flights to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. It obtained a second one in 1990, but it was retired earlier this year.

The four current NASA pilots who can operate the modified 747 are ex-military aviators who split their time flying other planes including zero-gravity aircraft and T-38 supersonic jets.

Even when the shuttles flew routinely, a cross-country lift wasn't always needed. To keep their skills polished, they flew practice flights every several weeks and trained in a simulator twice a year.

Moultrie, who served as a commercial pilot for a decade, said he looked forward most to soaring in close to the Hollywood Sign. Even Angelenos have to keep their distance from the famed sign, which is surrounded by a fence.

"It's bittersweet," he said of the final mission. "We definitely feel privileged to be a small part of history. But on the flip side, we're sad."

Eddie Vedder Performs at Obama Fundraiser, Calls Mitt Romney Comments "Upsetting"

Eddie Vedder clearly thinks you can't find a better man than Barack Obama for President ... or at least that he's a better man for the job than Mitt Romney.

Performing a set of songs at a campaign fundraiser for Obama in South Tampa last night, the Pearl Jam frontman bashed Romney's 47 percent comments.

"It's very upsetting to hear a presidential candidate be so easily dismissive of such a ginormous amount of the population," Vedder told the audience.

Vedder and Obama

Vedder helped raise $1.7 million Thursday for Obama's reelection campaign, playing four songs for the president and 85 guests at a $20,000-per-person dinner.

"I can't say I've ever played that many songs in a suit before," he said of "Rise," "Without You," James Taylor's "Millworker" and Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World."

He recalled signing up for a government security guard training program, working the midnight shift and becoming a security supervisor at a petroleum company.

It was this, he said, that made his dreams reality.

"I'm an example of someone who never made it to university," Vedder said. "I did have this dream to be a musician. I felt that this dream had an expiration date."

"It was that job which allowed me to keep affording to guitars and microphones ... For me, it all began with that ability to get the proper training for a decent job."

"It's very upsetting to hear a presidential candidate be so easily dismissive of such a ginormous amount of the population."

Vedder introduced Obama, who thanked him for "for that unbelievable performance but more importantly for that story."

"For you to share that story with us, Eddie, speaks volumes not only about you but about this country," Obama said. That story captures better than anything what this campaign is about and what this country is about."

Jackson Ripley would surely agree ... what about you?

Who are you voting for in November?

The original 'Twitter'? Tiny electronic tags monitor birds' social networks

ScienceDaily (Sep. 20, 2012) ? If two birds meet deep in the forest, does anybody hear? Until now, nobody did, unless an intrepid biologist was hiding underneath a bush and watching their behavior, or the birds happened to meet near a research monitoring station. But an electronic tag designed at the University of Washington can for the first time see when birds meet in the wild.

A new study led by a biologist at Scotland's University of St. Andrews used the UW tags to see whether crows might learn to use tools from one another. The findings, published last week in Current Biology, supported the theory by showing an unexpected amount of social mobility, with the crows often spending time near birds outside their immediate family.

The study looked at crows in New Caledonia, an archipelago of islands in the South Pacific. The crows are famous for using different tools to extract prey from deadwood and vegetation. Biologists wondered whether the birds might learn by watching each other.

The results, as reported by St. Andrews, revealed "a surprising number of contacts" between non-related crows. During one week, the technology recorded more than 28,000 interactions among 34 crows. While core family units of New Caledonian crows contain only three members, the study found all the birds were connected to the larger social network.

The new paper is the first published study using the UW tags to record animal social interactions.

"This is a new type of animal-tracking technology," said co-author Brian Otis, a UW associate professor of electrical engineering whose lab developed the tags. "Ecology is just one of the many fields that will be transformed with miniaturized, low-power wireless sensors."

Biologists normally tag animals with radio transmitters that broadcast at a particular frequency, and field researchers use a receiver to listen for that frequency and detect when the animal is present. An encounter between small animals would only be recorded if the researcher was nearby.

