What I Wanted Is Not What I Want

When Kevin left for Spain last fall, I went through a period of intense domestic yearning. I wrote about it a bit here, but I?ll tell you now that it was basically the first time in a long time when I?d longed for a settled life. A house, a yard, a family.

I can see now, of course, that it wasn?t specific to Kevin. Wasn?t The One, obviously, and maybe I just wanted a little stability for a while. Maybe I just wanted to live in a world where I wouldn?t have to move every 6-12 months, could put up jams in my own kitchen and tend my own garden (with chickens and goats). A world where my boyfriend wouldn?t leave for Spain when I was already not 100% convinced about Us, thereby causing me to romanticize and project a whole bunch of dreams and desires onto him that he would, in the end, fail to live up to. Dreams of rings, ceremonies, public commitment?

?but I digress a bit. The point is, I was feeling very much that way, and then I went to California to visit two friends?Laura, who was about to have her baby (Lucia Francis, born 11-11-11), and Whitney, who was beginning the active planning phase of her wedding (July 29th, 2012). So it was baby showers and dress shopping. Seeing what young and married with a baby on the way looks like. Watching a friend get ready to share her entire life with somebody else.

And then it occurred to me that I didn?t want what they had. Not that they didn?t seem happy?they did?but I just realized that maybe their happy wasn?t my happy. I came home to a new nephew, followed by another, and I remained the Auntie. Child-less, spouse-less. Directionless, yes, true, but very helpful.

Except that now it sometimes drains me to be around families, as though ball-and-chaindom were contagious. And I feel a bit guilty about that, I do. Feel guilty for putting myself first. But maybe that?s just the difference between me and my loved ones with loved ones of their own.

In the guest book at Laura and Mel?s shower, I wrote this:

?I used to think love was something instant, yes or no, like a chemical reaction. But as I grow older, I see that love can be something you make together, like a house that you build around yourselves, a place to take shelter.?

*?????? *?????? *

Now, almost a year later, I know even less. Only that this hurts. And that I still don?t want to be anybody?s mother or anybody?s wife.

Google+ trends: Hurricane Isaac, GSA

Google+ users are sharing news and concerns regarding Hurricane Isaac and buzzing about Google's Student Ambassador Program.?

Hurricane Isaac made landfall Tuesday night, battering the coastline about 90 miles (145 km) north of New Orleans which was badly hit by Hurricane Katrina seven years ago. On Wednesday the storm, which has killed a number of ?people in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, moved closer to Port Fourchon, Louisiana leaving many residents without power.

Also causing a buzz Wednesday is Google's Student Ambassador Program (#GSA2012).

The annual program is for College or University students, requires a minimal commitment for the duration of the academic year and offers young people the chance to learn about Google's technological developments, build leadership skills and participate in Google events. Analysis: Things we've learned at the Republican convention

TAMPA, Florida (Reuters) - Mitt Romney's campaign choreographed the Republican National Convention to sell voters on three ideas: that the party is unified behind Romney; that he is a qualified presidential candidate who's warmer than he seems, and that his running mate, Wisconsin Representative Paul Ryan, is ready to be one step from the presidency.

Ryan took his turn at trying to make the sale on Wednesday night in a convention speech that had Republican delegates roaring with approval. On Thursday, it's Romney's turn.

Whether the convention will give Romney a significant bounce in the polls over Democratic President Barack Obama is not yet clear.

But already this week, the convention has revealed a few other insights about the Republican Party:

DIVISIONS

**Despite shows of unity at the convention, the divisions in the party are deep.

The most obvious sign of discontent at the convention came on Tuesday, when about half of Maine's 24-member delegation walked out of a convention session to protest a move by party leaders to replace them because of alleged procedural violations.

The ousted delegates backed libertarian Texas Congressman Ron Paul; those who replaced them supported Romney.

Another dispute over a Romney-backed plan, aimed at making it more difficult for delegates to switch allegiances to presidential candidates, led some Paul supporters to shout, "Cheater! Cheater!" as Romney supporters chanted, "Please sit down! Please sit down!" and "USA! USA!"

So what's really behind all this?

Look back to the presidential primaries for a clue.

