Italian who fought for votes for emigres dies (AP)

ROME ? Mirko Tremaglia, a right-wing politician who won a decades-long battle for the right of Italian emigres to vote in Italian elections, died on Friday. He was 85.

Italian news agencies and Sky TG24 TV said Tremaglia died at home in Bergamo, northern Italy, after a long illness.

Tremaglia was a co-founder of the Italian Social Movement, a neo-fascist party built on the ashes of Benito Mussolini's political legacy. But he gradually moved toward what is now Italy's center-right ? first as a leader of the National Alliance and then as a prominent member of Silvio Berlusconi's conservatives ? before breaking with the media mogul in 2010 to defect to a new center-right party.

In a condolence message to Tremaglia's family, President Napolitano, a former Communist, noted that the late lawmaker and himself had "different experiences" and ideological positions but they shared a "sense of national responsibility."

"Particularly strong remains the mark of his commitment to give voice and representation to Italians abroad," Napolitano said.

Tremaglia campaigned tirelessly in Parliament for rights for millions of Italians who had emigrated, or who were born to emigre parents, to cast ballots in Italian elections. His dream became law in 2001, the same year he became minister for Italians abroad, in one of Berlusconi's governments.

In spring 2006, campaigning for Berlusconi in parliamentary elections, Tremaglia energetically worked the crowds in South America, where many of the 3.5 million Italian voters abroad lived. The law also gave Italian emigres the right, for the first time, to have representation in Parliament.

Tremaglia had served as a lawmaker in Parliament's lower chamber, the Chamber of Deputies, since 1972. Chamber President Gianfranco Fini, himself a former neo-fascist leader and former Berlusconi ally, hailed Tremaglia in a tribute Friday, as a "great political and personal friend."

Fini called Tremaglia a "great protagonist of the Italian right ? a cause to which Tremaglia, right to the end, dedicated himself with coherence and loyalty."

Fini's defection, along with several lawmakers like Tremaglia, from Berlusconi's coalition after nasty bickering in 2010, weakened the premier's government. Berlusconi resigned in November amid criticism over his handling of Italy's financial crisis.

In 2004, as a minister in then-premier Berlusconi's government, Tremaglia caused uproar when he complained about what he called the influence of gays in the European Union and used a pejorative term for homosexuals in remarks carried by Italian media.

Tremaglia was commenting on a European Parliament committee's decision not to endorse an Italian nominee to become EU justice minister after the candidate, a former Christian Democrat with close ties to the Vatican, testified that he considered homosexuality a sin.

Soszynski?s retirement on hold until doc says he can?t go on

Soszynski?s retirement on hold until doc says he can?t go onKrzysztof Soszynski appeared to have retired following his fight at UFC 140 (4:00 mark). Now we're finding out there's more to the story.

Just minutes after losing to Igor Pokrajac, Soszynski made his statement made in front of a doctor during a postfight exam. Soszynski recently admitted he didn't even remember discussing the topic that night, but that doesn't mean retirement is out of the question for the 34-year-old veteran of 39 fights.

Aside from dealing with the negative effects of multiple slugfests, Soszynski says his knees are the real problem.

"I've been having knee problems since UFC 110 - the first fight with Stephan Bonnar. Ever since then, my knees just haven't been the same. We basically beat the crap out of each other, and ever since then I haven't been the same," Soszynski told The Province. "I've basically been fighting maybe 50-60-percent capacity. I've been fighting with these obstacles now for close to two years. I've had five knee surgeries in that time - three in the last seven months or so.

Soszynski sounds like he still has some fight left in him, but it'll be up to his doctor to decide if it's worth the risk.

"I possibly have to go under the knife again - I'll go see my doctor next week - so we'll see; depends on what the doctor says. If the doctor says I can get back to fighting, I would love to have at least one more fight, and go out the proper way, not the way I did against Igor. But if the doctor says that's about it, I'm going to respect that," Soszynski said.

Soszynski's been good for the sport. He represented it well by being one of the more mature characters on Season 8 of "The Ultimate Fighter."

Chances are, whether he's fighting or not, he'll contribute as a coach or nutritional expert in the future.

Activist's death leads void in Dominican Republic (AP)

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic ? Sonia Perez was the undisputed champion of people of Haitian descent living in the Dominican Republic, fighting deep discrimination and helping them get birth certificates, housing and education.

