Obama: A lot of the 'fuss' over Libya is politics (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama says a lot of the `fuss' made by members of Congress over U.S. military involvement in Libya is political.

He also says involvement in the operation doesn't violate a law requiring congressional approval for military action. The White House says Obama has the legal authority to keep the military involved without a go-ahead from Congress because the U.S. is playing only a support role there.

Obama said Wednesday that the U.S. is participating in a limited operation to help a lot of people against Moammar Gadhafi. The president said Gadhafi is one of the worst tyrants in the world and a person that no one should want to defend.

Obama answered questions from reporters at a news conference at the White House.

This past school year I attended an Early childhood and family education class with the little misters. One of the other parents was a stay at home Father of 7. He had 5 boys and two girls ranging in ages?(13 to 6 months). But what stood out to me were a few of his parenting tips.

1. Cleaning up after company is all in the prep work.

If they throw a party or are expecting guests the children must clean up toys and put most into hiding. Leaving only a few baskets of toys for their company to play with. He's found that there was less fighting and after the guests leave there is only minimal clean up for the kids.

2. Use "our toys" not "his toy" to lessen the "MINE" effect

When a child is given a gift, they get to open it and be the first to play with it. Eventually these toys become "family" toys and are for every one's use. Each child can have two or three that are truly their own but everything else is shared property. Any special toy must be taken care of and put away?or?it can be played with by any of the other children. I thought this was an interesting way to approach fights and other?issues that occur when we label toys as "his toy". By doing so he says he hears less of that dreaded word: MINE.

Any laptop that crams in an Nvidia GeForce or AMD Radeon chip can call itself gaming-ready. But what makes a true gaming laptop is the ability to smoothly play games at the highest screen resolution (1080p) and best quality settings. The Alienware M17X (Sandy Bridge) ($2,254 direct) is the epitome of a dedicated gaming laptop, offering a wide selection of Sandy Bridge quad-core processors, the fastest Nvidia and AMD graphics chips, and some of the most advanced features known to laptops. In addition, its menacing looks complement the menacing parts makes for a package that's bound to strike fear in your LAN opponents and boost your gaming cred. Design
The overall design hasn't changed since the last iteration I saw of the Alienware M17x, which was two years ago. In that time, there has yet to be another laptop that possesses a more menacing looking design. For instance, the M17X's front bezel seems to have a face with a middle portion that protrudes out, crevice between the lid and base, and two corner-placed LEDs that seems as it if they're peering at you. It's a beautifully made laptop, too, using a rubber-like texture over its stealth-black magnesium frame. The design isn't as subtle as the clean metallic builds of the Dell XPS 15 (Sandy Bridge) ($1,785 direct, 4 stars) and Acer Aspire AS8950G-9839. At 9.8 pounds, the M17X (Sandy Bridge) is one of the heaviest laptops, outweighing the Asus G73SW-BST6 ($1,299.99 list, 3.5 stars) and Acer AS8950G-9839 (which both weigh 8.3 pounds).

The 17.3-inch widescreen is equipped with the ideal 1,920-by-1,080 resolution and brightness intensity (at 400 nits). Its edge-to-edge glass screen was marred somewhat by its black-clad frame (black backgrounds intensify glare). Under any light source, the screen essentially turned into a mirror. Half the time I was trying not to take notice of my reflection. Changing the black Alienware background on the screen and minimizing surrounding light sources should help reduce the glare. The Dell XPS 15 (Sandy Bridge) has a matte screen option that minimizes glare, though the colors on its screen aren't as vivid.

Features
Every vent, button, and key has LED lighting. Even the power button, multimedia keys, and signature Alien head logo are illuminated. Each of these pieces can be coordinated with up to 20 different colors. The keyboard and adjacent numeric keypad are separated into 4 quadrants, each of which can be assigned a different light color. All of this is done through Alienware's Command Center?a software interface that lets you control the lighting effects, among other system settings. The full size keyboard is traditional-looking, as opposed to the Chiclet one found in the Dell XPS 15, Acer AS8950G-9839, and Asus G73SW-BST6. Alienware has gotten rid of the texture on the touchpad, although it navigates fine without it. The mouse buttons are softer than ever?there's no resistance when you click on them.

