Ford to fix throttle on older Taurus, Sable sedans

(AP) ? Ford has agreed to fix sticky throttles on nearly 468,000 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable sedans.

Because of the company's decision, U.S. safety regulators have closed an investigation into the problem.

Last fall, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began investigating cars from the 2000 through 2003 model years. The safety agency and Ford received 100 complaints about throttles on cars with 3-Liter, four-valve Duratec V-6 engines.

The agency says Ford agreed to a "customer satisfaction campaign" and will fix problems for free.

Ford says the throttle cables can be damaged or disconnected during maintenance. Five crashes were reported, but no injuries.

Dealers will inspect the cables and add reinforcement to tabs that hold the cables in place. If the tabs are missing, the whole cable will be replaced.

NHTSA closed its investigation this past Wednesday, the agency said in documents posted Sunday on its website.

Ford says in a letter to dealers that they should replace throttle cables that have missing retention tabs. All the vehicles will get a reinforcement clip that will better hold the cables in place.

Ford was to mail letters to owners starting June 24, and dealers were told to repair vehicles even if the owners don't have the letters.

The Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable and are nearly identical cars. Ford ended the Mercury brand more than two years ago.

Tribune to acquire 19 TV stations for $2.73B

(AP) ? Tribune Co. said Monday that it reached a deal to buy Local TV Holdings LLC's 19 TV stations for $2.73 billion in cash, significantly boosting its television business as it looks to sell its newspaper operations.

Tribune currently owns 23 TV stations and cable network WGN America, along with the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times and other newspapers. It says the deal will make it the country's largest commercial TV station owner with 42 stations.

Tribune Co. said it expects the deal to boost its profits immediately and result in more than $100 million in annual cost savings within five years. Local TV's holdings include stations in Denver, Cleveland, St. Louis and other major cities.

Meanwhile, the Chicago company said the increased scale will help it maximize its national and local advertising sales, while also giving it a larger footprint to distribute its video and digital content.

"This is a transformational acquisition for Tribune ? it makes us the No. 1 local TV affiliate group in America, expands the distribution platform for our high-quality video content, and extends the reach of our digital products to new audiences across the country," ?Tribune Co. President and CEO Peter Liguori said in a statement.

Tribune Co. is trying to sell its newspapers to focus on its more profitable broadcasting operations. The newspaper sale is being done at the behest of a group of lenders that took over the Tribune as part of a bankruptcy reorganization.

The newspapers have been hurt by a shift that has driven more readers and advertisers to the Internet and mobile devices. The downturn in print advertising was one of the factors that caused Tribune Co. to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2008. It emerged from court oversight at the end of 2012.

Other traditional newspaper companies are also adding TV stations. Last month, Gannett Co., the publisher of USA Today, announced plans to buy TV station owner Belo Corp. for about $1.5 billion. If approved, the all-cash deal will make Gannett the fourth-largest broadcast group in the U.S.

Local TV is principally owned by private equity firm Oak Hill Capital Partners.

The deal, which remains subject to antitrust and Federal Communications Commission approvals, is expected to close by the end of 2013. Tribune Co. said it has received committed financing of up to $4.1 billion and expects the deal will be financed through a combination of debt financing and cash on hand.

AOC Q2963PM

If you have more than one monitor on your desktop and want to free up some valuable workplace real estate, consider replacing it with an ultra-wide monitor like the AOC Q2963PM . This 29-inch display has a resolution of 2,560-by-1,080, a 21:9 aspect ratio, and an IPS panel that offers rich color reproduction. It offers every video port you'll ever need and is reasonably priced, but it's not without a few minor flaws; it loses luminance when viewed from a top and bottom angle and it lacks ergonomic adjustability.

Design and Features
The Q2963PM's massive screen is housed in a matte black cabinet with uber-thin top and side bezels. The side bezels are curve around to the back of the cabinet and the 0.75-inch bottom bezel holds a small shiny AOC logo. There are four function buttons, a power switch, and a blue LED power light on the right side of the cabinet. None of the buttons are labeled but that's not a problem; pressing any key brings up an on-screen label that uses large icons to describe what each button does.

All of the I/O ports are mounted on the wedge-shaped stand, which has a removable base so you can hang the monitor on a wall using the VESA mounting holes. On the right side of the mounting arm are DVI, VGA, and DisplayPort inputs, while halfway down the arm, just above where it is connected to the base, there is an HDMI input, a DisplayPort output, an audio input, and a headphone jack. The DisplayPort output makes it possible to daisy chain multiple monitors using special DisplayPort Multi-stream cables (not included). The stand has a hinge that lets you tilt the panel forward and backward but there are no height, swivel, or pivot adjustments.

Picture settings include contrast, brightness, gamma, and Eco mode, which is AOC's name for picture mode and includes Standard, Text, Internet, Game, Movie, and Sports presets. Color settings include red, green, and blue level adjustments, Color Temperature, and Dynamic Color Boost (DCB), which offers green, blue, and skin tone enhancement settings.