Her passing earlier this month of a heart attack at age 48 has left many activists wondering who will carry on her work at a crucial time.

"I don't see who can replace her," said Edwin Paraison, who worked with Pierre and was Haiti's former minister of Haitians living abroad. "Sonia is the kind of woman who is born once a century."

People of Haitian descent, or even just darker skin, have long been condemned to menial jobs, subject to deportation and denied access to school and jobs in the Dominican Republic.

In 30 years of activism, Pierre helped countless people obtain birth certificates over the resistance of government officials. She led marches and organized rallies, fighting for better conditions for people in the sugar cane camps, or bateys, where she grew up.

Pierre's passionate activism drew death threats, but it also earned her the 2006 Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award and the 2010 International Women of Courage Award, which she received while standing between first lady Michelle Obama and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Haiti and the Dominican Republic, which share the island of Hispaniola, have long had a contentious relationship.

Haiti's military invaded the Dominican capital of Santo Domingo in 1822, occupying its neighbor for 22 years. Then in 1937, former Dominican dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo ordered the massacre of 20,000 Haitian migrants in a quest to "cleanse" his country.

Over the years, relations between the two countries slowly improved, with the Dominican Republic becoming a staging ground for aid efforts following the devastating January 2010 earthquake that killed more than 300,000 people in Haiti.

Roughly 100,000 Haitians fled to the Dominican Republic after the earthquake, and the Dominican government temporarily suspended immigration enforcement. But early this year, authorities began arresting and then deporting thousands of Haitians. Dominican officials said they feared the spread of a cholera outbreak in Haiti, but civil right advocates said hundreds of legal migrants were also detained.

An estimated 500,000 to 1 million ethnic Haitians live in the Dominican Republic.

Last month, the Dominican Supreme Court upheld a 2007 law aimed at reducing the use of fake documents, which has led the government to confiscate or annul birth certificates of those born to Haitian immigrants. Many of those immigrants were given work visas in previous decades that the Dominican government now refuses to recognize.

Nonprofit groups estimate that at least 1,600 people have been denied their documents as a result of the law, and activists worry others will follow now that Pierre is gone.

Pierre experienced the marginalization firsthand as one of 12 children raised in a Dominican migrant worker camp.

At just 13, she rallied her Dominican-Haitian neighbors and organized a march to demand rights for sugar cane workers, spending a day in jail while police threatened to deport her to Haiti, where her mother was born.

Pierre later founded the Dominican-Haitian Women's Movement, a nonprofit group that builds homes in poor communities, helps secure basic services such as potable water, organizes workshops for women, and fights for the rights of Dominican-Haitians.

Altagracia Jean Joseph is a 25-year-old law school student who credits Pierre with helping her obtain a copy of her birth certificate so she could enroll in college.

"I consider myself one of Sonia's daughters," she said. "I am sure there are many of us."

But thousands of others are still awaiting birth certificates needed to obtain a job or go to school.

Mireina Fortine, a 45-year-old woman who sells bread for a living, said she has fought to obtain those documents for her nephews without success.

"They tell us that since our last name is foreign, and we're children of Haitians, they cannot give us a birth certificate," she said.

Ninaj Raoul, director of the New York-based Haitian Women for Haitian Refugees, said she believes there is enough frustration boiling among Dominican-Haitians to carry on Pierre's work.

Raoul attended a Dec. 8 protest in which hundreds of Dominican-Haitians and their supporters demanded protection of their rights. The protest took place four days after Pierre died of a heart attack.

"It was pretty clear at that point that the legacy of Sonia Pierre is continuing and that the fight is still on," Raoul said. "I don't think there is any one person who can replace Sonia Pierre. But many people can replace her, and I saw that happening."

Egypt's Mubarak back in court as trial resumes (AP)

CAIRO ? Egypt's ousted leader Hosni Mubarak has been brought back into a Cairo's courtroom for the resumption of his trial after a three months' break.

Mubarak is charged with complicity in the deaths of nearly 840 protesters in the crackdown against a popular uprising, which ended with his ouster on Feb. 11. He could face the death penalty if convicted.

Egyptian TV showed footage of the 83-year-old Mubarak, covered by a green blanket and lying on a hospital gurney. He was brought from a helicopter and taken to an ambulance for a short ride to the court house Wednesday .

Mubarak has been under arrest in a hospital since April.