The UW system, called Encounternet, uses programmable digital tags that can send and receive pulses.

"Encounternet tags can monitor each other, so you can use them to study interactions among animals," said co-author John Burt, a UW affiliate professor of electrical engineering. "You can't even start to do that with other radio-tracking technology."

Other research groups are using the UW tags around the world. Researchers at the University of Windsor in Canada are using them to study mating behavior in Costa Rican long-tailed manikins; a researcher at Drexel University is using them to study the interaction between birds and army ants in Costa Rica; German researchers are putting the tags on sea lions in the Galapagos Islands to study their behavior as they pull up on beaches; and researchers in the Netherlands are studying the social behavior of great tits, a small woodland bird. "It's a big topic right now, the idea that animals have social networks," Burt said. He has been working with field biologists for the last three years to deploy the tags.

"There are other tags that can do proximity logging, but they're all very big and for larger animals. None is as small as Encounternet -- or even near to it."

The smallest of the UW tags weighs less than 1 gram (0.035 ounces) and can be used on animals as light as 20 grams (less than an ounce), about the weight of a sparrow.

Researchers attach the tags to birds with straps that degrade and harmlessly fall off after the battery dies. The tag records nearby pulses, and the signal strength gives an estimate of the other animal's distance.

A typical study using the system includes a few dozen tags and between 10 and 100 fixed base stations. When tagged animals pass a base station the data is transmitted wirelessly from the tag to the base station, and from there to the Internet. Researchers can also reprogram the tags remotely -- for example, they can look at initial results to see when there are few encounters happening, and turn the battery off during those times to conserve power.

Burt completed his doctorate at the UW in 2000, with a dissertation on birdsong communication and learning. He wished that there was a way to automatically monitor bird interactions in the wild, and in 2005 joined forces with Otis, an expert in small, lightweight, low-power electronics. Burt managed the project to develop the tags, with funding from the National Science Foundation, as a research scientist in Otis' group. This fall they founded Encounternet LLC in Portland, Ore., where Burt now lives. He is working to add a GPS component to record the location of encounters, and to add an accelerometer and other sensors that could detect an animal's behavior.

"People are excited about this because for the first time, it allows them to study smaller animal interactions and social networks on an incredibly fine scale," Burt said. "Social networks are turning out to be key to understanding many animal behaviors. People say Encounternet is the only thing they can find that can collect that information."

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A former Yale University student remained jailed on $1 million bail, an amount normally reserved for murder or other crimes that could result in life sentences, after authorities say he made online death threats to children.

Eric Yee, a 21-year-old who recently withdrew from the Ivy League university, posted on ESPN's website that he was watching children and wouldn't mind killing them, Los Angeles County sheriff's officials said Tuesday.

Yee was taken into custody Monday at his parents' home, which is on a street that overlooks two schools in Santa Clarita, Calif. Several guns were found there.

Sheriff's Lt. Steve Low said Yee was arrested for investigation of making terrorist threats.

Experts said the bail amount was very high for a person suspected of making terrorist threats.

"To put it in perspective, $1 million is the presumptive bail for murder," said Hanni Fakhoury, an attorney for the Electronic Frontier Foundation and a former federal public defender who is not involved in the case. In comparison, the presumptive bail for making terrorist threats is $50,000 and it would take many specific circumstances to push it much higher, Fakhoury said.

Sheriff's Deputy Josh Dubin told the Los Angeles Times that the department had requested "a bail enhancement because of the totality of the situation," but would not elaborate.

Yee was arrested after the sports network ESPN reported threats were posted in a reader response section to an online story about new Nike sneakers named after LeBron James that cost $270 a pair. Some of the nearly 3,000 reader comments on the story talked about children possibly getting killed over the expensive sneakers, said ESPN spokesman Mike Soltys.

