HBO?s search for a new head of sports took three months, but ended up nearby on the TV remote. ?HBO has signed Ken Hershman has as president of HBO Sports, effective Jan. 9, 2012. Hershman will replace long-time head of HBO Sports Ross Greenburg, who left the company earlier this year.
Hershman spent nearly two decades at Showtime, most recently as executive vice president and general manager of Showtime Sports.
HBO Sports programming includes boxing, original movies and documentaries such as The Curious Case of Curt Flood and Jeter 3K and original series such as 24/7 and Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel.
Under Hershman, Showtime has built its sports programming arsenal to include boxing, MMA, Nascar, NFL shows such as Inside The NFL, the MLB-centric The Franchise and A Game of Honor, which is a behind-the-scenes look at this season?s Army-Navy college football game.
?Richard [Plepler, HBO co-president] and I believe that Ken is a perfect fit for HBO Sports,? Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming, said in a statement. ?He has a deep and thorough understanding of the sport of boxing and that background will be invaluable as he transitions to his role at HBO. Ken has demonstrated a capacity to think outside the box, and the combination of his experience and reputation make him the ideal executive addition to HBO?s already stellar sports department.?
According to Hershman, ?Working at Showtime was an amazing experience, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have developed countless friendships and relationships across the organization. While I am sure that I will miss them all, I am excited by the opportunity to join the team at HBO and contribute to one of television?s most dynamic companies.?