The M17X (Sandy Bridge) has a feature set worthy of the highest praise. Its list of video options is the most notable, which include mini-DisplayPort, HDMI-Out, VGA-Out, and a port rarely found in laptops: HDMI-in. With HDMI-in, the 17-inch screen can be used with your gaming console, DVD player, camcorder, or another laptop that has HDMI-out. There are five USB ports, two of which are USB 3.0 (with speeds 10 times that of USB 2.0), two USB 2.0, and one ESata/USB combo. A slot-loading Blu-ray drive is included in this configuration. The speakers are crisp and fully immerse you into any 3D game, but it lacks a subwoofer, for base. An SPDIF port on the left side of the laptop will allow you to hook up a better speaker system. The Acer AS8950G-9839, in comparison, has a five-speaker system (subwoofer included) built in. There's no shortage of hard drive space in the M17X (Sandy Bridge), as it comes with two 750GB,7200rpm drives, for a total of 1.5TB. Striped in RAID 0, these dual hard drives are also tuned for performance.

Performance
Our test unit came with a 2.2GHz Intel Core i7-2720QM processor. Combined with 8GB of DDR3 memory and the RAID 0 hard drives, it helped the laptop score 10,042 in PCMark Vantage?an overall performance gauge?effortlessly beating the Acer AS8950G-9839 (8,211), Asus G73SW-BST6 (7,845), and Dell XPS 15 (8,089) in. The M17X also dominated in processing-related tasks like Handbrake (1:53), Adobe Photoshop CS5 (3:26), and Cinebench R11.5 (5.4). In other words, it can run any piece of software better than any other laptop in this group.

The M17X (Sandy Bridge) runs on the AMD Radeon 6970M with 2GB of VRAM?one of the best mobile graphics chips available (there's also an option for the Nvidia GeForce GTX 460M). The true measure of a hardcore gaming rig is how it performs in games with the resolution and all the quality settings set to maximum. That said, not a single frame was lost while playing Call of Duty (Black Ops) and Crysis after turning up anti-aliasing (8X), anisotropic filtering, and shadow detail. At the highest possible settings, the M17X also received top marks in Crysis (58.7 frames per second) and Lost Planet 2 (57.4 fps). It scored 20,097 on 3DMark 06 tests, easily beating the Acer AS8950G-9839 (10,773), XPS 15 (9,787), and G73SW (15,525).

Powerful components aren't kind to the battery. Despite using one of the biggest batteries available (90WH), the M17X lasted 2 hours 24 minutes on MobileMark 2007. Experienced gamers will tell you that few games are played off of the AC adapter, and it'll stay anchored to a desk more often than not. But if great battery life is absolutely essential on a gaming rig, the dell XPS 15 delivered almost 7 hours of battery life, while the Acer AS8950G-9839 scored over 5 hours.

Sometimes I work very hard all day on a piece and even miss my deadline trying to get it right and still have a feeling I'm missing the boat and this is one of those times so please read this person's very long but quite articulate letter carefully and provide her with the thoughtful dialogue she is seeking. I think I kind of get it but I also think in trying to entertain more than one possibility I have blurred the whole thing. --ct

Dear Cary,

The other day I was having a conversation with my boyfriend about the viability of lifelong love and he expressed the conviction that it is inevitable, even in a happy marriage, that at some point over a lifetime both people will meet someone else who inspires the thought: "Wow, I could have made it with this one -- s/he has all of my current partner's positive qualities and none of the negative ones." When I asked him to elaborate, he said that he has talked to "a lot" of older people about this, and that they have universally reported having had at least one such experience at some point in their marriages. "Why would I be any different?" he asks. He also says that no one compares to me, and that he would discount a reaction of this type to another woman as being based on illusion, because the risk that the new person would turn out to be a disappointment is too great to justify discarding a relationship that is known to be good. After much discussion he stands firmly by his remarks.

I have a lot of thoughts about this. I have a lot of thoughts in general. But the reason I am a person who has a lot of thoughts is that I am a person who has a lot of feelings. I have intense feelings about things that other people seem to not even see, and I have to think about them in order to keep them from taking over. Like homeless people. I walk to work every day and see at least four homeless men on the way. I can give them a little money or buy them some breakfast, and then I know I have to keep going, and I do have a job that lets me work against systemic injustices, but every morning part of me wants to hit pause and yell around to the crowd: "Wait! Wait a minute everybody! There are people sleeping on the sidewalk in pools of urine! Not just one person, but one person every other block! What the heck?! What are we going to do about this? Someone sleeping on the street is an emergency! What is going on? Why are you just walking by? Are you all CRAZY?" And I know that it is not that they are individually crazy, it is that we are living in a sort of insane society, and that ignoring that insanity has become necessary in order to put one foot in front of the other every day. Every day can't be a revolution. Except that secretly I think it can. Secretly I want it to be. Secretly I am trying to have my days be little revolutions.

Other small things that I have intense emotions about: mean remarks about a person's appearance, even (maybe especially?) when they are flippant and not in earnest; contempt for categories of things (like religion -- I have a lot of friends that are contemptuous about religion. I am not religious myself, but it really bothers me to hear religious belief used as a proxy for ignorance and conservatism); remarks about "criminals" -- usually in a way that suggests the "criminals" in question have ceased, upon conviction, being human.