The post that led police to Yee referred to a shooting that would be like the one in Aurora, Colo., where 12 people were killed and 58 others were injured in July, authorities said.

"What he was posting had nothing to do with sports," Soltys said. "We closely monitor the message boards and anytime we get a threat, we're alerting law enforcement officials."

An employee at ESPN headquarters in Bristol, Conn., notified local police the same day and they linked the comments to the home of Yee's parents. Sheriff's investigators watched the home until they got a search warrant.

Yee and his family could not be reached for comment. A call to a phone number for him went to voicemail.

Both schools near the home were open Tuesday, although at least three children didn't attend class after they were notified by the school about the arrest, said Dianne Saunders, principal of Santa Clarita Elementary School.

Authorities didn't disclose how serious the threat was, but they were looking to see if the suspect had made similar posts on the Internet. Low also said investigators were trying to determine if anybody else might be involved.

"We take all these kinds of threats serious, especially with the climate of other shootings around the nation over the past year," Low said.

Sheriff's investigators were working with Bristol police and police at Yale University, which said Yee was a student until he withdrew this May for undisclosed reasons. Yale officials said he had been expected to graduate with a bachelor's degree in economics this past spring.

A Yale website listed him as a member of its class of 2012 and a participant in a leadership training program.

Film festival opens in movie-crazy North Korea

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) ? An international film festival opens Thursday in what may seem the unlikeliest of places: North Korea.

Held every two years, the Pyongyang International Film Festival offers North Koreans their only chance to see a wide array of foreign films on the big screen ? from Britain, Germany and elsewhere (but not America). And it's the only time foreigners are allowed into North Korean theaters to watch movies alongside locals.

This year, festivalgoers will get the chance to see two feature films shot in North Korea but edited overseas: the romantic comedy "Comrade Kim Goes Flying," a joint North Korean-European production, and "Meet in Pyongyang," made in conjunction with a Chinese studio.

While it's true that homegrown movies predictably tend toward communist propaganda with a healthy dose of tear-jerker, North Korea is a film-crazy country. Well-to-do residents pay as much as 500 won (about $5 according to official exchange rates) to see new releases from the government-run Korean Film Studio, as well as Russian and Chinese imports.

Those who don't have the means to go to the theater tune into the Mansudae TV channel, which shows mostly Chinese and Eastern European films on weekends. Some recent offerings have included "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," and the only western offering shown on state TV in recent memory, the British film "Bend It Like Beckham," which aired in 2010.

This year, a huge screen in front of the Pyongyang train station has become another popular place to watch movies. On Monday, hundreds of locals stood transfixed by a North Korean drama in a plaza in front of the station.

The late leader Kim Jong Il, who died in December, was a notorious film buff.

He was 7 when he saw his first film ? "My Hometown" ? the inaugural film made at by the Korean Film Studio. The film, about a young man who returns to his village after Korea is liberated from Japan, made a lifelong impression on the future leader, according to Choe Hung Ryol, director of the studio's external affairs department.

In 1973 Kim published a treatise called "On the Art of the Cinema," in which he extolled filmmaking as a way to aid the people's "development into true communists."

"Creative work is not a mere job, but an honorable revolutionary task," he wrote.

In 1978, Kim "recruited" a South Korean director, Shin Sang-ok, and his actress ex-wife, Choi Eun-hee. According to the late director's memoirs, he was lured to Pyongyang to make propaganda films, but he and his wife slipped away from their bodyguards during a 1986 trip to Vienna.

Kim's father, North Korea founder Kim Il Sung, also wrote a film called "The Flower Girl," and current leader Kim Jong Un also has a keen interest in film, according to Korean Film Studio spokesman Choe .

In an interview with The Associated Press, Choe acknowledged that the main purpose of North Korean cinema is propaganda.

"Our films carry a different purpose than movies made in other countries," he said. "We make films for the purpose of ideological education."

And to play with the emotions of the audience, evidently.