The Q2963PM comes with a couple of neat utilities, including Screen+, a screen splitter that lets you split your desktop into different panels, with each panel displaying a different window. All you have to do is drag a window to the selected panel and drop it. Also included is the AOC e-Saver power management software, and i-Menu, which lets you change picture settings using a keyboard and mouse rather than the function buttons. Included in the box are VGA, DVI, and HDMI cables as well as a resource CD. The Q2963PM is covered by a three-year parts, labor, and backlight warranty.

Performance
The Q2963PM uses an IPS panel that delivers rich color quality and good grayscale performance. It was able to accurately reproduce all steps of the DisplayMate 64-Step Grayscale test and there was no evidence of tinting in the middle of the scale. Colors were mostly accurate; as shown in the color chart below, reds and blues were nearly perfect (the closer the dot is to its corresponding box the more accurate the color) but greens were a bit oversaturated, which is fairly common among affordable monitors given green's huge color space. Fortunately, the saturated greens did not result in greenish highlights or skewed colors.

Viewing angles performance was generally good, although there was a slight loss of luminance when viewed from the top and bottom angles. I noticed this with the Dell UltraSharp U2913WM also. The Q2963PM's 5-millisecond (black-to-white) pixel response handled fast motion video without any noticeable smearing or blur. In fact, this monitor is ideal for watching movies, whether in a separate window or in full screen mode. It offers crisp image detail and the embedded 3-watt speakers are nice and loud, although they could use a bass boost.

The Q2963PM used 33 watts of power during testing while operating in Standard mode. That's a few watts less than the 29-inch Dell U2913WM (36 watts) and significantly lower than the 30-inch Dell UltraSharp U3014 (60 watts).

If you require a dual monitor setup but don't have the room on your desktop, the AOC Q2963PM is a good bet. It offers good color and grayscale performance, loads of video inputs, and multiple monitor support. And, it's reasonably priced. That said, a USB hub would be a welcome addition, as would a height adjustable stand. Both the NEC MultiSync PA271W and Dell UltraSharp 3014 offer multiple USB ports and highly adjustable stand, but you'll pay significantly more for these features and don't get the full Ultra-wide, 21:9 screen.

Feedback: Drum To Lose 1,500 To 2,000 Troops

Story Published: Jun 25, 2013 at 4:34 PM EDT

Story Updated: Jun 25, 2013 at 6:42 PM EDT

The Pentagon says Fort Drum will be losing its 3rd Brigade Combat Team.

Fort Drum Commander Major General Stephen Townsend said the net loss could be between 1,500 and 2,000 soldiers.

"Even with the loss of a brigade, I don't expect the overall reduction to have a significant impact here at Fort Drum as we expect additional maneuver battalions to be assigned to our remaining brigades. After the addition of these units to the remaining brigades, we expect the net loss to be somewhere between 1,500 and 2,000 soldiers," said Townsend in a prepared statement.

The Pentagon announced a reorganization of the Army Tuesday.?

The 3rd BCT will be inactivated by 2017 and its remaining troops will be absorbed into the 1st and 2nd Brigades.?

The 3rd BCT, known as the Spartans, was activated at Fort Drum in September 2004.

Since then, the Spartans have deployed three times to Afghanistan.

One more deployment is anticipated before inactivation.

"The soldiers of 3BCT epitomize the combined spirit of the legendary Spartans of ancient Greece and the courageous 10th Mountain veterans of World War-II. Their history will be recorded and remembered as our history, the heroism, expertise and sacrifice of the Spartan Brigade will not be forgotten," said Townsend.

The 3rd BCT is made up of roughly 3,500 soldiers.

Fort Drum is home to approximately 19,000 troops.

The cuts will take place over four years and represent about 9 percent of Drum's forces.

"The net loss of about 1,500 folks over a four year period with extended dwell time, like has no material impact on the mission nor any material impact on the economy," said north country Congressman Bill Owens (D. - 23rd District).

Speaking at a briefing Tuesday afternoon, Army Chief of Staff Geneeral Ray Odierno confirmed Fort Drum will lose a brigade combat team, as the Army goes from 45 to 33 BCTs total.

See national map of reorganizaiton plan

"We'll reinvest some of the soldiers and support personnel into the remaining brigade combat teams," Odierno said.

The cuts are part of an overall Army plan to reduce the size of its force by 80,000, a number that was agreed to as part of a budget deal in 2011.

"I am committed to ensuring Fort Drum and the 10th Mountain Division remain a strong asset for the Army, and for the North Country economy. I have been in direct contact with Army leaders to make sure they know the full value Fort Drum provides for our military, and will continue to fight my hardest to keep Fort Drum in a position of strength," said U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D. - NY).?

The other home of the 10th, Fort Polk, Louisiana, will not lose its brigade, U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu told television station KPLC.

