Vatican and Oxford libraries scan ancient works, let scholars stay in their armchairs

Two of the world's most hallowed libraries are about to get even quieter, having been given $3 million to go with the flow and put some of their oldest collections online. The Vatican Library and Oxford University's Bodleian Library will together offer up 1.5 million pages of hoary text, including Gutenberg's Latin Bible from the 15th Century, a 1,200-year-old Hebrew codex called the "Sifra," and enough Greek philosophy to make even Homer seem succinct. At the end of a five-year flatbed scanner marathon, these digital copies will be accessible to speakers of dead languages everywhere, and hopefully for less than sacrilegious prices.

Three Reasons Individuals Wind Up Using Article Advertising And ...

Article marketing has been around for a very long time and there are actually a few different reasons that individuals look at this one of the greatest ways to advertise. Many folks possess the false belief that article marketing and advertising is only good in relation to obtaining traffic to your internet site directly from the articles. The truth of the matter is there are three main benefits you are going to find in relation to article marketing and advertising. Here we will be speaking about the many benefits of article advertising and show you why this could wind up benefiting you while you are trying to make cash online.

As we already pointed out, you?re going to discover that when you write an article and post it to article publication sites you will have the ability to leave a link in the article pointing back to your website which will get you direct traffic. Needless to say in order to get this direct traffic you need to make certain that you are writing good quality articles and that you are posting these content articles in the most popular article directory sites on the web. While there are a huge selection of article directory sites everywhere online you are going to find that there are only a few that actually will be able to send you this direct traffic.

There is an another great benefit of using article advertising and that?s the point that you are going to have the ability to brand yourself as an expert in your field and also let individuals learn about your product. So long as the articles you are writing are informative and provide folks with useful information you?re going to find that many folks will start turning to you when they have questions. I know you already realize that if someone who is considered an authority recommends a product individuals will be more likely to purchase the product than from somebody they haven?t heard of. This is also a great way for you to let folks find out about new products you release, and the more articles you have created about your products the more brand awareness you will receive.

Submitting articles to article directory sites is also a wonderful way to build a large amount of links even if you?re not getting direct traffic from those article directory sites. Each time you publish an article in any article directory site whether it?s popular or not, you will be building a back link to your web site which helps you get higher search engine rankings. You should also take into account that if you take one article and submit it to 1000 directories and they all publish your article this will be 1000 links pointing to your site.

These are the main reasons individuals choose article marketing as the best way to advertise any product, and I know you are able to see how powerful this advertising strategy actually is for creating traffic to your site.

Obama, Romney trade blows as fight for White House narrows

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney fired sharp attacks at each other on Wednesday as they opened a seven-month battle for the White House that got ugly fast.

Both campaigns moved quickly to frame the choice for voters one day after Romney's chief rival, conservative Rick Santorum, dropped out, giving the former Massachusetts governor a clear path to the Republican nomination to challenge Obama in November's election.

On cue, the Obama campaign released a video of Romney's more awkward moments on the campaign trail and again portrayed him as a wealthy, out-of-touch conservative.

Romney attacked Obama's economic leadership as a failure and described him as a throwback to the era of "big-government" Democrats.

The exchanges were a sign of things to come in a general election fight for the White House between two candidates who have shown they are willing to throw a punch.

Obama's campaign video entitled "Memories to Last a Lifetime" reminded voters of potentially embarrassing statements from Romney in the Republican primary campaign. Among them were his declaration that "corporations are people" and his claim to have been a "severely conservative" governor of Massachusetts.

"Mitt Romney: A severely conservative nominee. Remember that," the video says, pre-empting any move by Romney to tack to the center to win independents in the coming months.

For the second consecutive day, Obama promoted the Buffett Rule, a plan to ensure that millionaires like former executive Romney pay at least 30 percent income tax.

At an event in the White House, Obama said the Republican Party had moved to the right and recalled the belief of former President Ronald Reagan, a Republican and conservative icon, that the wealthy should pay their fair share.

"What Ronald Reagan was calling for then is the same thing we're calling for now - a return to basic fairness," Obama said at the event, which featured a number of millionaires and their secretaries.