Anyway, I think what all of these examples I have mentioned have in common is that they are essentially harmless affirmations or invocations of broader harmful truths. Like, there is nothing shockingly malicious about referring to "dumpy middle-aged women" as a group. But when a friend of mine used that phrase the other day I felt a simmering fury. And I know it was not because the comment was such a terrible infraction, but because it is true that physical appearance -- especially when you are an American woman -- is a very powerful determinate. And that over-emphasis on physical beauty causes suffering. I've seen it. I think it's horrible and devaluing. My friend's remark called that truth up for me, and called up my hatred of it.

I don't usually indulge in the emotional reactions I have to these sorts of things. I understand the feelings I am having, I think they are legitimate, but I don't invest in them when they come up inside me, and I don't push them on others. If I gave them too much space I would not be able to function socially.

But sometimes, when it is someone I am intimate with, I do get caught up in them. This means that most of my loved ones have at some point been subjected to interrogation sessions prompted by their casual unthinking and seemingly meaningless comments or actions that I see as having, at their base, the unconscious adoption of a harmful truth. I don't do it very often anymore because it makes people feel attacked and judged and I don't want them to feel that way especially because that isn't what's motivating me when I dig in on some little thing that someone I love says -- what's motivating me is a feeling of vulnerability. I am scared to be in a family (family for me means anyone that I rely on for love and support) with someone who is comfortable with -- or worse, perpetuating -- harmful truths. And the more intimate the relationship, the more likely I am to feel alienated by words and deeds that reflect such comfort.

So, back to the thing my boyfriend said. When he said it, I felt like I was being dropped from the top of a 50-story building. I definitely don't expect my life partner to be blind to the beauty, intelligence, humor, warmth or genius of other people, whether or not they fall within the right age and gender range to be sexual possibilities. I wouldn't want that even if it were on offer. I want to be with someone who actively enjoys and appreciates other people. But I think there is a difference between appreciating the wonderful things about someone, and viewing that wonderfulness as a commodity with relative market value in one's own personal economy. (And yes, there are other things about my boyfriend besides this one remark that make me hear his comment in this way -- like he is extremely ambitious, hyper-aware of how others perceive him, has had a very privileged life, and is a huge flirt.) And I think that he's right that there is an element of this in most relationships -- but I don't think that is evidence that it is "inevitable." I think it is evidence of another one of those harmful truths -- the harmful truth that we tend to view others in terms of what they can do for us. I agree that this is prevalent, perhaps even biologically ingrained, but that doesn't make it good or right. And it doesn't mean that I should just accept it as an unavoidable condition of any long-term romance -- does it?

Is this making sense, Cary? I don't want to be in a partnership where I have to survive daily head-to-heads with the rest of the female population, where the ever-present possibility of upgrade has any gravitational force, where other people who seem great have to in actuality be not so great in order for me to retain my place of prominence in my partner's romantic imagination.

When I told my boyfriend that I didn't think what he described was inevitable for me, he told me I am an "outlier" and that it is crazy to expect that your partner will never be tempted. But I don't expect that. In fact, I sort of don't care whether the thing he is talking about actually happens. I mean, I know it would hurt to find out my love is attracted to someone they have deemed superior to me, but I know I can't control outcomes and that pain is always a part of intimacy, and I don't want to waste emotional energy worrying about ways that pain could happen; I'd rather just work on loving and being loved. So, I'm not fretting about the possibility of him finding someone who strikes him as a missed opportunity, I'm fretting about whether I should be giving myself to someone who views people as opportunities to begin with. And I know that what I hope for is rare. I know most people never find it, or learn it themselves. But I can have the kind of life I want without a partner, and I'd rather be alone than with someone who doesn't share my same intentions in love.

I want to know what you and your readers think -- about my boyfriend's comment, about my reaction, about any of what I have said. Sorry this is so long. I am struggling.

I tend to think when lovers say they are talking about philosophy they are really talking about, Will you love me forever until the stars fall from the sky no matter what happens even if I grow a mustache?

Love is what lovers talk about when they talk about philosophy. How will you feel about me if I get a humpback like an old lady? Will you ditch me?

That's what you are talking about, isn't it?

In an ideal world he would apologize for bringing it up; he would admit that it was a silly and stupid conversation, and you would forgive him and that would be that except you would file it away as his secret weakness and every time a pretty woman in a great dress said something dazzling and faintly suggestive you would be a little short with him and he would wonder why, but then he would realize why.

I find your thinking admirable. I am drawn to think with you about these things. But as you say, you think so much because you feel so much. It is your feeling that is driving you to ask what the hell is going on in your boyfriend's head.