"If you watch a lot of North Korean films, you'll find yourself crying a lot," he said. "If you don't cry, you're clearly a person without emotion."

A visit to the film studio is a lot like going back in time, from the thatched cottages of a bygone rural Korea, to the ancient royal palaces of the Choson Dynasty, to a louche depiction of 1950s South Korea compete with brothels, pubs and pharmacies.

"American tourists who come here always tap the walls to see if the buildings are real," Choe said. "They say the sets in Hollywood are just facades."

For British filmmaker Nicholas Bonner and his Belgian co-producer Anja Daelemans, the upcoming North Korean premiere of "Comrade Kim Goes Flying" will be a moment nearly seven years in the making.

The film, a romantic comedy about a coal miner who dreams of becoming an acrobat, was shot in North Korea in 2010 with a local cast, directed by veteran North Korean filmmaker Kim Gwang Hun, and edited in Belgium.

"It's not what you expect from North Korea, and it's not something people have seen before," Bonner said.

Writing the script took three years, as the North Korean and European members of the team worked to come up with a story line that was both entertaining and politically safe for showing in North Korea. Bonner credits his the Koreans with contributing some of the film's funniest moments

"In the end, you're dealing with professionals," Bonner said. "They do their job. You're in the film world, and we're all making a film."

But for sheer scale, "Comrade Kim" can't possibly compete with the heavyweight of North Korean cinema, the 63-part epic "Nation and Destiny," which began in the 1990s. Filming is already under way on part 64.

Nintendo games consoles story | Tech With Us

One of the most important company in video-games industry is Nintendo. Primarily, those company are was founded to produce cards games for game called Hanafunda. First steps of Nintendo are dating back 1889 and the company developed very quickly. Their went into video-games sector in 60?s but first success were in end of 70?s. Nintendo is well-known of games consoles production. In history, they?re released at least a few crucial games consoles.

?First important console, which were commercial success, were Nintendo Entertainment System (NES/Famicom in Japan). Thanks to this console, we can play Super Mario Bros games in our homes. This console appeared in our homes in 1985. Of course earlier in Japan ? 1983. Until nowadays we can buy this console using auctions portals.

Better version of NES was issued in 1991 in USA and in 1992 in Europe. The console was named as Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). The graphics and sound capabilities were much better than in elderly NES. Of course, we were available to play in very popular games as Tanks or Super Mario Bros games for instance.?

Nintendo64 was first console from this company, which was using 3D graphics. Interestingly, that it was only video console of 5th generation which wasn?t using CDs as games carrier. Instead CDs, Nintendo was using ROM cartridges. Unfortunately, it wasn?t the best idea and Nintendo64 lost ?race? with Sony PlayStation.

In 2001, Nintendo issued new console. This time, it wasn?t using ROM cartridges but mini-DVD. Nintendo GameCube was main competitor for PlayStation 2 and Microsoft Xbox. It?s the cheapest console of 6th generation.

The successor of Nintendo GameCube is Nintendo Wii released in 2007. The most important innovation was introduction of wireless controller which could detect moves. Nintendo Wii reach great sells results and this situation should obtain until new Nintendo Console will be release.

Health Wealth and Beauty Guide: Fitness Review Central Website ...

04 September 2012 ? You may have been one of those people so obsessed with losing weight and getting really good Hollywood-style-physique that you lost track of what was real. That is how Abi Shaan, the website owner of www.fitnessreviewcentral.com, feels exactly as he has bought and tried numerous products and programs available out there that has gotten him nowhere.

There are literally thousands of programs and products in the market that are either unworthy and unnecessary while some provide excellent techniques to build muscle or get ripped or simply lose weight. This is also how and why the Fitness Review Central website came to being. FitnessReviewCentral.com launched the website to the public as a place to learn the best way to get results, be it fat loss or muscle building.