Congress will take up the Buffett Rule, named for billionaire investor and Obama supporter Warren Buffett, next week but the timing of Obama's comments also is part of his portrayal of Romney as an out-of-touch elitist.

The Obama campaign placed a digital calculator on its website allowing Americans to see how their tax rate compares to the 13.9 percent rate Romney paid in 2010. He paid that low rate because most of his income was from investments rather than wages, which are taxed at a higher rate.

Romney, a former head of a private equity firm who has touted his business background, said Obama was trying to change the subject from his poor handling of the economy.

'A THROWBACK'

"He's really trying to divert from the failure of his record, which is that he has not created jobs," Romney said in an interview with Fox News. "I think this president represents a throwback to the old-style Democrats of the past: big government, welfare state Democrats."

Romney's campaign plans to focus on painting Obama as an incompetent steward of a stuttering economy.

But with the primary competition behind him, Romney still must rally distrustful conservatives and unite a party with fresh memories of a divisive nominating battle that featured millions of dollars in negative attack ads from Romney and his campaign allies.

Romney also must repair his image with women voters, which polls show suffered during the primary campaign. Democrats were quick to criticize on Wednesday when three Romney advisers were unable to say during a conference call with reporters whether Romney backed a law signed by Obama on equal pay for women.

The Romney campaign later said he backed the law and released a flood of statements attacking Obama's record on creating jobs for women.

"Of course Mitt Romney supports pay equity for women. The real question is whether President Obama supports jobs for women," said Romney campaign spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg.

Romney said he was confident the party would unite as the campaign moved forward and said he was not concerned about the Obama campaign's charges that he is out of touch with everyday Americans.

"We are getting started with a general election campaign and people will get to know me better and they'll get to know him better as well and they'll look at his record," Romney told Fox. "But the person I am out of touch with is Barack Obama; I am in touch with the American people."

Two other Republican candidates remain in the race for the nomination but they badly lag Romney and have virtually no chance of winning.

One of them, former House of Representatives Speaker Newt Gingrich, had to explain how a $500 check from his campaign to pay for registration in the Republican primary in Utah just bounced.

Gingrich's campaign is suffering from money problems but he said the bounced check was drawn back in December but the account had since been closed and the money moved elsewhere.

"It wasn't that we didn't have enough money in the bank but that that particular account had been closed," he said.

Iran Nuclear Talks: Can Islam Guide the Way to Peace?

There's all sorts of ways the nuclear talks with Iran might end badly. But it's also pretty clear, even before diplomats gather in Istanbul on Friday, how the talks would manage to end happily: On the foundation of Iran's repeated insistence that atomic weapons are prohibited by Islam.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who wields nearly absolute power in Iran, has been saying for years that nuclear arms are "sinful" and thus off-limits for the Islamic Republic. He said it again as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu prepared to call on President Obama in Washington last month: "There is no doubt the decision-makers in the countries opposing us know well that Iran is not after nuclear weapons because the Islamic Republic, logically, religiously and theoretically, considers the possession of such weapons is senseless, destructive and dangerous," the Supreme Leader declared, according to state media.

(MORE: Five Tips for President Obama on Nuclear Negotiations with Iran)

The mullah was right on one point: At least one decision-maker in a country opposing them -- President Obama -- knows very well that Iran publicly opposes nukes on religious grounds, and sees in that stance an elegant way out of a crisis increasingly defined in military terms. Obama brought the point up himself to the Atlantic's Jeff Goldberg during their lengthy interview on the eve of Netanyahu's visit, an expansive discussion that made news for its tough talk -- "I don't bluff" -- but also laid out the President's strategy for a negotiating a peaceful endgame. The pivot point, he said, would be the Iranians' descriptions of nuclear weapons as "un-Islamic" and "sinful."

"The point is that for them to prove to the international community that their intentions are peaceful and that they are, in fact, not pursuing weapons is not inconsistent with what they've said," Obama explained. "So it doesn't require them to knuckle under to us. What it does require is for them to actually show to the world that there is consistency between their actions and their statements. And that's something they should be able to do without losing face."

