Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Who is the best low-priced domain registrar other than GoDaddy?
I don't want GoDaddy because one of their resellers hijacked one of my domain names and held it for ransom. I need a domain registrar who will let me mask forward my domain name to my web host and will include some free email capability. I'd like to use Yahoo again but those Yahoos won't let me change the email account on my domain. Totally user un-friendly. No wonder they're losing market price.

  2. QUESTION:
were i could find the best domain reseller progam?
i dont have any money to start with, but im really interested to be a domain reseller, you see i have gone to godaddy enom and other websites that sells domains, their reseller program cost money which i dont have, do you know any website that has this feature but dont need a lot of money to start with, i hope i could find one that a reseller program is free. hope you can help me guys. thanks in advance

    • ANSWER:
You should have to pay to get domain reseller account. But your payment is just added to your account for selling. They didn't use it.

Find resellers who sell the domain reseller accounts. They buy these reseller accounts and can give others domain reseller accounts FREE. But they will get a commission for your sales.

  3. QUESTION:
Reseller Hosting options. I need it to be a little more automated. ?
I'm looking for a reseller hosting account that allows my clients to create their own hosting account. I have come across many that will help with billing but after payment is made I still have to go and create the clients account myself.

I just need it to be a little more automated such that people don't need to contact me at any point. the GoDaddy reseller program is quite close but you have to use their domain. I need to have my domain through out the clients purchase process. preferably even through the log in process.

    Any ideas?

    • ANSWER:
Hostmysite.com has a control panel that you setup that can handle it-
call me @ 1-302-224-3978 and I will tell you all the details.

I will also waive setup fees for anyone who calls me to setup the account-

  4. QUESTION:
    Selling Domain Names and Hosting?
I am a GoDaddy reseller. The minimum hosting space I can sell is 10Gb but most of my clients need far less than that. I have seen some resellers advertise as low as 200MB with unlimited emails and mysql database. How do they sell webhosting in such small chunks?

    • ANSWER:
Plainly they have negotiated a different contract with the hosting / domain registration company.

      It's called 'Business' ...

  5. QUESTION:
domain name stolen by hosting company?
I paid for a domain name & hosting, and I prepaid annually. It was fine since 2002

Last fall new company bought out old company and didn't tell anyone. They didn't send out rewal notices. My two sites were shut down. I contacted them REPEATEDLY and they don't reply. The few times they did write back theyd "look into it" and it's still not fixed.

Turns out the original company put the ownership and all the control in THEIR name even know I paid for the name. New company locked it so I can't alter or move my name.

I contacted the upper level reseller, godaddy.com, for help. They had me fill out forms, which I did; no reply back. I filed a Reqest for Change last November for both of them formally including sending my photo ID and proof I was paying for the name; no reply. ICANN won't help me.

Right now my site is gone. They put some junky search page up.

The site isn't worth a fortune so I can't hire lawyers, but it's basically my real NAME. It's important to me

    help!

    • ANSWER:
1st off, GoDaddy sucks a lot. All I ever hear about are problems with their services. Try using Yahoo! Domains next time because they give great service, as I have two domains with them right now.

Other then that, to get your site back, you can use http://www.networksolutions.com/whois to find out who the contact person is and see they'll do anything, but you probably heading up creek without a paddle in a leaky boat - Get my meaning??? SOL.

I hope this helps, and good luck.

  6. QUESTION:
Which domain registrars offer domains with a private whois service?
I am looking to register a .org domain name, but do not which to have my address publicly available. I do not wish to register with GoDaddy due to issues with them in the past, and the + Register.com asks for is a rip-off in my opinion.

I would prefer to register through a ICANN accredited registrar rather than through a reseller.

    • ANSWER:
Namecheap currently offers free WHOIS privacy with a domain name, though they're currently a reseller. Registerfly's a registrar and offering the same promo, though many have reported problems with them.

Check out others like dotster. But be ready to fork extra.

  7. QUESTION:
How to structure my web hosting account for Multiple sites?
I'm just wondering what's the most cost effective way in organizing the hosting of websites if you are looking at building up a few.

    - At the moment, I have an hosting account with siteground and a couple of registered domains with them, one of which is the primary domain for my hosting account.

    - I also have some domains registered at Godaddy.

    - If I wanted to build a site for my godaddy domains, I can't because it's not linked with my current hosting provider.

    - If at this stage I get a reseller hosting account to another hosting provider, can I then build seperate sites for each of my domain through other registrars without transferring each domain to my new reseller account to minimize transfer fees.

    - I'm new at this so your expert opinion will be valuable.

    Thanks

    • ANSWER:
The most cost effective way to do this is to open a Dreamhost account http://www.dreamhost.com/hosting.html

      They're the best:

      1. You get a free domain from them (actually 2 if you use the promo code, more about that later), or you can use one of these free domains to transfer your existing one to Dreamhost, and extend its' registration for one more year, all for free of course.
      2. They have 500 GB of Disk Space
      3. 5TB (5000 GB) of Bandwidth
      4. You can use their huge Disk Space and host unlimited number of sites on a single account.
      5. Their price is 9.40/year (.95/month if you pay yearly)
      6. Which is a pretty standard price but they currently have a promotion: You can use the Promo Code: PLUS (at sign up page) and get a discount + 2 Free Domain Names
      7. This way you get them for .40/year (.78/month)

This is much cheaper than getting a reseller hosting.

You can continue using Godaddy for domain name registration, you don't have to switch (although I like http://www.namecheap.com more), you just have to point your domain(s) to Dreamhost. Just set ns1.dreamhost.com ns2.dreamhost.com ns3.dreamhost.com as your nameservers at Godaddy and that's it, they are now pointed at Dreamhost. Now you just have to add that domain name(s) in your Dreamhost control panel (extremely simple, it takes just a couple of seconds). Now you just have to wait a couple minutes/hours for new dns to propagate and that's it, your domains are now hosted with Dreamhost. Of course you don't have to use Godaddy/Dreamhost combination it's the same for any registrar/hosting.

I recommend you to keep domain names separate from the hosting provider. This way if you have any problems with your current hosting provider and you want to move your sites, you just have to open an account with a new hosting company and point your domains to them (set their nameservers). Of course you should use the free domains you get from your host and you can keep them there or transfer them to Godaddy (or some other registrar) in a couple of months.

P.S. I host over 20 sites with Dreamhost and register them all at Namecheap. When I want to add a new site this is the procedure I go through:

      1. Register the domain example.com with Namecheap
      2. Enter the name servers ns1.dreamhost.com ns2.dr...
      3. Go to my Dreamhost control panel and add Domain to host: example.com
      4. Create a folder example.com copy my new site content to it and ftp it to my Dreamhost root folder and that's it. All of this takes less than 5 minutes, and I have a new site up and running.

  8. QUESTION:
What's the difference between hosting with unlimited domains and reselling hosting?
I have a need to host a half dozen domains, four of which are for clients. I figure I can make a couple of bucks here. Godaddy.com has a deal for .99 a month with unlimited domains, but I don't think this would be a reseller arrangement. What is the difference between this and a reseller account? Couldn't I host my client's domains on this account and charge them? Confused...

    • ANSWER:
If you host your clients sites on your account, they will not have access to those accounts without going into your file structure. Even though they can be limited to their own files, you will have to add them as add-on domains, which add folders under yours.

Reseller accounts allow you to create totally separate accounts for your clients, with their own file space and logins. If they break any of the hosting rules, only their site will be shut down, instead of yours and all those added onto your account.