Romney, despite huge advantages in organization and fundraising, had trouble locking up the Republican nomination because many conservatives were - and remain - deeply suspicious of his moderate record as Massachusetts governor, particularly his previous support for a healthcare overhaul and abortion rights.

Paul never led polls in the primary race, but at various times Romney trailed conservatives Rick Perry, Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum as activists who are among the party's most loyal voters looked for an alternative to Romney.

YOUTH MOVEMENT

**These divisions aren't going away anytime soon.

For this election, Romney, 65, has formed an alliance with some of the brightest young conservatives in the Republican Party, including Ryan, 42; Florida Senator Marco Rubio, 41; Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, 44, and South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, 40.

But on the convention floor, many of the delegates are even younger, and have mixed feelings about Romney even if they were bound to vote for his nomination here.

They represent a new generation of Republicans who believe that the party - which has moved to the right in the last quarter-century - hasn't done so quickly enough.

They see new icons in Wisconsin's Walker, who backed a state measure that stripped most public workers of their collective bargaining rights and then survived a recall election backed by the workers' unions.

"A lot of people are upset" that the party isn't more conservative, said Travis Bryan, 31, of Pasadena, Texas. He is a Romney delegate but was not happy with the procedural moves against Paul's supporters at the convention.

Another Texas delegate, John Burroughs, said the effort to suppress Romney's opposition at the convention - which included having convention officials ignore vote totals that delegations announced for Paul or anyone other than Romney - "doesn't bode well for the party. It's an illusion that we have 100 percent unity."

2016

**This convention could be about 2016 as much as it is about 2012.

Several of the convention speakers could become presidential or vice presidential contenders in four years if Romney loses to Obama, and that seemed evident in their speeches.

Santorum, Haley and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie were among those who dwelled on their own story before offering praise for Romney.

Christie, for example, did not mention Romney until the fifth page of his seven-page speech. Santorum, a bitter rival of Romney's during the primaries, mentioned Romney's name three times in his 14-minute speech.

Republicans and Democrats alike have described this election as a benchmark - a once-in-a-generation event that could set the course for American politics for decades.

The current makeup of the Republican Party's leadership suggests that after Romney - whether that's as soon as this year or as late as 2020, if he is elected president and serves the maximum two four-year terms - the flood gates will open to a new generation of Republican leadership.

In Tampa this week, that fact has been difficult to ignore.

"We're focused on this fall - for now," one Republican strategist said. "But yeah, part of the deal here is to position yourself for the future."

ABORTION

**Abortion was never going to be the primary issue of the 2012 campaign. But with Romney as the Republican nominee, don't expect it to come up much.

Romney wants his campaign to be about fixing the struggling economy, not the social issues that are so important to evangelical Christians and other social conservatives who are particularly well-represented among the convention delegates.

Abortion also is an issue on which some conservative Republicans are wary of Romney, because he supported abortion rights when he was Massachusetts governor. Today he says he opposes abortion except in cases of rape or incest, or when the health or life of the pregnant woman is in danger.

That position is more in line with that of many conservative Republicans, but not quite so with the no-exceptions view held by many delegates.

In Tampa, Romney's priorities have won out, because it's his convention.

As a result, even convention speakers who typically make a point of targeting abortion - such as Santorum and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee - touched on the subject only briefly in their remarks here.

That helped Romney - and may have helped to tamp down a controversy over remarks about rape that a Republican congressman from Missouri made a few days before the convention.

COMMUNICATING

**Mitt Romney might not be the greatest communicator. But his wife, Ann, and his running mate, Ryan, showed in Tampa that they can play in the big leagues.

Ann Romney's touching tribute to her husband on Tuesday night was a boost for a candidate who has been called stiff and aloof on the campaign trail.

And in his speech to the convention on Wednesday, Ryan showed that years of explaining complex budgets in Capitol Hill hearings have helped make him a particularly good communicator.

Ryan didn't always stick to the facts; he suggested Obama was responsible for the closing of a General Motors plant in Ryan's hometown that actually closed in December 2008, during President George W. Bush's tenure.

But Ryan showed that he likely will be a formidable surrogate for Romney in the 10-week sprint to the November 6 election.