The trial's last hearing was in September when the head of the military council, which took power after Mubarak's ouster, testified in a closed-door session.

Three Things I Learned from Having Breast Cancer

you see all my light

Image via Wikipedia

Once, someone wrote on Twitter that she hates the openings to my posts and likes the rest.

She had a point.

Usually, I just use the beginning as a way to get to the point.

The fun thing about having breast cancer ? read about where my boobs went wrong here ? is that it?s a Learning Experience. You learn about Other People. And How to Deal with Challenges. And along the way you Change and Transform.

It?s like a Gift from God that happens in your Cancerous Breasts.

Here?s what I?ve learned so far.

1. You enter another reality.

Today, I went to go see a person I refer to as my ?Cancer Shrink.? That means he works with the hospital to help women who are diagnosed with breast cancer. I can?t imagine how he does his job. It would make me feel sad, but he is a happy man. I have to conclude it makes him happy.

Early on in the session, he mentioned he was a cancer survivor. Later, I asked him what kind of cancer he had.

He tilted his head to one side and showed me the side of his neck.

Eau de DNA: Do Genes Determine Our Perfume Preference? (LiveScience.com)

A perfume that one person loves may be repulsive to another. The difference is in our genes, a new study suggests.

Scientists asked people to rate their preference for the scents commonly found in perfumes, and then tested for variations in the participants' genes. As it turns out, which version of a gene someone had was correlated with which smells they liked best.

"It's really hard for many people to find that perfect perfume for themselves," said August Hammerli, first author of the paper and a researcher at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Z?rich. ?Many people judge in terms of packaging and marketing and not what smells they like. Our idea was to bring biology into this question and ask: Can we determine what perfume scents a person would like based on their genotype??

The new study was published online Dec. 6 in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science.?

What Smells Good?

Previous research has found that a set of genes called MHC genes (short for major histocompatibility complex) is related to whether someone is sexually attracted to someone else's scent. People are most likely to be attracted to the scent of someone who has different MHC genes than they do. Evolutionary biologists think that for primates in the wild, this helps ensure that animals closely related to each other don't mate.

H?mmerli and his colleagues hypothesized that our MHC genes may also dictate our preferences for other smells. One previous study suggested that there was a correlation, but didn?t flesh the idea out. ?H?mmerli's team recruited 116 study participants ? both male and female ? and asked them to smell 10 different scents, including cedar, rose, cinnamon and moss. They repeated the tests with different concentrations of the scents and in different settings.

Some smells were clear winners and losers ? the highest rated was tolu, a scent that comes from a South American balsam tree and resembles vanilla. The lowest rated was vetiver, which originates from a grass in India and is said to have a "woody" or "earthy" scent. But for each scent, the strength of the participants' preferences varied depending on each person's particular set of MHC genes .

"It would still be difficult to create a perfect perfume for someone based on this limited information," H?mmerli said. "But the more scents and people you study, the more patterns start to emerge."

H?mmerli said the scents that people prefer may be those that best advertise their own natural body odors to potential mates, enhancing the connection between MHC and attraction to others. But that theory has yet to be tested.

Buying Perfumes for Others

"These findings fit very well into what has been found,? said Claus Wedekind, of the University of Laussane in Switzerland. Wedekind was one of the first scientists to discover the link between MHC genes and mate preferences, with the notorious "sweaty T-shirt study" in which women rated their preference for the smells of T-shirts worn by different men. ?

"We first tested this idea in the early 1990s in humans," Wedekind said. "We found that body odor preferences are indeed linked to immune genes. One could then speculate that other odor preferences are also influenced by these genes."

Because MHC genes are most often linked to people's attraction to others, biologist Leslie Knapp at the University of Cambridge said the new study could be expanded to test whether the perfume preferences hold true when the perfumes are worn by others, as opposed to sprayed on one's own body.

"In this study they're focusing on self as opposed to focusing on others," Knapp said. "When they talk about wanting to choose a fragrance, my idea is why aren't you thinking about what fragrances you'd be buying for your partner? If someone likes a fragrance, they should want their partner to smell like that."

But this line of research still has the potential to reveal how MHC genes control scent preferences, and why.? "A lot of people are interested in this because they still don?t understand it, and there's a lot more for us to learn," Knapp said. ?What is it that makes people prefer different smells, and what is it that makes different people smell different?"