Tuesday's cuts are separate from sequestration, which forced civilian employees to lose a day of pay over 11 days this year.

It's also separate from the "BRAC" process of closing bases, which the military wants but which Congress has blocked for the coming year.

While Tuesday's cuts were not part of sequestration, Odierno warned that if sequestration continues, Tuesday's cuts "will only be the first step."

The loss of 1,500 soldiers, while painful, is a far cry from the worst possible case that had been speculated on - 8,000 soldiers being cut.

"The announcement is disappointing. However, it is not as bad as it might have been," said Carl McLaughlin, executive director of the Fort Drum Regional Liaison Organization.

Tuesday's news, while not welcome, is likely to be viewed as Drum and the north country having dodged potentially ruinous cuts.

Tony Keating, the civilian aide to the secretary of the Army, said, "The news was, while not good, no worse than we anticipated."

Boating safety campaign preludes Memorial Day weekendOutdoors ...

The first day of summer, June 21, is still weeks away. But, for many, the Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial beginning of the season.

One of the preferred holiday activities around Pinellas is boating. Local waterways likely will be crowded, as people take advantage of three days off and what looks like good weather ahead.

National Safe Boating Week is May 18-25, and the Florida Wildlife Commission and U.S. Coast Guard are out on area waterways making sure everyone remembers safety rules.

?Florida is a great place to enjoy boating year-round,? said Col. Calvin Adams, director of the FWC?s Division of Law Enforcement. ?And even more people will be out on the water for the holiday weekend. Both the holiday and National Safe Boating Week (May 18-24) present an opportunity to emphasize the importance of remaining safe while boating.?

Sixty-seven people lost their lives in Florida last year in boating accidents, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission?s 2011 Boating Accident Statistical Report.

Pinellas County ranked No. 6 among the top 10 counties reporting accidents in 2011. Pinellas ranked No. 4 in 2010. In 2011, three fatality accidents were reported, 13 accidents with injury and 20 without injury.

The primary cause was carelessness and inattention, followed by operator inattention and machinery failure. The most frequently reported type was a collision with another vehicle, then flooding or swamping, and collision with a fixed object.

Statewide, inattentiveness of the operator is too often the contributing factor in boating accidents, FWC reports.

?Boating smart and safely could result in fewer injuries and deaths each year,? Adams said.

The FWC advises boaters to remain alert while operating a boat, to wear a life jacket and use an engine shut-off switch. Another safety tip is to designate a sober boat operator.

Wear It!

More than 67 percent of the 55 boating-related deaths confirmed in 2012 were due to drowning, which might have been prevented if life jackets had been in use, according to FWC officials. Almost 85 percent of those who drowned were not wearing a life jacket.

?In an emergency, there might not be enough time to put one on, so wearing on at all times may save your life,? Coast Guard officials said.

The Coast Guard is promoting National Boating Safety Week?s 2013 campaign slogan ? Wear It! The promotion focuses on the availability of comfortable and lightweight life jackets, as well as the safety aspects of wearing a life jacket at all times.

Safety first with passengers is the responsibility of every boat captain. The Coast Guard frowns on bow riding, which officials describe as an ?unsafe practice of remaining on the bow of a vessel while it is underway.?

Boat inspections are on the official safety list, especially for the beginning of the season, to avoid breakdowns on the water. Local Coast Guard Auxiliaries offer free, no-fault vessel safety checks. Volunteers will verify the presence and condition of safety equipment required by state and federal regulations. For more information, visit cgaux.org/vsc.

FWC strongly advocates the use of an engine shut-off switch. The safety lanyard attaches from the boat operator to the ignition. If the switch is disconnected, the engine will shut down, which could prevent the boat from running anyone who has fallen overboard and avoid injuries from the propeller of a runaway boat.

Another important safety tip is to file a float plan that details where you are going and how many people are aboard your vessel. The float plan should include a vessel description, your destination and a timetable of where you expect to be at a certain time. If you must change your float plan, make sure you tell someone who will let others know of your change in plans. In case of an emergency, a good float plan can help the Coast Guard?narrow down a search to find you.

Check the weather before taking off. The forecast for the coming Memorial Day weekend is for temperatures near 90 degrees with a slight chance of thunderstorms each day. The Coast Guard reminds residents of how quickly weather can change, ?so mariners planning of making way should keep a watchful eye on the forecast conditions.?

Working communication equipment is a must-have. The Coast Guard recommends a VHF-FM radio as the best method of communication while on the water. Cell phones can provide a backup, but should not be your only means of communication due to gaps in coverage area and the potential of a dead battery. Don?t forget the nautical charts and global positioning device.

The FWC, Coast Guard and the Pinellas County Sheriff?s marine unit will out in force Memorial Day Weekend. While much of their mission will be promoting boating safety, they?ll also be keeping a close eye out for intoxicated boaters. Alcohol use is the leading contributing factor in fatal boating accidents.