LG Optimus L9 handson

Though LG didn't have any more to add to the L-Style series to offer the world? Behold the L9. Announced yesterday, the device made an appearance on the IFA show room floor this week, boasting a big and bright 4.7-inch IPS display that makes the its brethren looking downright shrimpy by comparison. In spite of the display size, the phone feels light, with a 8.9-millimeter profile.

It's important to note here that, in spite of being the king of the L-Series, it's still part of a budget lineup, and as such, the phone's body feels a bit plastickey, and the textured rear had a bit of trouble staying snapped in place in the two models (black and white) that we played with. Specwise, we're talking a 1GHz dual-core processor,1GB of RAM inside, 4GB of storage (expandable via a microSD slot and a 2,150mAh battery. The handset's rocking Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0.4, to be precise).

The handset's got a fairly nice bezel, with the front-facing camera on the top and a home button on the bottom, flanked by illuminating back and menu touch buttons. A larger, 5MP camera is located on the rear of the device, above the flash. Vodafone has the handset priced at €50.90 subsidized and €340 unsubsidized. Peep a video of the handset, after the break.

Blue Moon: The Strange Evolution of a Phrase

The next blue moon will occur on the last night of August. Although it will appear no bluer than on any other night, it will nonetheless fit the modern definition of the term by being the second full moon in a calendar month. But this technical meaning of "blue moon" arose fairly recently. The phrase has undergone a strange evolution over the past 500 years.

The notion of a blue moon first appeared in writing in the 16th century, according to folklorist Phillip Hiscock, a professor at Memorial University in Newfoundland who has traced the meaning of the phrase through the centuries. "In the English language, the first use that we have is by Cardinal Wolsey" ? Henry VIII's notorious advisor, Hiscock said. "Cardinal Wolsey writes about his intellectual enemies who 'would have you believe the moon is blue.'"

Aside from the occasional blue-tinged moon that can peak through a volcanic ash cloud, moons almost always hover between white and yellow, and so to call the moon blue was to state an absurdity. "The phrase was a kind of metaphor for absurdity or impossibility," Hiscock told Life's Little Mysteries.

By the 1700s, the phrase had acquired a related meaning: never. "It sort of slipped sideways from impossibility to a temporal notion of impossible in time," Hiscock said.

From there, "blue moon" took a turn for the less stringent, eventually surfacing in 19th-century London as street slang for "a long time." Although it had probably been in use for a while, the slang first appeared in print in an 1821 book about working-class London. "A man is quoting someone on the street in London as saying, 'I haven't seen you this blue moon.' The author of the book gives a little note, and the note tells me this is a phrase he was unfamiliar with," Hiscock said. "The note reads, 'Blue moon ? this is usually intended to imply a long time.'"?[How Colors Got Their Symbolic Meanings]

The next literary reference came in 1869, when, in an autobiographical account of a shipwreck survivor, a man wrote of "that indefinite period known as a 'blue moon.'" Seven years later, the phrase appeared again, this time without explanation or quotation marks. Discussing diet, a character in an 1871 book admits to eating "a fruit pastry once in a blue moon."

The lack of explanation "shows clearly that, at least in Britain where these quotes come from, that phrase seemed to reach popularity in the middle part of that century between the '20s and '70s," Hiscock said.

Although no one knows how or why the phrase "blue moon" became harnessed to rare lunar events, we know where it happened: the state of Maine.

Because each season is three months long, seasons typically have three full moons. However, on occasion, the dates will align in such a way that a season will experience four. Farmers' almanacs published in Maine began calling the third?full moon?in a season with four a "blue moon."

Theories abound as to why the publishers did this. Some say that third moon was traditionally called "blue" in the Czech language, while others think the term comes from the French phrase double moon, "la deux lune," which sounds like blue moon. Other theories hold that almanacs started out printing the various types of moons in different colors, while still others assert that those third moons were bad luck, thus rendered blue. But Hiscock thinks the simplest explanation may be the most compelling: "It seems to me absolutely possible that someone just took the English meaning, 'now and again,' and assigned this astronomical meaning."