Pass it on: ?Your genes may determine what perfume scents you prefer?it?s thought to be linked to the smells you find attractive in people of the opposite sex.?

Analysts Revved Up for Automotive Industry in 2012 (NYSE:WFC ...

Scottrade: $7 Online Trades. Real-Time Stock Quotes

Eleven independent analysts forecast an average sales figure of 13.6 million light vehicles in 2012. The prediction would be an increase of 6-7% over this year depending on how 2011 wraps up. The spike in auto sales is attributed to rising employment, increasing credit availability, new products and aging vehicles currently driven by Americans. If, and that?s a big IF, consumers meet these expectations, that will be great news for shareholders of General Motors (NYSE:GM), Ford (NYSE:F), Toyota Motors (NYSE:TM), and Honda Motor Company (NYSE:HMC).

Don?t Miss: Iran Threatens to Block Oil Flow Through Vital Strait of Hormuz in Response to U.S. Sanctions.

Though the most conservative estimate of 13 million by Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC) is a full million less than the loftiest of 14 million by Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS), the spread is still narrower than the 1.5 million difference in 2011 predictions. Analysts predict just as much economic bad news in 2012, but believe consumers are less skittish than they were three years ago when the recession began.

Automotive News quoted Alec Gutierrez, Senior Market Analyst for Kelley Blue Book, who said, ?The Dow fell 1,500 points ? and car sales stayed smooth and consistent. The American consumer has seen so much gone wrong. If they have to buy a car, they will.?

While a European recession is possible in 2012, it could possibly be outweighed by an American economic surge. Jeff Schuster, a forecaster for the Americas for LMC Automotive, says that the more telling factors will be pent-up demand, a growing inventory, and credit availability.? The average age of vehicles on the road is currently 10.7 years, up from 8 or 9 over the past decade according to Tom Kontos, Executive Vice President of Customer Strategies and Analytics for auction house ADESA. ?Americans have gone without for a very long time.? ?I need a car? is the biggest reason for optimism,? Kontos said per Automotive News.

South Korea peace seekers meet new leader of the North

A delegation led by two South Korean widows, both linked to the failed Sunshine policy of North-South reconciliation, met with North Korea's Kim Jong-un in Pyongyang Monday.

The widow of a former South Korean president invoked memories of the brightest moment in North-South relations Monday as she visited the bier in Pyongyang of the late North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il.

Mr. Kim's successor, Kim Jong-un,?stood quietly by as 90-year-old Lee Hee-ho wrote that she hoped ?the spirit of the June 15 South-North Joint Declaration? ? signed by her late husband Kim Dae-jung and Kim Jong-il in June 2000 ? ?would be carried forward to achieved national reunification as soon as possible.?

Ms. Lee's visit was a poignant reminder of the hopes from that earlier summit and South Korea's failed Sunshine policy of reconciliation with the North. That effort stalled as North Korea forged ahead with nuclear and missile programs.?South Korea's current president,?Lee Myung-bak, ended the Sunshine policy but allowed Lee to undertake today's trip.

The decision to permit her and another widow deeply involved in North Korea to lead condolence delegations to Pyongyang represents more of a special exception rather than a significant olive branch.?The government denied permission for all other South Koreans,?notably politicians critical of its hard-line policy.

But Lee and Hyun Jeong-un, widow of Hyundai chairman Chung Mong-hun?whose company opened up special zones for business and tourism in North Korea, had?personal and historical ties that could not be ignored.?Lee's husband, who died in 2009, won the Nobel Peace Prize six months after the North-South summit. Mr. Chung committed suicide in 2003 after his indictment for passing enormous bribes to persuade Kim Jong-il to agree to the summit.

For Lee, the journey by road to Pyongyang marked her first visit to North Korea since she flew there with her husband for the summit. Her yearning for a return to her husband?s Sunshine policy is shared by many of her husband?s allies and followers, but she avoided bitterness before entering North Korea at the truce village of Panmunjom 40 miles north of here.

In a statement read by an aide, Lee said simply, "I hope that our trip to North Korea will help improve relations between South and North Korea.?

Comments Requested On On-Farm Energy Creation

News

CANADA - The Ministry of Agriculture is inviting British Columbians to contribute to the development of two bylaw standards related to the creation of on-farm energy.

One bylaw standard will cover anaerobic digestion on farms in the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) and the other will cover combined heat and power co-generation in greenhouses in the ALR. Both systems present farmers possibilities to improve operating efficiency.