?Boating under the influence or boating while intoxicated is just as deadly as drinking and driving,? Coast Guard officials said. ?It is illegal to operate a boat while under the influence of alcohol or drugs in every state. Penalties for violating BUI and BWI laws can include large fines, suspension or revocation of boat operator privileges and jail terms.?

For more boating safety information, visit www.vesselsafetycheck.org, www.uscgboating.org, MyFWC.com/Boating or www.safeboatingcouncil.org.

To report people who are operating boats dangerously, call 888-404-FWCC or text Tip@MyFWC.com.

Winning ticket for huge Powerball jackpot sold in Florida

NBC News

The Publix in Zephyrhills, Florida, where the winning ticket was sold.

By Becky Bratu, Staff Writer, NBC News

Do you have the lucky ticket? A winner for the huge Powerball jackpot was sold at a supermarket in Zephyrhills, Fla., a Florida Lottery official confirmed to NBC News early Sunday.

The winning Powerball numbers drawn late Saturday were 10, 13, 14, 22, 52 with Powerball number 11.

Powerball's website said one winner was sold in Florida, and David Bishop of the Florida Lottery confirmed that it was sold at a Publix supermarket in Zephyrhills, a suburb of Tampa.

The jackpot of the 43-state lottery game surged ahead of the drawing and had been estimated at $600 million -- the second-largest pot in U.S. lottery history. Powerball officials later revised that to more than $590 million.

Still, that grand prize, accumulated after two months of drawings, surpassed the previous record Powerball payoff of $587.5 million, set in November 2012. That was split by two winners.

The largest jackpot in U.S. history stands at $656 million, won in the Mega Millions lottery of March 2012. That prize was split between winners in Maryland, Kansas and Illinois.

The store where the winning ticket was sold will receive an $85,000 bonus commission, according to Shelly Gerteisen, a spokeswoman for the Florida Lottery.

Who has the lucky ticket? The winning ticket for the $590 million Powerball jackpot was sold at a supermarket in Zephyrhills, Fla., just south of Tampa. NBC's Kerry Sanders reports.

The chances of winning the big prize were low ? 1 in 175.2 million ? but it didn't stop hopeful Americans across the country from purchasing about 80 percent of all possible combinations, according to lottery officials.

In addition to the big prize at stake Saturday, tickets worth $2 million were sold in New York and South Carolina. In California, which joined the Powerball lottery in April and figures winnings by pari-mutuel, two tickets each worth $2.3 million were sold, according to the California State Lottery website.

The estimated cash value of Saturday's drawing, if it had hit $600 million and the winner chose to be paid in one lump sum, would have been roughly $377 million -- before taxes, of course.

Tiffany Satchell told NBCMiami.com that she knows exactly what she'd do if she won.

"Pay off all my bills," she said. "I really want a Range Rover."

NBC News' Hasani Gittens, Justin Kirschner and the Associated Press contributed to this report.

Saturday night, someone who felt lucky may turn out to be the luckiest person in the world as they pick the numbers for the Powerball jackpot, now at $600 million. NBC's Miguel Almaguer reports.

In Myanmar, a movement for Muslim and Buddhist tolerance

Days after communal violence rocked central Myanmar in late March, leaving more than 40 people dead and raising tensions in the mostly Buddhist country, a group of Muslims and a group of Buddhists decided enough was enough.

Thet Swe Win, a Buddhist, and his friend Minn Paing Soe, a Muslim, gathered with some of their colleagues from Yangon?s active civil society scene to see if they could work together on lowering tensions.

It wasn't an easy conversation, even for these socially conscious, longtime friends. But then, nothing has been simple about the emergence of anti-Muslim sentiment in Myanmar following the end of decades of autocratic rule.

?We had a very long discussion that day and we got into a lot of arguments,? says Thet Swe Win, a construction manager by day, and the director of the Myanmar Youth Empowerment Program in the evenings. Instead of focusing on blame and disagreements over religion, the activists decided to look for a solution.

RECOMMENDED: Reforms in Myanmar: 4 reasons the military changed course

Officially, the population of Myanmar is nearly 90 percent Buddhist, about 5 percent Christian, and about 4 percent Muslim, with Hindus making up most of the rest. Many think the actual Muslim population is higher, but not reported correctly due to tensions.

A complicated mix of colonial-era resentments and a rapidly changing society contributed to the deadly March violence in the city of Meiktila, which allegedly involved some hard-line Buddhist monks. The attacks there put Muslims throughout the country on edge.

?Most [Muslims] in Myanmar are very scared and are very worried ? even me,? says Minn Paing Soe, who grew up Muslim in Yangon, has Buddhist friends and is active in both Muslim and Buddhist civil society groups.

Indeed, the religious tensions are casting a shadow over the otherwise celebrated political opening since the country?s former military junta gave way to a nominally civilian-led government in 2011. They are also a concern to foreign governments and companies now considering moving into the country. The topic is on the agenda today when President Thein Sein meets with President Obama at the White House, a landmark event for Myanmar?s new government.