Abi decided to try some of them and write an evaluation of his experiences with each of these programs or products. Fitness Review Central aims to help others get fit as the site owner is all too aware of the benefits and positive impact good health and fitness brings. The site owner is also affiliated with the products promoted.

Some of the products and programs mentioned are Craig Ballantyne?s Turbulence Training system, Brad Pilon?s Eat Stop Eat program, Tom Venuto?s Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle, Fat Loss 4 Idiots, Mike Geary?s Truth About Six Pack Abs, Jay Ferruggia?s Muscle Gaining Secrets, John Alvino?s How to Get Ripped Abs, Rob Poulos? Fat Burning Furnace and a lot more. So if you are looking for fitness programs reviews or planning to try out at least one then this site comes handy and is a great resource.

Now here?s the catch: one of the biggest misconceptions about losing weight, fat loss, or muscle building is that once you?ve done it, that?s it. But the reality is it?s just as hard to keep it off. Overall, maintaining weight loss or staying fit is about finding your balance. An important incite one can gain in any health and fitness program is the fact that if you?re not determined, it?s never going to work. You have to want and aim to change yourself for a really significant fat loss to happen.

?It?s all about simplicity without the clutter. It?s time to stop re-inventing the wheel when it?s already perfected,? says Abi.

You can see the detailed reviews on the website. You can go ahead, read and explore the site with very honest and reliable feedback from the site owner?s point of view and personal experience from the programs and products he has tried so far.

About FitnessReviewCentral.com:

It?s time to stop re-inventing the wheel when it?s already perfected. The whole purpose of FitnessReviewCentral.com ever since 2008, is to teach the public how they can achieve their fitness related goals without wasting time in clutter that demotivates them from doing the things that would not work in the first place. Yet another way by which spyware and adware can get installed on ...

Yet another way in which malware can get attached to a system is actually by going to an infected or perhaps affected web page

Another way in which spyware and could get attached to a method is by visiting an infected or perhaps jeopardized web page. Luckily there are many ways the consumer can safeguard on their own from these kinds of sites. The first thing an user has to do is to set up the particular Opera internet browser. Iran could strike US bases if Israel attacks: Hezbollah

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Iran could hit U.S. bases in the Middle East in response to any Israeli strike on its nuclear facilities even if American forces played no role in the attack, the leader of Lebanon's Iranian-backed militant group Hezbollah said on Monday.

"A decision has been taken to respond and the response will be very great," Hezbollah Secretary-General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said in an interview with the Beirut-based Al Mayadeen television.

"The response will not be just inside the Israeli entity - American bases in the whole region could be Iranian targets," he said, citing information he said was from Iranian officials. "If Israel targets Iran, America bears responsibility."

Heightened Israeli rhetoric about Tehran's nuclear facilities, which the West says could be part of a weapons program, has stoked speculation that it may attack Iran before U.S. elections in November.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged world powers on Sunday to set a "clear red line" to convince Iran they would prevent it from obtaining nuclear arms.

Israel, thought to be the Middle East's only nuclear-armed power, views Iran's nuclear program as a threat to its regional dominance and to its very existence. Tehran says the atomic work is for peaceful purposes only.

But Netanyahu's cabinet is divided over the wisdom of attacking Iran, and Israeli officials have dropped heavy hints of a climbdown strategy, under which Netanyahu would shelve threats of an attack now in return for a stronger public pledge from President Barack Obama on conditions that would provoke U.S. action in future.

Nasrallah said there were divisions in Israel over attacking Iran. "Personally I do not expect the Israeli enemy - at least in the coming months or foreseeable future - (to wage) an attack on the Islamic Republic of Iran," he said.

Nasrallah pointed to the fragile global economy, which would be weakened further by any sharp rise in crude oil prices stemming from conflict in the Gulf, and to likely Israeli casualties in any war with Iran.

"Netanyahu and (Defence Minister Ehud) Barak inflate the benefit and play down the cost," he said, referring to Barak's estimates that Israel could suffer up to 500 fatalities in any conflict aimed at wiping out Iran's nuclear facilities.