The final step in the evolution of the phrase (so far, at least) resulted from a journalist's error. In 1946, the amateur astronomer James Hugh Pruett wrote an article about the term "blue moon" for Sky & Telescope magazine. Whether purposefully or by mistake, he simplified the usage of the term found in the Maine Farmers' Almanac, and defined a blue moon as the second full moon in a calendar month???a coincidence of dates that occurs about every three years. By the time Pruett's error was discovered half a century later, the simple definition had stuck.?[Why Does the Moon Look Bigger on the Horizon?]

Blue moons clearly have a rich history, but Hiscock thinks they have only now entered their heyday. As reflected in the number of businesses and products that have adopted "Blue Moon" for their name, "over the past quarter-century this term has really captured the imagination of North America and beyond," he said. "I think the phrase has a real hook to it for people, and I suspect that's because we are essentially a society of people alienated from nature. We grow up in cities and live lives that have nothing to do with the?physical seasons?or astronomical cycles, and when we hear things that connect us to those things we often become very excited."

He added, "Blue moon links people in a way that a lot of other things cannot. It feels old-fashioned while at the same time right here and now. It reduces that alienation from nature for many people."

2013 Ford C-Max Hybrid Test Drive

On-Sale Date: Fall 2012

Price: $25,995 to $32,280 (base SE to optioned SEL; includes $795 delivery)

Competitors: Toyota Prius V, Mazda5, Subaru Impreza 5-door

Powertrain: 2.0-liter I4 with electric hybrid; 188 hp total; CVT, FWD

EPA Fuel Economy (city/hwy): 47/47 mpg

What's New: Aimed squarely at the market-dominanting Toyota Prius, Ford's C-Max Hybrid brings a 50-hp advantage, more passenger room, and much higher fuel-economy ratings to the fight (the Toyota makes 40 mpg highway and 42 overall compared with the Ford's 47/47). It also undercuts the price of the comparable Prius V by $1300. By adapting its the European-market, Focus-based C-Max five-door hatchback, which was introduced in 2010 but not previously sold in America, Ford achieved a distinct body style?an important factor for hybrid buyers intent on making a statement?without engineering a unique platform.

Tech Tidbit: Ford builds its own lithium-ion battery packs in-house. More compact and potent than the nickel?metal hydride (NiMH) batteries in previous Ford hybrids (and still used by Toyota), the smaller pack leaves room for a 13.5-gallon gas tank (versus 11.9-gallon in the Prius V) and a 570-mile driving range without refueling. And that assumes a real-world 42.2 mpg; hypermilers no doubt will fill Internet discussions with boasts of driving more than 600 miles between stops.

Driving Character: The polished character of the Focus platform and the C-Max's significant power advantage over a Prius combine to form a hybrid you can live with, as we found on two-lane canyon roads east of Malibu, Calif. Because it's heavier and has a higher center of gravity than the Focus (despite the mass of the battery low and to the rear), the C-Max wouldn't be a driving enthusiast's first choice for fun. But the drone of the CVT at least provides appreciable acceleration even uphill. The electronic stability control lends a hand without being intrusive, and the standard 17-inch wheels with 225/50-R tires provide a sense of cornering grip far beyond what you'd expect for this segment.

Favorite Detail: Storage bins under the rear seats provide a place to stow the clutter of odds and ends kids tend to accumulate. This offsets (though only a little) the one comparison between the C-Max and Prius that tilts strongly Toyota's way: cargo capacity with the rear seat folded?52.6 cubic feet in C-Max versus 67.1 in Prius V.

Driver's Grievance: Althought the MyFordTouch infotainment system has improved with each generation, there's still a steep learning curve new owners will have to climb. This is more an issue for multidriver households than for the person who will drive it daily and settle into the settings that work best for him or her.

The Bottom Line: Even with gas prices on the uptick, it's hard to justify the extra buy-in cost of a hybrid. But the 47-mpg rating and sticker price advantage of the C-Max Hybrid make the argument stronger for the Ford than for the Toyota Prius V. Ford's goal here seems not to be convincing a lot of Prius loyalists to switch brands, but rather to claim a bigger share of a growing segment. And with the C-Max, the automaker is walking a clever line, appealing simultaneously to the make-a-statement eco-committed crowd seeking a distinctive-looking car and to the much larger number of customers who just want a good, fuel-efficient vehicle that goes beyond an ordinary Ford Focus.