PRAY FOR MYANMAR

The activists found common ground in their desire for Buddhists and Muslims to live together in peace. Thus began the Pray for Myanmar campaign, one small-scale effort to mitigate religious tensions.

The group kicked off the campaign in late March with an awareness event at the local YMCA in Yangon that brought together Buddhist, Muslim, Christian, and Hindu leaders and activists.

In April, volunteers fanned out across Yangon to distribute thousands of t-shirts and blue stickers that say, roughly translated, "I will not let religious or ethnic violence begin with me.?

Security was a concern, and one passerby, apparently posing as a reporter, got the group?s phone number and then called Thet Swe Win, spewing profanity and threatening to beat the volunteers, he said. Some others threw the stickers back at the volunteers.

But most people, says Thet Swe Win, who like most Buddhist men spent time serving as a novice monk at a local monastery when he was a boy, were welcoming of the message.

Buddhists and Muslims have lived side by side in peace in many parts of the country for generations. Minn Paing Soe, who is 25 and is currently recording a documentary on religious tolerance, notes that monks helped save many Muslims in the recent violence in Meitkila.

PLEDGE TO PROTECT RELIGIOUS MINORITIES

The government?s line is that ?religious intolerance or discrimination on grounds of religion is nonexistent in the Union of Myanmar throughout its long history,? according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs? website.

And Thein Sein?s government pledged to protect religious minorities, but authorities took a few days to stop the Meiktila violence. And some Myanmar people blame the government for actually stoking ? or at least tacitly supporting ? religious tensions, speculating that harder-line elements in the government, unhappy with the country?s move toward democratization, see such tension as a way to justify continued military influence.

Minn Paing Soe notes that his national identification card categorizes him as an ethnic Indian, even though his family has lived in Myanmar for generations. Under the constitution ?I never can be president in our country,? he notes, even though he is fiercely proud of Myanmar, eats traditional Myanmar food, wears traditional Myanmar clothing and can?t even write in any Indian languages. ?In your country, Obama?s father is Muslim, and he can be president,? he says as he sips tea at a donut shop in downtown Yangon. ?If Obama is in our country, he cannot be president ? because his father is Muslim.?

And then there is the ?969? campaign. The widespread campaign draws its name from a numerological arrangement of Buddhism?s core teachings and is pushed under the guise of a nationalistic pride movement. In practice, however, that becomes a segregation movement encouraging Buddhists to only patronize Buddhist-owned shops marked by 969 stickers.

And worse than the 969 sticker effort, says Minn Paing Soe, is the anti-Muslim hate speech that is now circulating on the Internet, following the relaxation of government censorship and media control in the past year.

ETHNIC-RELIGIOUS TENSIONS

Another distinct problem is the status of the Rohingya, a displaced population ? mostly Muslim ? that is situated in the western state of Rakhine along the border with Bangladesh.

Under a 1982 law, the government does not recognize Rohingya as citizens, instead saying that they are ?Bengalis? from neighboring Bangladesh. The Rohingya people have accused the government of land grabs, violence and property destruction. Human Rights Watch has labeled the treatment ?ethnic cleansing.?

Following separate deadly attacks on the group last year, where hundreds were killed in clashes, a commission of government appointees that included Muslims ? but no Rohingya ? recently pushed the government to do more to address the Rohingya's plight. But its proposals were controversial. They focused largely on security, and highlighted the Rohingya?s high birthrate as part of the problem, playing into anti-Muslim stereotypes, and proposed expanding family planning in the group.

Though groups like the 969 movement, which some say the government tacitly supports, are more organized and aggressive, Thet Swe Win says he thinks the peace campaign is slowly making progress.

The various civil society groups involved in the campaign sent the government a joint letter last week condemning religious violence in Myanmar ? as well as abroad, such as happened recently when Muslim extremists tried to bomb the Myanmar Embassy in Jakarta.

And on the street some of the responses to the campaign have been heartening, he said. ?One guy, he saw our stickers, he stopped and he hugged one of my friends.?

The New ?Handmade?