Hezbollah guerrillas fought a 34-day war with Israel six years ago in which 1,200 people in Lebanon, mostly civilians, and 160 people in Israel, mostly soldiers, were killed.

War with Iran would be more deadly, Nasrallah said. "We don't know what will happen in the region."

NO CHEMICAL WEAPONS

He repeated a warning he made last month that Hezbollah could cause widespread destruction if it came into conflict with Israel again, but denied that the Shi'ite Islamist guerrilla and political movement would ever use chemical weapons.

"We do not have chemical weapons and we will not use chemical weapons," Nasrallah said. "The use of chemical weapons is forbidden - for us that is absolute.

Unrest in neighboring Syria, which acknowledged for the first time in July that it possessed chemical or biological weapons, has led to Western fears that those weapons might fall into the hands of Islamist groups including Hezbollah.

"I do not need chemical weapons - regardless of the religious or practical position," Nasrallah said, addressing Israel. "You have factories, and you have bases, and compounds, and I have rockets."

Israel had several "weak points" which could be targeted, including "economic, industrial, electrical, chemical and nuclear" sites, the Hezbollah leader said.

Even if Israel launched a first strike attack on Lebanon, destroying a large part of Hezbollah's missile arsenal, the militant group would retain the capacity to hit back with deadly force, he added.

Two weeks ago Nasrallah said Hezbollah could kill tens of thousands of Israelis by hitting targets with what he described as precision-guided missiles.

"Hitting these targets with a small number of rockets will turn ... the lives of hundreds of thousands of Zionists to real hell," he said at the time.

Spain fears illegal migrants may flood to islands

MADRID (AP) ? Authorities said 160 would-be migrants tried to break into a fenced-off Spanish enclave on the north African coast Monday, and Spain's foreign minister worried more may head to Spanish islands near Morocco.

Officials said the migrants tried to breach two sections of the fence between Morocco and the Spanish enclave of Melilla early in the morning, with about 10 succeeding in entering Spanish territory.

A similar storming was thwarted Sunday, but 70 other illegal migrants, swimming or wading, managed to reach the uninhabited Spanish island of Isla de Tierra off Morocco.

Many migrants from Africa try dangerous crossings to reach Spanish territory illegally in hopes of gaining work and a better life ? often turning to people-smuggling rings along the way.

But migration is a sensitive issue for Spain, especially now as it grapples with a double-dip recession and near 25 percent unemployment after the collapse of a real estate bubble.

Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia Margallo said he had spoken with his Moroccan counterpart, Saadeddine El Othmani, to seek ways to avert a greater influx of migrants.

"We must avoid creating a clarion call effect which would attract immigrants, filling our islands," Margallo said. "Only regular, legal immigration can incorporate migrants into a new country with dignity."

Spain has three enclaves on Africa's northern Mediterranean coast and several tiny islands off it.

Isla de Tierra ? part of the Alhucemas Islands archipelago ? measures 1.7 hectares (4.2 acre) and is just 30 meters (100 feet) off Morocco at low tide.

Illegal immigrants can be sent back only to their countries of origin, but Margallo said those who reached Isla de Tierra lacked passports or other identification, so they could not be deported immediately.

As a result, they are restricted to the rocky island, and the Spanish army is supplying them with a bare minimum of items to survive until a decision is made about their future, Margallo said.

The foreign minister alleged that the attempts at rushing the Melilla fences and the landings on Isla de Tierra were "coordinated efforts by people-smuggling mafias."

He said concerted attempts to breach Spain's borders were a concern for the European Union and required a united response.

"This is not the first time Europe has faced this kind of situation," Margallo said, highlighting Italy's experience with migrants fleeing Libya during the revolution that overthrew dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

Gingrich Appears to Support Akin

Former Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich appeared on Sunday to defend Missouri Republican Senate candidate Todd Akin, who has been pressured by Republicans to bow out of the race after saying that women don?t get pregnant from ?legitimate rape.?