Of course you are concerned. It sounds like he is trying to warn you that one day he is going to see some woman and make a calculation and dump you on the spot. So for him to say confidently that the calculation could never work out in her favor sounds hollow. How does he know, once he starts calculating, how the numbers will add up? And what is he to do if they don't add up the way he expects? It is not enough, now that he has brought it up, for him to claim that he would not be swayed. We know that logical thought is no match for the passions.

But that is just the danger of talking about this. It can't be decided or figured out. It was a bad choice. But part of its being a bad choice, and of his boneheaded insistence on a weak argument, may be that he is just a guy. Sometimes we have to let people be not quite so good as we wish they were in order that they can be who they are.

This I know: At times I am just a guy. World peace is important but sometimes I want to be just a guy on his way to a baseball game. And maybe he would like you to acknowledge that most people have this side, that we will walk by the Ferrari in the window and we will think about what it would be like to have one and if the opportunity ever arose ... well, we think about things. But if we are wise we keep these thoughts to ourselves.

I admire you greatly. Your prose, your mind, your high ideals. I admire you. My advice would be to be careful around your boyfriend because he is indeed telling you something about the pressures and longings he feels, but he is also just being himself, and may just have been having a bad day. So if he could just apologize and the both of you could just back away slowly from the unprovable philosophical proposition, you'd be better off.

pps. the other guy is correct, full Sail is not a stepping stone to further education so their credits probably won't be accepted by another university but you'll be prepared for a career when you graduate. full Sail offers a complete education in half the time of ordinary colleges, and it is more expensive also. the accelerated program isn't for everyone. you take one class per month so you have to work hard and it's non stop, no summer breaks. you get a week for spring break, christmas, and thanksgiving.

SANTA MONICA, Calif. ? The FBI says agents found $800,000 in cash during a search of Boston mob boss James "Whitey" Bulger's Santa Monica apartment following his arrest.

Steven Martinez, FBI Assistant Director in Charge in Los Angeles, said at a news conference Thursday afternoon that agents also found more than 30 firearms, including pistols, rifles and shotguns, several types of knives and several pieces of false identification.

Bulger, the FBI's most-wanted man, and his live-in companion Catherine Greig, were arrested without incident Wednesday night at their Santa Monica apartment.

Bulger was ordered returned to Massachusetts to face charges during a federal court hearing in Los Angeles Thursday.

Launched in March with $41 million in venture capital and a gushing media at its disposal, the Color app for iPhone and Android is seriously in the red.

The New York Times reported earlier this week that developer Color Labs ?is now overhauling its app? with the hope of attracting a meaningful audience. For the record, we thought the first iteration was an unpolished threat to privacy.

Color, which also recently bounced co-founder Peter Pham, is now the poster child for what many believe to be a bubble revolving around iPhone apps. Many of us in the press often see things as black and white. So when startups like Color raise tens of millions of dollars without a complete product or discernible business model, we should have the green light to compare it to other debacles from the previous tech boom.

This fashion apparel site was put on the chopping block in May 2000 only months after launching with $135 million in venture capital funding. Among the London-based company?s fatal flaws was publishing a website that took several minutes to load. A half-baked warning on its home page advising visitors that the Boo.com was ?designed for 56K modems and above" was little help to those who couldn?t sign-on in the first place. In 2001, co-founder Ernst Malmsten detailed his misadventures in a book called Boo Hoo: A dot.com Story from Concept to Catastrophe.

A decade or so ahead of its time, TheGlobe.com was the first online social network to take off when it was founded by Cornell students in 1994. The company?s 1998 IPO posted the largest one day gain at that time, with a share price that rose from $9 to $87 before the first trade hit the books. It was later revealed that Pixelon was founded by a convicted felon wanted by the authorities for multiple stock market-related scams. The company folded in 2000. Sounds like a killer party though!

While TheGlobe.com had a few minutes of infamy on CNN, an entire film was devoted govWorks and its corporate misfortunes. Profiled in the 2001 documentary Startup.com, govWorks burned through about $60 million in venture capital trying to get users to purchase municipal services on its site. By the time citizens became comfortable paying for things like parking tickets online, govWorks ran out of cash and in 2001 was sold for a song to First Data Corporation.

You have probably heard of Pets.com and its famous sock puppet mascot. What about Petopia? One of several online pet food and supplies sites that collectively raised hundreds of millions of dollars in 1999, Petopia was in line for a $100 million IPO in March of 2000 before the wheels stopped on that era?s boom. By the end of the year, Petopia?s assets were rolled into Petco, an existing investor. The URL of a company that once employed 200 people now points to nowhere. And you?d think a site like that would have nine lives!