Face matters in any negotiation, but especially one with Iran, which sees itself not only as the vanguard of the Muslim world, but also of what used to be called the non-aligned nations, scrappy underdogs that chafe at a world order top-heavy with northern, Christian states -- basically, the ones who took charge after World War II and held on. Add to that the longstanding national pride in Iran's own lustrous history of innovation and high culture (much of it assembled under the rubric of "Persia," its other name) and you begin to see the importance of Tehran's walking away from the table with its head held high.

(MORE: Iran Talks: Amid Ticking Clocks and Closing Windows, What Would Success Look Like?)

But a cleric also wants to look consistent, especially on matters ecclesiastical. Khamenei may not qualify as a full-on, old school ayatollah; he was awarded the title as a battlefield promotion by fellow clerics as they settled on him to succeed Ruhollah Khomeini, who fully earned his own title of Grand Ayatollah following years of Islamic jurisprudence. The head of state has final word on all matters: Khamenei is the velayat-e faqih, or guardian of the jurists, ruling in the place of the missing twelfth imam of Twelver Shi'ism. On his website, Khamenei goes about not only affairs of state but also the main business of an ayatollah -- helping believers navigate the dilemmas posed by the modern world. He recently ruled, for instance, that it's permissible to visit websites that compensate people who visit them, so long as doing so "does not amount to propagating corruption, spreading lies, showing wrong subjects or involvement in haram [forbidden] practices." He also says that if you've got to shave your beard, it's okay to have a barber do it.

Gary G. Sick, who followed Iran at the National Security Council before moving to Columbia University, puts considerable credence in the Khamenei's words. "Regardless of his qualifications, he has that job and he takes it seriously," Sick tells TIME. "People may not follow him as their personal ayatollah, but when he makes a statement that has to do with security and the state there is nobody that can contradict him."

Nor can he airily contradict himself, even though his fellow mullahs took the trouble to assemble a mechanism to allow him to. Consider the wonderfully named Expediency Council, designed to manage the tension inherent between a worldly parliament and the council of clerics who serve as a kind of religious supreme court. The same spirit of pragmatism allows the Leader all sorts of freedom. "Ayatollah Khomeini introduced a new reading according to which, for an Islamic state the first priority is to conserve and sustain itself," says Mehrdad Mirdamadi, an Iranian-born analyst now working at Radio Free Europe. "To do so it can even suspend the shari'a law. This later became known as the expedience of the system principle, based on which the Expediency Council was formed."

(MORE: Is Iran Dangerous -- or Desperate? Both)

This means Iran could justify pursuing even "sinful" nuclear weapons if doing so was reckoned necessary to survival of the state -- something Sick says the mullahs felt was indeed in question during the 1980s, when they secretly revived the Shah's nuclear program and explored weaponization. (That narrative is the subject of a coming post). Publicly, however, the fatwa against nukes remained operative, and with it the opportunity for concerned foreign powers to engage the issue.

"I'm glad the US government has finally realized that that gives them a basis for starting negotiations," says Sick. "We say, 'Okay, we take you at your word, you don't want to make nuclear weapons, and we want to have assurances that you're not. So we've got something to talk about here.'"

Boeing bears down on 737 fuel-savings target

(Reuters) - Boeing Co on Wednesday put some finishing touches on a make-over of its popular 737 aircraft as the U.S. planemaker battles with European arch-rival Airbus to deliver fuel savings to airlines hammered by near-record oil prices.

The company unveiled several design choices meant to lower weight and wind-resistance for its upcoming 737 MAX. The planemaker said it had decided on an 8-inch nose gear extension to give ground clearance for a larger engine fan.

The world's largest planemakers are revamping their workhorse models with bigger engines to offer double-digit percentage fuel savings in one of the most competitive market battles of the last two decades, affecting a vital source of cash generation at both companies.

"My feeling about it is what they're saying is plausible. And I'll just wait until we see the results," said Hans Weber, president of technology management consultancy Tecop International.

More decisions about the design are expected, and Boeing said on Wednesday that it would have a firm configuration for the plane next year.

Last year, Boeing unveiled plans to put new engines in its existing 737 design, providing fuel savings of up to 12 percent over the current 737. Boeing named the aircraft the MAX and said it would enter service in 2017.

Weber said the announcements shed light on the MAX program and gave clarity to the design. He said he did not expect the decisions to add to the undisclosed cost of the MAX program.