Anaerobic digestion systems use a combination of manure and organic materials to produce renewable energy in the form of methane gas. This methane gas can be upgraded to natural-gas quality or converted to electricity. A discussion paper and survey propose:

  • Minimum farm size on using a system.
  • Restrictions on the materials and their origins that can be used in the system.
  • Planning, administrative and record-keeping requirements.
  • Criteria for anaerobic digestion activities that would not require local-government rezoning.

Greenhouse growers use natural gas-based combined heat and power co-generation systems to produce electricity, heat and carbon dioxide, which are used to fertilize greenhouse crops. A discussion paper and survey propose:

  • Requirements that cogeneration production be commensurate with the heat demand on the farm and/or total greenhouse size.
  • Minimum operating efficiency.
  • Sites and management that minimize noise impacts.
  • Criteria for cogeneration activities that would not require local-government rezoning.

Bylaw standards are not legally binding. Rather, they provide interested local governments with criteria on a topic, should they be interested in developing a bylaw. The call for public comments follows the distribution of the ministry?s discussion papers to local governments and stakeholders.

Respondents are advised to familiarise themselves with the respective discussion paper prior to participating in the survey.

The surveys will be open until March 15, 2012. All comments will be included in the ministry?s consideration in developing the bylaw standards.

This discussion paper and survey are available here.

Aegis Secure Key

When you need to transport highly sensitive data, sending it in email or over the Internet may not be such a great idea. Transporting a physical drive holding the encrypted data significantly reduces points of possible exposure. Even so, a determined hacker could attack the decryption software, possibly compromising the data. The fully self-contained Aegis Secure Key ($65 direct) uses an onboard PIN pad rather than relying on software. That $65 price gets you a 4GB unit; 8GB and 16GB devices can be had for $95 and $125 respectively.

Since no software is needed, you can use the drive with any USB-capable device, regardless of the operating system. Windows, Mac OS, Linux?even a proprietary device with a proprietary operating system would be fine as long as it supports USB.

Button-based Configuration
In many ways Aegis Secure Key resembles LOK-IT Secure Flash Drive ($76.25 direct, 4 stars). That's only natural, as both license some basic technology from the same source. Both work with any USB-capable operating system, both use an onboard PIN pad for access, both destroy the stored data after ten bad guesses, and so on. However, there are some significant differences.

The Aegis Secure Key comes with a quick start card that explains how to unlock the key and set your own PIN code; you'll find the full manual stored on the key itself. Red, green, and blue LED lights (powered by a rechargeable battery) turn steadily on or blink in various combinations that reflect the key's status. For example, after you enter the unlock code the green light blinks until you plug the key into a USB port, which you must do within 30 seconds of entering the code.

Where LOK-IT comes without a PIN, Aegis has a default PIN installed at the factory. Before doing anything else with the device, use the quick start card's instructions to unlock the device with that default PIN. Copy the manual PDF from the secure key to local storage on your computer and give it a quick read.

Both devices require a PIN from 7 to 15 digits long without continuous runs of numbers or strings of repeated digits. The buttons on Aegis include letters, like buttons on a phone, allowing users to create alphabetic mnemonics for the PIN.

The unlock process is the same for Aegis and LOK-IT; press the Key button, enter the PIN, press the Key button again. The button sequence for setting a new PIN is also the same.

A rather complex series of button combinations completely resets the drive, wiping out all data and generating a new encryption key. After a reset, you'll have to create a new PIN and format the drive. LOK-IT has no similar feature, though you can force a wipe by entering the wrong PIN ten times. Note that LOK-IT has only six encryption keys; once they've been used up the device is kaput. Aegis can generate any number of encryption keys.

Another advanced Aegis feature is the option to create an Admin PIN. In a business setting the Admin PIN lets management reset a user's lost PIN without losing the data, or recover data after an employee leaves.

There are physical differences too. Aegis comes with a protective sleeve; LOK-IT does not. Aegis is smaller, so it doesn't block a USB port above or below the way LOK-IT can. The membrane keys of the LOK-IT can get marked up by fingernails, leaving clues as to which numbers get pressed during PIN entry; the Aegis's keys are hard and offer click feedback. Aegis is just a bit better all around, yet it costs less.