?I think Todd Akin is the choice of the people of Missouri. And Todd Aiken has publicly apologized,? Gingrich said on NBC?s Meet the Press. ?People make mistakes.?

Gingrich said he is ?fed up with the one-sided bias? that has Akin under fire for his comments but gives a pass to Vice President Joe Biden, who told an audience that included many black supporters that if Republicans win they will put them economically ?back in chains.?

?Where?s the outrage over overt, deliberate racism?? Gingrich asked. ?How come Biden shouldn't get off the ticket??

Last week, Gingrich?s former presidential campaign aide, Rick Tyler, joined the Akin campaign.

How the AP-GfK poll was conducted

The Associated Press-GfK Poll on prospects for the next generation was conducted by GfK Roper Public Affairs & Corporate Communications from Aug. 16-20. It is based on landline and cellphone telephone interviews with a nationally representative random sample of 1,006 adults. Interviews were conducted with 604 respondents on landline telephones and 402 on cellular phones.

Digits in the phone numbers dialed were generated randomly to reach households with unlisted and listed landline and cellphone numbers.

Interviews were conducted in both English and Spanish.

As is done routinely in surveys, results were weighted, or adjusted, to ensure that responses accurately reflect the population's makeup by factors such as age, sex, education and race. In addition, the weighting took into account patterns of phone use ? landline only, cell only and both types ? by region.

No more than one time in 20 should chance variations in the sample cause the results to vary by more than plus or minus 3.9 percentage points from the answers that would be obtained if all adults in the U.S. were polled.

There are other sources of potential error in polls, including the wording and order of questions.

The questions and results are available at http://www.ap-gfkpoll.com .

That Mama Gretchen: Abbie from Roppo Farm: An Adoption Story

Abbie is one of those mamas that makes your heart swell. She loves with everything she is and you know her children are blessed to call her mama. I am equally as blessed to call her a friend and I'm so happy she is here today sharing her story of motherhood.

- - - - -?

When my husband and I got pregnant in April 2010, we assumed, like most women do, that pregnancy would be easy and we would end up with a beautiful baby to take home from the hospital in 9 short months. That July, at 15 weeks pregnant, we found that our little miracle had stopped growing and there was no heartbeat. We were devastated. No one is prepared for the loss of a child. But, we pulled ourselves together bit by bit and thanked God that he had given us the blessing of being pregnant, however short it was. We knew that God would bless us with a family when the timing was right. We named our little blessing Matthew, which means "gift from God."

In January 2011, after much convincing, my husband and I started the process of being licensed to be foster parents, which is something I have wanted to do? since high school, but we had originally decided we would do "after we had gotten started on our own family." In early March 2011 we found out that we were pregnant again. We were very excited about having our own child, but decided that we would move forward with the licensing anyways. We knew that we might be getting in over our heads, but we knew that God was calling us to care for children that, for whatever reason, weren't able to be cared for by their parents.

In May 2011, at 10 weeks pregnant, our little Elizabeth went to Heaven to be with her brother. Our foster parent license came in the mail the same day. We were heartbroken, but reassured that maybe God's plan for our family was not the same as the plans we had.

On May 18th we received our first long-term placement call. The Coordinator on the phone told me about the children, and then said, "Oh, I am so sorry, are you pregnant?" (She must have been looking at our file.) "Because this will be a long-term placement, and they would need to be the only children under 2 in your household." At that moment, I knew something special was happening, and told the woman, no, we were no longer pregnant. I signed the placement paperwork that afternoon to take custody of premature boy-girl twins, born May 5th three months early. M and E were born at 2.5 and 3.5 lbs, and no one was quite sure what medical issues they were going to have moving forward. They spent 6 weeks in the NICU, learning to breath on their own, regulate their own heartbeats, and drink from a bottle, and then came home to live with us. Everyday with newborn, medically-fragile twins at home was a challenge, but I wouldn't have traded it for anything in the whole world. I was finally a Mommy!