Screen Shot 2013-05-19 at 5.39.54 PMAmid grumblings of a “general fatigue” when it comes to software-based startups, a potentially transformative technology called 3D printing is poised to reach critical mass and mainstream awareness. Today’s news headlines about the technology tend to focus on the extreme possibilities in being able to print objects on demand – from the terrors of things like a homemade 3D-printed gun to heartwarming tales of printed robotic hands for children born without fingers. But the innovation is also powering a revolution of a different kind. An emerging class of creatives are using 3D printing techniques, not to either save or destroy the world and the people in it, but simply to create a little beauty along the way. These creatives, makers of the new “handmade” goods, are selling their art in online storefronts like Etsy and Shapeways, as well as within brick-and-mortar stores, and even museums. They range from technically adept programmers who never dabbled in hands-on art involving paint or clay or other materials, to formally trained artists and even do-it-yourselfers who taught themselves 3D modeling by watching tutorials on YouTube. Regardless of how they got there, the end result is an output of affordably priced, print-on-demand goods that reflect their own unique vision and inspirations, whether that’s a new kind of jewelry that couldn’t exist before the capabilities introduced by 3D printing, one-of-a-kind items used to decorate your home, or objects which buyers help craft themselves, using simple online tools. Here are some of their stories. This is part one of an ongoing series which will showcase some of the art that’s being fueled by the increasingly accessible 3D printing technology, and the artists behind the work. ~~~ Part One: The Formally Trained Artist Summer Powell has always been an artist. She has both undergrad and graduate degrees in graphic design, and has worked on a number of products involving mixed media, vacuum forming, and lenticular technology, while exploring the intersection of art and technology in years past. Along with a collaborator, she once produced a clock which used high-resolution animations to tell the time, for example. Powell says she first heard about 3D printing around 10 years ago and had been watching the space ever since waiting for it to become viable for use in her art. “I had industrial designer friends in New York, and I’d go see their prototyping 3D printing machines,” she says. “They were

Investigators eye fractured rail in Conn. train crash

By Richard Weizel

BRIDGEPORT, Connecticut (Reuters) - A fractured segment of track has been found on the rail line of a Metro-North passenger train from New York that derailed in Connecticut and struck another commuter train, injuring more than 70 people, investigators said on Saturday.

Authorities have ruled out foul play in Friday's collision, which occurred during the evening rush hour between the towns of Bridgeport and Fairfield, about 50 miles northeast of New York City.

Further examination is necessary to determine if track damage found at the site of the accident was a cause or effect of the train wreck, but that stretch of rail line had undergone repair work during the past month, officials said.

"We don't yet know whether the fractured train track caused the accident, or was caused by it," Earl Weener, a board member for the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, told reporters at a news conference in Bridgeport.

"We do know that the back end of the eastbound train that derailed went over that part of the track where there is a fracture, and that there was repair work done on that stretch of track within the past 30 days," Weener said.

The segment of fractured rail was being sent for analysis.

The accident involved two trains from the Metro-North commuter line that runs between New York City and parts of Connecticut. The wreck occurred when several cars of an eastbound train headed from New York to New Haven, Connecticut, left the track and collided with a train coming in the opposite direction bound for New York's Grand Central Station.

More than 70 passengers and crew members were injured, officials said. Eight remained hospitalized on Saturday, three in critical condition, Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy said.

The collision of the Metro-North trains forced Amtrak to shut down service indefinitely between New York and Boston.

The governor urged commuters who normally use the line to find alternative ways to get to work on Monday.

'FORTUNATE THERE WERE NO DEATHS'

NTSB officials arrived at the scene on Saturday to begin their investigation, which has focused in part on recent construction and repair work in the vicinity.

"The FBI was involved at the beginning, but has determined, as have we, that there was no foul play involved," Weener said.

"Frankly, we still don't know what caused the derailment and collision and will not have any answer to that question any time soon, certainly not while on site investigating," he said.

Malloy said the train cars that derailed were new and "designed to the latest standards" for safety and protection of passengers.

"To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time that a car like this has been involved in this kind of incident, and by all appearances, they responded well," Malloy said.

U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut told the news conference he had come directly from St. Vincent's Medical Center, where some of the passengers and crew were being treated.

He said he was particularly struck by the courage of one conductor hurt in the collision, a woman he identified only as Helen, who despite serious back injuries helped "many of the people off the train."

"Considering the impact, we are very, very fortunate there were no deaths," Blumenthal said.

Metro-North is operated by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, a New York state agency.

The New York-New Haven line is the busiest rail line in America and serves 125,000 commuters a day, said Judd Everhart of the Connecticut Department of Transportation.

U.S. Navy SEAL dies in Fort Knox training accident

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An elite U.S. Navy SEAL was killed and seven service members were injured in a vehicle accident during a training exercise at Fort Knox, Kentucky, the Navy said on Friday.

Special Warfare Operator Third Class Jonathan Kaloust, 23, of Massapequa, New York, died when the Humvee in which he was riding overturned at 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, said Lieutenant David Lloyd, a spokesman for East Coast-based Navy Special Warfare Group 2.

Seven people received minor injuries and six of the eight people in the Humvee were SEALs, which is an acronym for sea, air, land. The cause of the accident is under investigation, Lloyd said.

The deadly training accident was at least the second in the United States since March, when a mortar explosion killed seven Marines and injured eight service members in Nevada.

British police identify new leads in Madeleine McCann case

LONDON (Reuters) - British police said on Friday they had identified people they want to question about the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, the three-year-old who went missing in Portugal six years ago.

Madeleine disappeared from her room at a holiday resort in the Algarve, Portugal, on May 3, 2007, as her parents dined at a nearby restaurant, sparking a global manhunt and transfixing the world's media.