Father of Wanderlei Silva killed in car crash

Sad news from Curitiba, Brazil. Holando Piniero da Silva, the father of MMA veteran and all-around good guy Wanderlei Silva, died in a head-on car collision. Silva left his camp in Las Vegas to head to Brazil for his father's funeral services.

Silva recently released video from a visit with his family in Brazil. His father talked about how his son is the pride of Brazil, and beamed as he introduced his entire family to the camera.

"I learned a lot from my dad, even with our hectic life. My father worked three jobs. My parents lived for us," Wanderlei said. "The biggest lesson is that we can achieve anything through hard work and honesty."

Rebels down Syrian helicopter over Damascus

AMMAN (Reuters) - Rebels shot down a Syrian army helicopter on Monday while it was bombarding the Damascus neighborhood of Jobar, as heavy fighting broke out in the district between rebels and troops loyal to President Bashar al-Assad, witnesses said.

Syrian state television said in a news flash a helicopter had crashed in Damascus, but offered no further details.

Witnesses said the helicopter was engulfed in flames after it was hit by a projectile during a burst of gunfire and then came down in the nearby district of Qaboun.

Video footage from activists showed the burning helicopter falling to the ground in a trail of smoke, as rebels on the ground could be heard shouting "God is greatest".

The helicopter crashed in a narrow residential street in the northeastern neighborhood of Qaboun, which is on the outskirts of the capital.

"It was flying overhead the eastern part of the city and firing all morning. The rebels had been trying to hit for about an hour, finally they did," said an activist in the area, who calls himself Abu Bakr and spoke to Reuters by Skype.

Heavy clashes broke out in the eastern outskirts of the capital after the downing of the helicopter, activists said.

Army helicopters began firing rockets and machineguns on Sunday at Jobar, Zamalka and Irbin, working class Sunni Muslim neighborhoods on the eastern outskirts of the city.

Rebels in the area have been launching guerrilla attacks against Assad's forces on the outskirts of Damascus and neighboring suburbs, bringing the 17-month-old revolt to the seat of government in recent months.

Activists said the recent round of bombardment was sparked by a rebel attack which killed an army sniper and captured another near a roadblock in Jobar, a rundown neighborhood near a stadium which activists say has been turned into an army base.

"Assad's army retaliated by arbitrarily arresting 100 people in Jobar. Helicopters dropped fliers warning residents to hand over what the regime describes as terrorists or face annihilation," said Abu Omar, a merchant who lives in the area told Reuters by phone.

Green Energy Background Check: The U.S. Military Passes the Test

People all over the world respect the U.S. military, but not just for the justice they bring against criminals and enemies of the state. The U.S. military is also famous for their innovations beyond the realm of war; for example, the care to which they give their troops and their contributions to civil engineering are extraordinary.

Some of the U.S. military?s programs might surprise you. The U.S. military offers some of the most progressive and comprehensive health care coverage for their personnel; they also have strong educational incentive programs that help service members and veterans pay for college and vocational schools once they?ve served their country. The military served as the front line for social change during times of segregation, and more recently for gay rights. In other words, the U.S. military is a pioneering institution.

Now the U.S. military is taking the lead for a new era of American energy usage. A recent article in Forbes magazine explains how the U.S. military is planning to became a pioneer in renewable energy. Forbes reports that the U.S. military will open up a whopping 16 million?16 million!?acres of land for various renewable energy projects. The military will develop the land for solar energy, wind energy, and geothermal energy programs meant to establish sustainable alternative fuel resources. The majority of these programs will be researched in the western U.S.?think open fields filled with wind turbines, solar panels, and the like.

The U.S. military has been vying for more sustainable energy solutions for quite some time. The article explains part of their reasoning as the desire to be a more self-sufficient body, one that doesn?t have to rely on refined oil and gas resources in order to complete missions and get the job done. Renewable energy is just a smart decision for the military, because it opens the door to new innovations that could help them sustain the world-class reputation that they?ve maintained for years.

And the military could not pick a better time to voice their support for renewable energy. The renewable energy market has perpetually taken a backseat to fossil fuel extraction, refinement, and distributions in America; our country?s energy market is dominated by oil companies that want to remain profitable in their business. Unfortunately, it?s hard for oil companies to remain profitable if they?re made to compete with renewable energy sources. Excessive lobbying on behalf of oil and gas combined with intense opposition from many in the GOP has caused renewable energy options to stagnate in the U.S.