It has been just over a year since M and E came home from the hospital and became a part of our family, and they are growing more fun and challenging by the day as they head into toddler-hood. I still look back at that day I received that call, and know that God was at work. We have been blessed beyond words to have them in our lives, and we are hoping to complete their adoption this coming fall and make them officially part of our family (although they have been my children, in my heart, since the first day I held them in the NICU.)

This April, early in our third pregnancy, we lost another angel, Owen. This loss felt different from the first two, because this time I came home from that appointment to hugs and smiles and kisses from my sweet babies. I knew then more than ever that these children were God's Gift to us, and that despite going through terrible, depressing times, wondering if we would ever have a family, I now had the beautiful family I always dreamed.? Someday we might have children that our biologically ours, or maybe not, but I am continually blessed by God's grace and mercy in our lives. I remember every day what a miracle my children are, and how it is only by God's grace that they came to be ours.

I hope my story can give other women who have gone through devastating losses, but are coming out the other side of their grief, a reassurance that God loves you and although it seems hard now, He says "For I know the plans I have for you,? declares the LORD, ?plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." (Jeremiah 29:11)

If you have any questions about foster care, adoption, or about our story, please feel free to e-mail me at abbieroppo@gmail.com. Or follow my blog about life on our urban farm, raising chickens, toddlers and whatever else comes our way, at Roppo Farm.

Czech hops harvest to be down by 26 pct

(AP) ? Fear not, beer lovers! The Czech hops harvest is expected to plummet by around a quarter this year due to bad weather ? but there's plenty of stock to quench the huge thirst both at home and abroad.

As well as being home to more beer drinkers per capita than anywhere else in the world, the Czech Republic is also one of the top producers of hops ? the dried seed cones that give beer its bitter taste and aroma. Their hops are highly sought after and exported to about 80 countries, including Japan, China, Germany and Russia.

The Hop Growers Union of the Czech Republic said Friday preliminary figures show a yield of about 0.95 - 1.00 metric tons per hectare compared with the average of 1.11 metric tons per hectare. They cited freezing temperatures in February and a drought in spring.

The country's overall production is expected to fall by 26 percent to 4,500 metric tons from 6,088 metric tons in 2011.

Authorities say there are enough supplies following the exceptionally high harvests of the previous two years ? and that prices are unlikely to rise.

"This year's harvest won't have any significant impact on the price of hops," said Bohumil Pazler, the chairman of the union.

Hops, soaring seven 7 meters (23 feet) into the air and supported by wire, have been cultivated on Czech territory for over 1,000 years. The heartland near the western towns of Zatec and Rakovnik provides an ideal climate for the local dominant brand known as Saaz, a fine aroma hop with a low concentration of alpha acids which give beer its bitter flavor.

Almost 80 percent of hops production is exported ? and more than two thirds of that is Saaz, which the Czechs call the "Roll Royce" among hops.

"The Czech Saaz is the best in the world," Jiri Vesely, the Czech Beer and Malt Association executive director said.

In 2007, Saaz was granted the EU's Protected Designation of Origin label as the top hops brand. It is used by brewers for premium products.

Exports to the United States crashed to virtually zero in the 1990s after the beer giant Anheuser Busch stopped using Czech hops as a response to the ongoing trademark dispute with the Czech state-run brewer Budejovicky Budvar and a refusal of the Czech government to sell Budvar to its U.S. rival.

NCAA Football!

Our season opener tomorrow, versus Miami of Ohio, is expected to occur under Isaac remnant T-storms.

I can't wait! I so want see some football!

Last year, I missed the season opener. While the Buckeyes were trouncing Akron, I was in Custer State Park, SD, LMAO watching a wild burro drool all over my sister's car as it munched on an apple.