Ron Paul Walks Off CNN Interview, Irritated By New Questions About Old Newsletters

GOP Presidential candidate Ron Paul furrowed his eyebrows, growing agitated before taking off his mic and walking away from CNN interview about his old newsletters.

As Paul has gained traction in recent polls, the media has turned up the heat, alleging that he made money and won fame with a sometimes racist series of publications.

Paul claims he didn't read most of the newsletters and their controversial content, written during the 1980s and 1990s, despite them being published under his name.

He has taken responsibility for being a bad publisher, but disavowed the views, as he explained to CNN's Gloria Borger, who grilled him on the topic yesterday ...

"Why don't you go back and look at what I said yesterday on CNN and what I’ve said for 20 something years. 22 years ago?" the 76-year-old Paul said at the outset.

"I didn't write them, I disavow them, that's it."

Borger pressed on for a few seconds before urging Paul to react to what people are saying about the allegations. "These things are pretty incendiary," Borger said.

"Because of people like you," Paul snapped back.

Later, when talking with Borger about the interview incident on air, Situation Room host Wolf Blizter suggested that Paul "got tired of talking about" the allegations.

He could have probably handled it a lot better, although he has answered the same questions the same way a ton of times now, including last week on Hannity.

What do you think? Is Paul's explanation satisfactory? Will the fiery newsletters from long ago continue to dog him, or will they become background noise?

Recurrent Energy Secures $250M Financing For 200MW of Solar PV Projects

Recurrent Energy has announced that it has secured a four-year construction revolver credit facility of $250 million from Mizuho Corporate Bank. The facility will support the construction of 20 solar photovoltaic (PV) projects throughout the province of Ontario, Canada. The credit facility is one of the largest non-recourse solar financings for a solar PV portfolio in North America.

"This financing signals a major step for Recurrent Energy and Ontario: the build-out of some 200 MW of solar power plants," said Arno Harris, CEO of Recurrent Energy.

"This transaction provides yet more evidence that solar is a mainstream energy source attracting significant investment from established financial partners. This is what solar looks like at scale."

With this financing, Recurrent Energy will begin construction on the first phase of solar developments in Ontario. When completed, the 20 solar developments will provide more than 200 MW of power to residents in the province.

The projects are all under the Ontario Power Authority's feed-in tariff program (FIT), which provides long-term contracts for energy generated from renewable sources such as solar.

Mizuho Corporate Bank was the lead arranger and administration agent for this financing agreement.

Shinya Wako, Managing Executive Officer and Head of the Americas for Mizuho Corporate Bank, commented, "This agreement is a significant milestone for our involvement in the North American solar industry, and we are pleased to be partnering with Recurrent Energy, a solar developer with proven experience and expertise."

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? Urban Meyer's first Ohio State team won't be bowl-bound.

The NCAA hit Ohio State with a one-year bowl ban and other penalties on Tuesday for a scandal that involved eight players taking a total of $14,000 in cash and tattoos in exchange for jerseys, rings and other Buckeyes memorabilia. Tipped to the violations, then-coach Jim Tressel failed to speak up.

The university had previously offered to vacate the 2010 season, return bowl money, go on two years of NCAA probation and use five fewer football scholarships over the next three years.

But the NCAA countered with a bowl ban in Meyer's first year as head coach in 2012, further reduced the number of scholarships and tacked on a year of probation.

"It is still my goal to hire excellent coaches, recruit great student-athletes who want to be a part of this program and to win on and off the field," Meyer said in a statement.

The stiffer penalties ? including a finding of a "failure to monitor" of Ohio State's athletic programs ? came because of additional problems which followed the tattoo-related violations revealed a year ago, almost to the day.

It was a sobering blow to Ohio State and athletic director Gene Smith, who through a lengthy NCAA investigation had maintained there was no way the Buckeyes would be banned from a bowl game.

"We are surprised and disappointed with the NCAA's decision," Smith said in a statement. "However, we have decided not to appeal the decision because we need to move forward as an institution. We recognize that this is a challenging time in intercollegiate athletics. Institutions of higher education must move to higher ground, and Ohio State embraces its leadership responsibilities and affirms its long-standing commitment to excellence in education and integrity in all it does."