In its 40-year history, the Boeing 737 has become the world's most-sold aircraft and the backbone of airline fleets worldwide. But Boeing has taken several months to finalize the design of the upgraded 737 MAX while juggling engineering considerations, market opportunities and costs.

The airplane will compete with the Airbus A320neo, which also will feature new engines and offer fuel savings of 15 percent over the current A320.

UPDATING A BEST SELLER

Boeing said it would improve the aircraft's aerodynamics by extending the tail cone, update its flight controls and strengthen landing gear, wings and the fuselage to accommodate the weight of the larger engines. Boeing said the decisions were within the scope of the original design goals.

Wednesday's announcement, which had been eagerly awaited by investors and the industry, came after months of deliberations over engine improvements and aircraft design.

Engineering experts said Boeing's response had been hampered by the fact that there was comparatively little space to place the industry's bigger and more efficient engines under the wing of the 737, which was initially designed low to the ground to speed up baggage loading and aircraft turnaround times.

To fit inside the available space, the current engines already have a squashed appearance underneath to give the engine housing adequate ground clearance.

"Based on design work and preliminary testing results, we have even more confidence in our ability to give our customers the fuel savings they need while minimizing the development risk on this program," said Michael Teal, chief project engineer and deputy program manager of the 737 MAX program.

The MAX will be powered by engines made by CFM International, a joint venture between General Electric Co and Safran .

BOEING PUSHES BACK

In 2011, Boeing had 36 percent of new plane sales, while Airbus stacked up record sales of its revamped A320neo.

Now Boeing, based in Chicago, is hitting back with strong sales of its own redesigned narrowbody and is aiming to win the order race in 2012.

Boeing has taken more than 1,000 orders and provisional orders for the MAX since winning its first provisional order for the plane from AMR Corp's American Airlines last year. Southwest Airlines will be the first operator of the plane.

Boeing has reported firm contracts for 451 of the 737 MAX 15 customers. The company said that when provisional orders were factored in, the total exceeded 1,000. Airbus has reached definitive agreements to sell 1,289 A320neos, making what it describes as the fastest-selling new aircraft in history, and reported provisional deals for an additional 266.

Boeing is working to get performance guarantees in place for its MAX customers as it attempts to convert hundreds of provisional orders for the MAX to firm this year.

It is also spotlighting performance of its current 737 as a key selling point. The company illustrates 737 reliability with data showing the 737 family of planes has a higher rate of reliability than the A320.

Boeing's internal data show that 99.68 percent of the current generation of 737 flights are ready to depart within 15 minutes of schedule. That compares to the A320's reliability of 99.35 percent, according to Boeing.

Based on these figures, the company said a fleet of 100 737 MAX airplanes flying five flights a day would have 590 fewer delays and avoid disrupting an estimated 66,600 fewer passengers.

"The reliability of the 737 has always been higher than the competitor," said Beverly Wyse, general manager of the 737 program.

"There's more and more attention in this industry paid to protection of the passenger and passenger rights," Wyse said, noting the cost of rebooking and penalties airlines sometimes must pay customers for delays.

Both Boeing and Airbus routinely claim to have the edge in the crucial 150-seat category. According to the Airbus website, the A320 delivers "unmatched efficiency plus the best in technology for operators".

"No one can reasonably challenge the reliability of the Airbus A320," said Airbus spokesman Clay McConnell. "If you look at similarly sized and similarly aged fleet, the data would not support Boeing's claims."

New investigaiton sought of state workers' comp pool (AUDIO)

The state?s biggest worker?s compensation insurance company is drawing scrutiny from state legislators who wonder if it should be sold.?

The legislature established Missouri Employer?s Mutual in 1993 when many small businesses could not afford workers comp insurance. and when competition was limited. The state put up five million dollars? to establish the company. The majority of its board is appointed by the governor. But it operates as an independent non-profit company and controls sixteen percent of the Missouri worker?s comp market.?

Senator Scott Rupp of St. Charles, who has sponsored the bill calling for the new committee, says MEM is a complicated business with a unique status as a government-formed independent agency.