Speaking to the Evening Standard newspaper, Detective Chief Superintendent Hamish Campbell, head of Scotland Yard's Homicide and Serious Crime Command, said: "There are a lot of people of interest," without saying how many.

"There are people who could be properly explored further, if only to be eliminated."

British police confirmed they had identified people of interest but said they had not asked Portuguese police to arrest anyone.

Despite reported sightings the world over, the fate of Madeleine McCann remains a mystery.

Her parents Kate and Gerry were named as official suspects by Portuguese police four months after their daughter's disappearance, but in 2008 were cleared.

"Kate and Gerry remain very, very pleased with the work that Scotland Yard are doing and have been encouraged by Operation Grange from the day it began," the McCanns' spokesman Clarence Mitchell was quoted as saying by the British media.

British Prime Minister David Cameron ordered a new investigation by London police after the McCanns wrote to him in 2011 saying neither British nor Portuguese authorities had done enough to try to find their daughter.

How the Scandals Turned Obama Into a Dour Scold

Even from 2,300 miles away and across the ideological gap that separates him from President Obama, Republican Ken Khachigian can recognize the signs and even feel a little empathy for the Democratic incumbent at perhaps the lowest point of his presidency. Khachigian was there at the White House from 1970 to 1974 to watch another president cope with scandal.

?You feel besieged. You feel defensive, especially when things are coming in from all directions,? he told NationalJournal from his Southern California home, recalling his days watching President Nixon deal with Watergate. ?You do feel embattled. And it can distort, to some extent, your perception and your ability to get things done.?

Watergate, of course, stands alone in the pantheon of presidential scandals. Despite the tendency of the opposition party to hype any presidential hiccup over the past four decades as ?bigger than Watergate,? there really is only one Watergate. The comparisons this time are just as bogus as when Democrats similarly tried to elevate the Iran-Contra scandal. But there is one way in which modern-day imbroglios can almost top Watergate. That is the pressure. In 1974, we had no cable news, no Internet, and little in the way of political talk radio. ?It?s even more difficult today, because today you?ve got 24/7, nonstop media, and the blogosphere and Twitter,? Khachigian said. ?Today, there is no break. It?s just incessant.?

That ubiquitous scrutiny makes it even more important that a president remain resolute and clear-eyed about his mission. It is critical that he look bigger than his critics. And, as is always the case in politics, that he project optimism about his leadership.

It is in that regard that Obama has faltered in the days since the story of the misdeeds at the IRS broke, cranking up the political and media intensity. One can argue whether the White House was too slow to respond and stanch the bleeding. In some ways, that is a question for lawyers, who can debate how cautious a president must be in responding to such allegations. But it is hard to disagree that this president has lost his footing in the way he presents himself.

Optimism is a vastly underrated component of a successful presidency. Voters tend to reject presidents who are dour or who talk of malaise. They reward those like Franklin Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan, who offer hope and grand promises. Obama must know this. It was in many ways the basis of his improbable campaign success in 2008. And even today, beset by controversies and investigations, he pays it rhetorical service. But the message is decidedly mixed.

This week, he fled briefly to New York City and friendly audiences of Democratic donors. There, he spoke glowingly of the resilience and spirit he saw in Boston and in West, Texas, after the tragedies there. ?I?ve probably never been more optimistic about America,? he declared. But, more tellingly, he painted a depressing picture of the state of affairs in Washington and the state of his own presidency. ?I sure want to do some governing,? Obama said, almost pitiably. ?I want to get some stuff done. I don?t have a lot of time. I?ve got three and a half years left, and it goes by like that.?

And he wasn?t shy about placing the fault on others. ?The dynamic on the other side of the aisle right now runs contrary to what we need in order to succeed. They?ve got a different point of view right now, reinforced by some folks around the country that don?t share our vision for America.? At a separate speech to big-name donors there, he was even more specific, leaving no doubt that Rush Limbaugh and other radio talkers deserve blame for his presidential failings.

Obama admitted that his theory about what would follow from his reelection was wrong. He thought the vote would cure Republicans of what he sees as their knee-jerk opposition to anything he proposed, once the prospect of ousting him from office was gone. ?My thinking was when we beat them in 2012, that might break the fever,? he said. ?And it?s not quite broken yet.? (He made the same mistake out of the gate in 2009.) Taking aim at his biggest tormentor on the airwaves, the president added, ?I genuinely believe there are Republicans out there who would like to work with us, but they?re fearful of their base and they?re concerned about what Rush Limbaugh might say about them.?

He delivered a similar message the day before to Ohio State University graduates, warning them of the ?voices that do their best to gum up the works.? It is a message that suggests almost a weary defeatism in a White House only four months removed from a hopeful Inauguration Day. Even amid scandal, controversy, and investigations, it is the wrong approach for a president first elected on the strength of his inspirational ?Yes, we can? message.