As shocking as the Ohio State case was when it broke, it has since been overshadowed by three other scandals in college sports. Former Penn State football assistant coach Jerry Sandusky was charged with more than 50 criminal counts related to child sex abuse, an ex-Syracuse basketball assistant coach was fired after being accused of fondling boys and young men, and a University of Miami booster caught masterminding a Ponzi scheme claimed he provided money, cars and even prostitutes to Hurricanes athletes.

Ohio State might have done better in its meetings with the NCAA but, after the initial tattoo scandal, the school and the NCAA discovered two additional problems. Three players were suspended just before the start of the season for accepting $200 from booster Bobby DiGeronimo, and midway through the Buckeyes' 6-6 season it was revealed that several players had been paid too much for too little work on summer jobs ? supplied by the same booster. He has been disassociated from the program.

Tressel, forced out in the wake of the scandal, was hit with a five-year "show-cause" order which all but prevents him from being a college coach during that time.

"Of great concern to the committee was the fact that the former head coach became aware of these violations and decided not to report the violations," the NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions wrote in its report.

Greg Sankey, associate commissioner of the Southeastern Conference and a committee member, said in a teleconference that Tressel's failure to act was, "considered very serious and, frankly, very disappointing."

Tressel is now on the staff of the Indianapolis Colts as a video-review coordinator.

Under a show-cause order, any school that hired Tressel would have to present its case for why it needed to employ him, and would risk severe penalties if he were to commit any further infractions after that.

The Buckeyes are preparing to play Meyer's former team, Florida, in the Gator Bowl on Jan. 2. Meyer, a two-time national title winner with the Gators was hired to much acclaim on Nov. 28 and has built a solid recruiting class despite the ongoing NCAA problems. But a bowl ban could affect those verbal commitments.

At a news conference Monday, the new coach said he was given indications ? but no promises ? that the penalties against Ohio State would not be severe. After the NCAA's ruling came down, he did not say whether he felt the school was treated fairly.

"The NCAA penalties will serve as a reminder that the college experience does not include the behavior that led to these penalties," he said.

Asked whether the committee on infractions was trying to send a message with more severe penalties, Greg Sankey said, "I would not suggest that this is necessarily a new day, but these penalties are significant and that's part of the committee's role in both deliberating and finding violations and then assessing penalties."

The NCAA also issued a public reprimand and censure, put the Buckeyes on probation through Dec. 19, 2014, and reduced football scholarships from 85 to 82 through the 2014-15 academic year.

Edward Rife, the owner of Fine Line Ink where Ohio State players began to congregate in 2009 and 2010, has been sentenced to three years in prison following his conviction earlier this year on drug trafficking and money laundering charges.

Is the Gingrich surge over? (The Week)

New York ? After what seemed like a decisive rise to the top of the GOP heap, Newt Gingrich is losing steam. Was he just the latest flavor of the month after all?

"It seems like just yesterday that Newt Gingrich rocketed into the position of 2012 Republican presidential front-runner, a.k.a. the least secure job in the world," says Molly Ball in The Atlantic. But like all the GOP pack-leaders not named Mitt Romney before him, Gingrich's lead seems to be crumbling. Gallup's daily tracking poll still has Gingrich ahead nationally, but what was a 15-point lead over Romney a week ago has dropped to 5 points. And a new Rasmussen poll has Newt losing to Romney in Iowa, 20 percent to 23 percent. Even the political gamblers at InTrade are giving up on him. As Ball asks, is the air "already coming out of the Gingrich balloon"?

Yes, Newtmentum is history: It's pretty clear from the new polls that Gingrich is sinking, and fast, says Allahpundit in Hot Air. And it's pretty clear why: "Voters simply didn't know the bad stuff about Newt yet," and now "they're getting a crash course," thanks to a flurry of attack ads and "withering criticism from prominent conservatives." Worse for Gingrich, he lacks the cash and organizational power to fight back, so "he might not be able to reverse the trend."
"Confirmed: Gingrich's numbers starting to slip"

The news isn't all bad for Newt: It sure looks like "Gingrich's momentum has stopped ? and has probably reversed itself," says Nate Silver in The New York Times. But "there are still a few silver linings for his campaign." This could be a temporary dip, like the one then-candidate Barack Obama faced at the same point in 2007 before going on to easily win Iowa. And the numbers for Romney, Gingrich's only real rival, are pretty weak, too. Newt might even benefit from the "diminished expectations" this poll slump brings.
"Gingrich momentum slows, polls suggest"

Gingrich has already proved his point: All of this poll-gazing assumes Gingrich even wants the nomination, says Noam Scheiber in The New Republic. But he's barely campaigning in Iowa, and he "obviously doesn't want to do the things you generally have to do... to become president." I don't think Newt wants the job, or the hard work. My bet is he just wanted to prove to detractors "that he could be president if he really wanted to," and he's campaigning like a man who's "already done what he set out to do."
"Does Newt really want to be president?"