Senator Jim Lembke?s special committee investigated the company last year. He says it?s a mutual company that has never behaved as one

MEM did not pay a dividend until this year?two million dollars.? Senator Eric Schmitt, who favors the sale of the company, says it has $163 million in reserves at a time when the industry standard is $39 million.? He says MEM has outlived its usefulness.

The senate wants a new committee to study whether MEM should be privatized and sold, and what the state?s asking price should be. It has asked to approve the committee?s formation, too.

Kidney "living donations" favor some patient groups

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Americans who receive a kidney from someone who is not a relative tend to be white, highly educated and live in wealthier neighborhoods, according to a new study that calls for wider outreach to promote living donation.

Researchers say the findings demonstrate that financial and educational barriers to donating a kidney make it harder for the poor and minorities to give or receive an organ.

"We're not doing enough in this country to remove disincentives to living donation," said Dr. Gabriel Danovitch, senior author of the study and director of the kidney and pancreas transplant program at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Although medical costs for a live donor are typically covered by health insurance, additional expenses -- such as travel, lodging and time off of work -- are not.

The kidney is one of the few organs a person can give away, yet still lead a healthy life afterwards with one remaining kidney.

Since the 1990s, advances in immune-suppression have made it safer to receive an organ from someone who is not biologically related. Less-invasive surgery techniques also make it easier to give a kidney.

To see who is most likely to take advantage of that opportunity, Danovitch and his colleagues looked back on information about all 39,000 adult kidney transplants in the U.S. from 1997 to 2007 that occurred between a patient and a live donor.

They gathered up data on education, race, insurance type, zip code and whether people were related.

Spouses and immediate family were considered related, while distant relatives, friends, colleagues and others were considered unrelated.

Danovitch's group found that kidney donations from non-relatives have become more common, rising from seven percent of live donations in 1997 to 26 percent in 2006.

In most cases when patients seek a live donor, they look for a match among close family first, and non-relatives second.

Sometimes there is no relative able to offer a healthy kidney, however, because a common condition that leads to kidney failure -- polycystic kidney disease -- tends to run in families.

Danovitch said that in a few cases organs came from volunteers who had no relationship at all with the transplant recipient, but the vast majority of the time the unrelated donors had an emotional relationship with the patient -- mostly they were friends.

His team also found that both unrelated donors and recipients were generally older, likely to live in slightly higher-income neighborhoods than related donors and recipients and more likely to have completed a college degree.

Unrelated-transplant recipients were about 20 percent more likely than the related pairs to be in their 40s or 50s than to be under 40, for example. And they were about 25 percent more likely to be white, than to be black or Hispanic.

Thirty-nine percent of kidney recipients who were unrelated to their donors also had college degrees, compared to 35 percent of related recipients.

Patients with higher socioeconomic status are probably more likely to have access to potential donors who have similar means and resources, Danovitch's group writes in their report, published in the Journal of Urology.

"It's not because (people in lower socioeconomic-status groups) care about their loved ones any less, but because they can't pay for the flight, the hotel, or losing their job," he told Reuters Health.

Kidney donors typically have to take six weeks off work after the transplant, said Dr. Arthur Matas, the director of the Renal Transplant Program at the University of Minnesota, who was not involved in the new study.

Matas said that informational barriers might explain the finding that recipients of organs from unrelated donors are more likely to have had more formal education.

"If you don't know how to get access to healthcare, then you're not going to get referred to the tertiary centers that do (living donor) transplants," Matas told Reuters Health.

"Formal education level may correlate with awareness of the benefits of living donation, which can affect the willingness to donate and receive a kidney," Danovitch's team writes.

Cultural differences could also factor in to the results, they note.

Dr. Amber Reeves-Daniel, the medical director of abdominal organ transplant at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, said she's made a similar observation at her center -- that African American transplant recipients almost always receive a live donor kidney from a relative.

"I think there's a sense of closeness in the African American family structure of, 'we're going to make this work,'" said Reeves-Daniel, who was not involved in the study. "If that doesn't work out, then they say, 'I would just get a kidney from a deceased donor,'" rather than seek out a kidney donor outside of the family.

The trouble with waiting for a kidney from a deceased donor is that hopeful recipients far outnumber the availability of organs. According to the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network, 91,000 people are waiting for a kidney.