Hopefully the U.S. military?s investment in clean, renewable energy will serve as a catalyst for private companies to take more interest in the market. Only time will tell.

Correa could deny Belarus blogger's extradition

Ecuador's President Rafael Correa said he could have the last word on the extradition of a dissident blogger and former soldier from Belarus now before the country's high court.

Alexander Barankov, a former army captain, fled to Ecuador in 2009 after being charged with fraud, allegations he says were trumped up after he blogged about widespread corruption linked to people close to Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, often referred to as "Europe's last dictator."

Ecuador granted him asylum in 2010 after he argued that he faced the death penalty for treason in Belarus, but imprisoned him for 52 days later that year after an extradition request from Minsk that was eventually rejected.

"Ecuador will put the emphasis on not extraditing a citizen whose life is at risk, from facing the death penalty or life in prison," Deputy Foreign Minister Marco Albuja said.

Correa said that if the high court, which is due to issue a ruling in the coming days, decides to grant the extradition request from Belarus, he could overrule that decision "as a last resort."

"We reject any attack on human rights (or) political persecution," Correa told foreign reporters.

Ecuador's much-criticized record on press freedom has come under renewed scrutiny following its decision to grant asylum to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, holed up at its London embassy to avoid extradition to Sweden.

Barankov, 30, is wanted by Interpol for fraud. He has been detained for 70 days pending the court decision.

His lawyer Fernando Lara told AFP that the Lukashenko regime is out to silence Barankov -- a former member of a military anti-corruption investigation team -- after he uncovered illicit activities embarrassing top officials.

The European Union and the United States have accused Belarus of detaining dissidents and committing other human rights abuses, and tightened sanctions in the wake of a disputed election in December 2010 that handed another term to Lukashenko, in power since 1994.

The Barankov case re-emerged following a visit by Lukashenko to Ecuador in June, when he signed several military and other accords with Correa, a leftist leader who has moved to strengthen ties with US foes.

The reopening of the Barankov case comes at a time of tensions with Britain over Assange, who is wanted for questioning in Sweden over sexual assault allegations but fears being sent on to the United States for prosecution.

Correa insisted that Ecuador was "open to dialogue" with Britain and Sweden over Assange, expressing hope for renewed contacts between senior officials.

Washington has viewed WikiLeaks as a threat to its national security following the release of a trove of leaked diplomatic cables and military logs from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Ecuador's support for Assange -- who presents himself as a whistleblower and the victim of a US "witch hunt" -- has drawn attention to Correa's long-running feud with the country's own private media.

Rights groups and press freedom organizations have roundly criticized Correa for targeting opposition media with libel suits, accusing Ecuador of having one of the worst records on press freedom in Latin America.

How Caribbean islands arc was formed

The movement of Earth's viscous mantle against South America has pushed the Caribbean islands east over the last 50 million years, according to a study published Monday in the journal Nature Geoscience.

The University of Southern California, in announcing the study, said the findings upend previous hypotheses of the seismic activity beneath the Caribbean Sea and provide an important new look at the unique tectonic interactions that are causing the Caribbean plate to tear away from South America.

The Caribbean plate is being pushed eastward due to a thick section of the South American plate called a "cratonic keel." This section of crust is three times thicker than its surroundings.

Meanwhile, part of the South American plate is being pushed beneath the Caribbean plate, a process called subduction. Intense heat and pressure gradually force water-containing magma to rise into the Earth's mantle and fuel the many active volcanoes in the region.

All of this pushing and pulling formed the distinctive arc shape of the Caribbean islands and has created a very complex system of faults between the two plates, in northern South America, according to the USC statement. The study mapped several of these strike-slip faults, which are similar to California's San Andreas Fault.

Court: referendum to oust Romania president fails

(AP) ? Romania's constitutional court has ruled that a referendum to whether to impeach the country's president has failed because the minimum voter threshold was not reached.

The Tuesday ruling clears the way for President Traian Basescu to return to his post, the latest twist in a power struggle between a left-wing government and the populist center-right president.