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) ? Thousands of children suffered sexual abuse in Dutch Catholic institutions over the past 65 years, and church officials knew about the abuse but failed to adequately address it or help the victims, a long-awaited report said Friday. The release of the report was followed by an apology to victims by the archbishop of Utrecht, who said the revelation "fills us with shame and sorrow."

The Dutch investigation uncovered some of the most widespread abuse yet from a slew of inquiries around the world into sex abuse in the Catholic church. It echoes reports in Ireland that detailed how tens of thousands of children suffered wide-ranging abuses in workhouse-style residential schools.

The Dutch report said Catholic officials failed to tackle the widespread abuse, which ranged from "unwanted sexual advances" to rape, in an attempt to prevent scandals. Abusers included priests, brothers, pastors and lay people who worked in religious orders and congregations, it said. The investigation followed allegations of repeated incidents of abuse at one cloister that quickly spread to claims from Catholic institutions across the country.

The suspected number of abuse victims who spent some of their youth in church institutions likely lies somewhere between 10,000 and 20,000, according to a summary of the report investigating allegations of abuse dating back to 1945.

The commission behind the report received some 1,800 complaints of abuse at Catholic schools, seminaries and orphanages and said that the institutions suffered from "a failure of oversight." It then conducted the broader survey of the general population for a more comprehensive analysis of the scale and nature of sexual abuse of minors ? both in the church and elsewhere.

Based on a survey among more than 34,000 people, the commission estimated that one in 10 Dutch children suffered some form of abuse broadly in society. The number doubled to 20 percent of children who spent part of their youth in an institution like an orphanage or boarding school ? whether Catholic or not.

The commission was set up last year under the leadership of former government minister Wim Deetman, who said there could be no doubt church leaders knew of the problem.

"The idea that people did not know there was a risk ... is untenable," he said.

Deetman said abuse continued in part because the Catholic church in the Netherlands was splintered, so bishops and religious orders sometimes worked autonomously to deal with abuse and "did not hang out their dirty laundry."

However, he said the commission concluded that "it is wrong to talk of a culture of silence" by the church as a whole.

Bert Smeets, an abuse victim who attended the presentation of the report, said it did not go far enough in investigating and outlining in precise detail exactly what happened.

"What was happening was sexual abuse, violence, spiritual terror, and that should have been investigated," Smeets told The Associated Press. "It remains vague. All sorts of things happened, but nobody knows exactly what or by whom. This way they avoid responsibility."

Archbishop Wim Eijk said victims would be compensated by a commission the Dutch church set up last month and which has a scale starting at euro5,000 ($6,500) and rising to a maximum of euro100,000 ($130,000) depending on the nature of the abuse.

He said he felt personally ashamed of the abuse. "It is terrible," he said.

The Dutch Conference of Religious Orders also apologized, calling the abuse "a dark chapter in the history of religious life."

"We want to apologize for these mistakes and we want to never make them again," the conference said in an open letter to all victims.

The commission said about 800 priests, brothers, pastors or lay people working for the church were named in the complaints. About 105 of them were still alive, although it was not known if they remained in church positions, the report said. It did not release their names and identified them as "perpetrators" rather than "offenders," meaning they had not been proven to have committed a crime.

Prosecutors said in a statement that Deetman's inquiry had referred 11 cases ? without naming the alleged perpetrators ? to them.

Prosecutors opened only one investigation based on those reports, saying the other 10 did not contain enough detailed information and adding that they also appeared to have happened too long ago to prosecute. Had the case files contained enough information to trigger an investigation, prosecutors could have asked for the identities of the suspected abusers.

Deetman said the inquiry could not establish a "scientific link" between priests' celibacy and abuse, but he added, "we don't consider it impossible ... maybe if there was voluntary celibacy a number of problems would not have happened."

According to the Dutch Central Bureau for Statistics, 29 percent of the Dutch population of 16 million identified themselves as Catholics in 2008, making it the largest religion in the country.