The United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) is in charge of the waiting list for deceased-donor organs.

UNOS would not comment on the study because the organization does not allocate living-donor organs.

"One of the great benefits of living kidney donor transplant is you don't have to wait," said Dr. John Friedewald at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, who did not participate in the research.

While there are health risks for people who donate a kidney, Danovitch said he'd like to see more people have the chance to donate if they want to.

That might include finding ways to reimburse people for the costs that insurance companies typically don't cover, such as time off work.

Low-income organ donors can seek some financial help from the National Living Donor Assistance Center, a federally-funded program to help cover the costs of providing an organ.

Danovitch said in addition to the financial hurdles, the educational barriers also need to be addressed to make sure all kidney donors and recipients have an equal opportunity to share.

KSBC and 'bad English' | PG's Pensieve

Today?s newspaper reports that the 13 members present in a special meeting of the Bar Council of Karnataka (KSBC) unanimously adopted a resolution to remove its chairman Anandkumar Appu Magadum. They voted against him for ?bad English? as he was not even able to properly read out the farewell speech for former Chief Justice Jagadish Singh Khehar and welcome speech for Chief Justice Vikaramajit Sen.?Senior advocates said the KSBC president?s speeches had brought disrepute to the organisation, which controls the entire legal fraternity in the State. ?? you have made a mockery of the entire legal fraternity by your bad pronunciation and speech,? the members have said in their letters written since November 8, 2011.

This is for the first time in the 51-year history of the Bar Council that its chairman has been removed through a no-trust motion.

Business of teaching spoken English seems to be doing well, as demonstrated by the growing number of such schools and their big claims advertised in poor English. Google search on ?teaching spoken English? gives about 23,600,000 results?(0.25 seconds.) The fresh ex-Chairman of the bar council could start a new institute to teach English.

Some businesses do better not because of their effectiveness, but because many people drop out without completing the term. People are hooked by the promises and are disenchanted when they realise that they have to be committed and need to put own efforts to learn anything.

Often we meet people who say that their English is not good as their medium of instructions in the school was not English, but their mother tongue. Such people are often poor in expressing anything clearly in their mother-tongue either. Formulating ideas with logical thinking and a desire to share knowledge are the core ingredients to make one proficient in speaking any language. If one develops these skills, learning a new language would become easy. Language is only a tool to translate our ideas in to words. Ideas develop in our minds, talk and writing. The tool itself does not come with ideas; we have to use the tool to model our views.

Seven Languages in Seven Weeks is a book that teaches seven programming languages in seven weeks. It is possible to dabble with seven new languages in seven weeks only if we already knew seven other programming languages. If this is our first book on programming, we can?t learn even one of the languages in seven weeks.

Dr. Richard P. Gabriel is a?Consulting Professor of Computer Science at Stanford University, a researcher at IBM Research,?lead guitarist in a rock ?n? roll band, a poet and a writer. His website, Dream Songs, gives very interesting insights on how software profession relates to other disciplines. He states:

?Writing code certainly feels very similar to writing poetry ? ?It?s the same kind of concentration ? if you look at the source code of extremely talented programmers, there?s beauty in it ? Yes, writing code and writing poetry are similar.?

Richard Gabriel has launched a program named Master of Fine Arts in Software similar to programs that offer MFAs in creative writing.

The real problem with many is not their problem with English or one specific language. It is a lack of interest in modelling our thoughts. This is a skill we can learn. ?Speaking in English is like speaking in Kannada or Tamil or Telugu ? Head of some other august body may as well get unseated for being unable to speak his or her mother tongue. Disgrace would be equal for ?bad pronunciation and bad speech? in any language.

The great British 18th century writer Samuel Johnson once said that ?the greatest part of a writer?s time is spent in reading, in order to write.?

We are Greater than the Sum of Our Parts | Not For Sale Fellowship ...

?Justice denied anywhere diminishes justice everywhere.? ? Martin Luther King Jr.

During my university experience, I spent four years in a state of incessant wide-eyed wonder, completely bewildered at the plethora of opportunities to learn.? Electives were an academic smorgasbord, allowing me to register for classes on everything from the social impact of 9/11, to the art of motion pictures, to social justice movements in developing countries.