Basescu was suspended by parliament on grounds that he had overstepped his authority by meddling in government business and the country's judicial system.

Augustin Zegrean, chairman of the court said that judges voted by 6 to 3 in deciding that under 50 percent of the electorate had voted in the July 29 referendum.

The court ruled after the government said that electorate had shrunk and thus necessary threshold for the vote had been reached.

Religion And Giving: More Religious States Give More To Charity

BOSTON ? A new study on the generosity of Americans suggests that states with the least religious residents are also the stingiest about giving money to charity.

The study released Monday by the Chronicle of Philanthropy found that residents in states where religious participation is higher than the rest of the nation, particularly in the South, gave the greatest percentage of their discretionary income to charity.

The Northeast, with lower religious participation, was the least generous to charities, with the six New England states filling the last six slots among the 50 states. Churches are among the organizations counted as charities by the study, and some states in the Northeast rank in the top 10 when religious giving is not counted.

The study also found that patterns of charitable giving are colored in political reds and blues.

Of the 10 least generous states, nine voted for Democrat Barack Obama for president in the last election. By contrast, of the 10 most generous states, eight voted for Republican John McCain.

But Peter Panepento, the Chronicle's assistant managing editor, said that political breakdown likely speaks to a state's religious makeup, not its prevailing political views. He noted the lowest-ranked Democrat states were also among the least religious, while the top-ranked Republican states were among the more religious.

"I don't know if I could go out and say it's a complete Republican-Democrat difference as much as it is different religious attitudes and culture in these states," he said.

The study was based on Internal Revenue Service records of people who itemized deductions in 2008, the most recent year statistics were available.

By focusing on the percentage given to charity from discretionary income ? the money left over after necessities are paid for ? the study aimed to remove variables such as the differing costs of living around the country, Panepento said. The data allowed researchers to detail charitable giving down to the ZIP code, he said.

The most generous state was Utah, where residents gave 10.6 percent of their discretionary income to charity. Next were Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee and South Carolina. The least generous was New Hampshire, at 2.5 percent, followed by Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

In Boston, semi-retired carpenter Stephen Cremins said the traditional New England ideal of self-sufficiency might explain the lower giving, particularly during tight times when people have less to spare.

"Charity begins at home. I'm a big believer of that, you know, you have to take care of yourself before you can help others," Cremins said.

The study found that in the Northeast region, including New England, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York, people gave 4.1 percent of their discretionary income to charity. The percentage was 5.2 percent in the Southern states, a region from Texas east to Delaware and Florida, and including most of the so-called Bible Belt.

The Bible mandates a 10 percent annual donation, or tithe, to the church, and the donation is commonly preached as a way to thank God, care for others and show faith in God's provision. But it has a greater emphasis in some faiths.

In Mormon teachings, for instance, Latter Day Saints are required to pay a 10 percent tithe to remain church members in good standing, which helps explain the high giving rate in heavily-Mormon Utah.

"Any LDS member who is faithful does that," said Valerie Mason, 70, of Mesa, Ariz., during an interview in Salt Lake City. "Some struggle with it. Some leave the church because of it. But we believe in the blessing. ... Tithing does bring the blessing of God's promise."

Alan Wolfe, a political science professor at Boston College, said it's wrong to link a state's religious makeup with its generosity. People in less religious states are giving in a different way by being more willing to pay higher taxes so the government can equitably distribute superior benefits, Wolfe said. And the distribution is based purely on need, rather than religious affiliation or other variables, said Wolfe, also head of the college's Boisi Center for Religion and Public Life.

Wolfe said people in less religious states "view the tax money they're paying not as something that's forced upon them, but as a recognition that they belong with everyone else, that they're citizens in the common good. ... I think people here believe that when they pay their taxes, they're being altruistic."

When only secular gifts are counted, New York climbs from No. 18 to No. 2 in giving, and Pennsylvania rises from No. 40 to No. 4.

Among other notable findings of the study:

_ People who earn $200,000 per year give a greater percentage to charity when they live in ZIP codes with fewer people who are as wealthy as they are.

_ People who earn between $50,000 and $75,000 annually give a higher percentage of their income to charity (7.6 percent) than those who make $100,000 or more (4.2 percent).