Gradually, gender became a focal point of my studies.? Being a slightly na?ve first-year student, I expected to study nothing much beyond women?s rights.? But when my gender studies classes began discussing ?other? justice issues like poverty and race, I started feeling as though these classes were getting off course.? Why were these considered distinctively ?feminist issues??? Nobody ever explained to me in a clear, explicit way why these topics had intrinsic relevance in the feminist dialogue.

Once I began working for?Not For Sale, though, it began making sense.? I remember in my first week of orientation at Not For Sale, the social ventures team spoke to us about our?international projects.? I was desperately trying to draw the connection between some of our projects and how they related to human trafficking.? Why are we working alongside seven indigenous communities in the?Peruvian Amazon?? Why are we developing an agricultural business in?Romania??Why are we bringing soup to women in the heart of the Red Light District in?Amsterdam???Why are we partnering with a for-profit manufacturing company in?India?

Over the course of my next few weeks, I became further immersed in a culture of deeply holistic thinking.? It dawned on me that?especially as a non-profit organization?we cannot talk about justice for one group of people without discussing justice for another group.? Justice is intersectional.? Justice is multidimensional.??Justice denied anywhere diminishes justice everywhere.

It cannot be about emancipating people from slavery alone.? That is why Not For Sale aims to fulfill a?broad spectrum of survivors? needs?beyond aftercare and safety, including opportunities to develop life skills and acquire job training, long-term employment, and viable incomes that create a sustainable future.? Moreover, Not For Sale has gone ?upstream? to proactively mitigate susceptibility to forced labour through creating?social enterprises?that offer dignified employment, encourages ethical supply chains, and creates self-sustainable revenue flow.?? For example, in order to prevent tribes in Peru from becoming trafficked, Not For Sale established a relationship with the leaders of seven communities to create a social enterprise where locals earn a living wage in a cooperative to craft jewelry made from seeds harvested from the Amazonian rainforest.

We, as a whole, are greater than the sum of our parts.? From the secular perspective, structural functionalists believe that society is a complex system of interrelated parts that must work together in solidarity to promote stability and cohesion.? In a more spiritual sense, some Christians believe that the church must behave like the body?if one part suffers, every part suffers; if one part is honoured, every part rejoices. There should be no division; instead, every part should have equal concern for each other.

Unification, therefore, is an avenue for achieving justice?through pooling our resources, relying on each others? expertise, building cross-cultural relationships.? Not For Sale understands this, which is why we partner with communities and businesses across the globe, knowing that cross-sector collaboration contributes to the vitality of the abolitionist movement.

Justice is holistic.? When we talk about empowering women, we need to talk about race, poverty, economics, politics, religion?all of the connected issues.? When we talk about survivors of human trafficking, we must also discuss innovative, replicable, and sustainable solutions that mitigate the risk of vulnerable communities becoming enslaved.

Justice will prevail only when it is accessible to everyone?from the women behind the windows in?Amsterdam, to stateless children in?Thailand, to communities in the rainforests of?Peru. ?Every sector of society is needed in this quest for justice.??Everyone has a role, a skill to contribute?educators and students, musicians and athletes, Christians and Muslims, business leaders and grassroots activists.? We are all part of the solution.

Nokia town faces dim future as jobs shift to Asia

SALO, Finland (AP) ? Tomi Marjuaho repaired mobile phones for 10 years in the town of Salo in southern Finland, where Nokia, the world's top cell phone-maker, set up its wireless operations in the 1980s.

He took a severance package in 2010, as Nokia started hitting hard times, and has not found work since.

"I was the breadwinner in the family, and now it's difficult making ends meet," the 39-year-old said, at the local metal workers union club which is used by the town's unemployed as a meeting place. "It's the same story for so many people I know from Nokia days."

Salo ? along with other Finnish towns inextricably linked to Nokia ? is facing an uncertain future as Finland's most famous corporation shifts its mobile phone assembly to Asia.

Squeezed by fierce competition from Apple Inc.'s iPhone, Samsung Electronics and cheaper brands running Google Inc.'s popular Android software, Nokia has been forced to slash costs, primarily affecting its operations in Europe.

Nokia has already closed plants in Germany, Hungary and Romania; and now it's the turn of the Finnish assembly plant. Some 1,000 of the 3,500 jobs in Salo ? which until recently was Nokia's flagship assembly hub ? are being cut this year. The once-thriving technological center has already become a town of dusty, empty storefronts.

"The latest layoffs will hit us hard," said Salo's mayor, Antti Rantakokko.

He has a shiny office in a glass-plate and metal building that opened four months ago, partly paid for by Nokia's local taxes, which accounted for 95 percent of the town's corporate tax income that peaked at ?60 million ($78.85 million) in 2010.

"Nokia has been a status symbol for us, but more than that it has been a major source of income," Rantakokko said.

The company began as a paper-maker in the 1890s, and later made rubber products, cables and televisions before it came to Salo ? a center for Finland's electronics industry since the 1920s ? in 1983.

Nokia formed an alliance with a local radio and TV manufacturer, which led to the formation of Nokia Mobile Phones in 1989. Two years later, the company produced its first cell phone.

Steered by chief executive Jorma Ollila, Nokia became the world's top cell phone maker in 1998 when it overtook Motorola Inc. in terms of sales ? a major source of pride for a country that had struggled to rebuild itself after fending off Soviet invasion during two wars against Stalin's Red Army.

Nokia became Finland's largest firm, overtaking the paper and wood industry as an export earner and provided work for thousands. In 2007, it paid out a record ?1.2 billion ($1.57 billion) in corporate taxes to the government.

Nokia reached 40 percent global market share in 2008. However, sales quickly started to lag as the company suffered under the onslaught of inventive mobile technologies from the U.S., the world's biggest wireless market.

Profits swung to losses and the struggling company's tax payment dipped to some ?2 million last year.

"There's no denying it has been a great shock to the government, but there's not much they can do," said Jyrki Ali-Yrkko, from the Research Institute of the Finnish Economy.

Nokia's importance to the vulnerable, export-dependent economy was illustrated by the flood of aid the government swiftly earmarked to regions hit by the company's cutbacks.

Finnish President Sauli Niinisto, who hails from Salo, visited Nokia's plant here on March 20 in a display of support for the laid-off workers.

"We won't abandon our friends and we won't give up," Niinisto told reporters.

To the dismay of many Finns, Nokia has gradually loosened its ties to its home nation.

It remains headquartered in Espoo, outside Helsinki, but in 2010, it appointed a non-Finn to head the company for the first time when it named Canadian Stephen Elop as chief executive. That led to a major strategy shift last year as it joined up with Microsoft Corp., Elop's former employer, to replace Nokia's platforms with Windows software in its cell phones.

Nokia still employs 12,000 people in Finland, one-fifth of its global work force, and the company will maintain research and development, production planning and smartphone customization for corporate clients in Salo and two other plants in Finland, Nokia spokesman James Etheridge said.

"Finland has been and will continue to be critical to our success. The majority of the Windows Phone engineering and development team is in Finland," Etheridge said.

Nonetheless, Nokia has stuck to its decision to move all assembly jobs to its factories in Asia, where it has two plants in China, and one each in South Korea and India.

Neil Mawston, from Strategy Analytics in London, said Nokia was one of the last big cell phone makers to shift assembly to Asia from Europe, following in the footsteps of Samsung, Motorola, and Sony Ericsson.

"It's the way things are heading right now, doing production in developing markets where there is the biggest pool of users on the planet, and R&D in developed markets," Mawston said Thursday. "Nokia has a good history of designing mobile phones in Finland for the past 30 years, so to continue to do that makes sense."

In 2008 Nokia employed 5,000 people in Salo ? nearly 10 percent of the population ? and provided work for 2,000 others among those in the IT industry who supplied it with components.

Mayor Rantakokko expects this year's corporate taxes to drop to ?14 million, mostly because of Nokia's decline.

Still, he is hopeful. The government has provided the municipality with an extra ?5 million over two years to deal with the impact of Nokia's downsizing.

"The layoffs are a bitter blow but we can't let it get us down," Rantakokko said. "Nokia will still have 2,500 workers here and will remain important to us."

"There is a technical pool out there, soon out of work, and the challenge will be to find a use for it," Rantakokko said.