?It is a mistake for him to say how tough it is to get anything done in Washington, and how his critics and enemies are out to sabotage anything he wants,? says veteran political analyst William Schneider, who is with the moderate Democratic group Third Way. ?There is truth in it, but he would do best not to talk about it.? Every president, Schneider noted, hits a low point. ?Things look like they are falling apart in Washington, and the president looks trapped. That comes with the job. You can?t control events.?

But a successful president has to appear in control of events, or at least on top of them. If people think their president has lost that control, they get frightened. And if Obama lets that perception take hold, he may look back on this week with a deep regret, and perhaps an abiding sense of a moment lost.

Some light in clean tech investing, despite the gloom | GreenBiz.com

For more than a year, media outlets have posted stories on various major venture capital firms throwing their arms up in frustration and feeling woe over their cleantech investment portfolios. These down-and-out VC stories have been coupled with broader reporting on the drop in the total VC funds issued for cleantech after two years of growth in 2010 and 2011.

Indeed, Q4 2012 experienced a particularly low VC investment period for the alternative energy and fuels subset of cleantech, with just about?$70 million in investment, the lowest quarterly mark in at least four years.?Total cleantech investments in Q1 2013 were at an even more dramatic seven-year low.

This negative has have left many pundits with a dour attitude and confused understanding of the viability of investments in clean energy and related technologies.

Clean energy investment way up in the U.S., just not from VCs

VCs invest when the both the risks and potential rewards are high. Inspiring stories of VC investments in two folks toiling away in a garage on a clever idea is a bit at the far end of risk for VCs, but certainly they do usually make bets on companies that are pre-positive cash flow, and not infrequently, pre-revenue. Once a market begins to reach a level of early maturity, risks and rewards come down, and VCs exit all but the leading edge of the space.

This transition mostly occurred many years ago in the utility-scale wind and solar project finance market, including the backing of development companies, and is in mid-transition for distributed solar PV projects. A good example of this transition is distributed solar PV developer SolarCity, previously backed primarily by VCs but then floating a portion of its common equity to retail investors in an IPO in December.

Today?s situation, with the vast majority of clean energy investment not coming from VCs, is actually a positive indicator for the maturation of clean energy markets. PricewaterhouseCoopers tracked VC investments at $3.3 billion in U.S.-based cleantech companies in 2012. Yet U.S. project investments in wind and solar ? both experiencing record totals in 2012 ? exceeded $25 billion and $11 billion,?respectively. The combined $36 billion is more than 11 times cleantech VC investments in 2012. Yet wind and solar are only a subset of alternative energy.

Furthermore, alternative energy is just a subset of cleantech, generally inclusive of environmental advances in other markets including smart grid, energy storage, energy efficiency, waste management, transportation, water provision, wastewater management and pollution abatement. Combining the project, corporate and other non-VC investments in newer technologies in these markets likely produces a ratio in the vicinity of 100 times.

Granted, some consider the word ?cleantech? to explicitly describe only the VC stage (possibly coupled with the private equity stage) of environmentally beneficial tech-based investments, but this characterization isn?t fully appreciated outside of the financial community and certainly not sufficiently comprehended by the general public.

Iran says ready for nuclear talks with world powers

By Parisa Hafezi

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Iran is prepared to pursue nuclear diplomacy with world powers before or after next month's presidential election in the Islamic Republic, its chief negotiator said on Thursday.

Saeed Jalili, who is also a candidate in the presidential race, was speaking after talks on the nuclear dispute with European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton.

"We are ready to continue our talks with the (six powers) whenever they are ready, before or after the presidential election in Iran... Talks will take place soon," Jalili told a news conference in Istanbul, without giving a date.

Jalili's meeting with Ashton, who oversees talks with Iran on behalf of the United States, Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany, followed a failed round of big power diplomacy in April, in the Kazakh city of Almaty.

Jalili also reiterated that Iran would never abandon its right to enrich uranium. Major powers want Tehran to suspend its enrichment activities to reassure the world that it is not seeking nuclear weapons. Iran denies having any such goal.

"Even after the elections in Iran, the people of Iran will not allow their right to enrichment to be taken away," he said, adding that international sanctions on Iran should be lifted.

Any movement in the decade-old standoff will now probably have to wait until after Iranians vote on June 14 for a successor to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Jalili, who declared he would run on Saturday, is one of several conservative candidates known for loyalty to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who decides nuclear policy.

Other declared challengers include pragmatic former President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani and Esfandiar Rahim Mashaie, who is close to Ahmadinejad, the outgoing president.

The final list of candidates will only emerge around May 23 when Iran's Guardian Council completes its vetting process.

The United States and Israel have not ruled out military action if diplomacy and tough trade and energy sanctions fail to induce Iran to suspend its sensitive nuclear work.

In the latest U.S. measure to try to choke off funding for the Iranian atomic program, the U.S. Treasury blacklisted an exchange house and a trading company based in the United Arab Emirates on Wednesday, saying they had dealt with Iranian banks that Washington has declared off limits.

Tehran says its nuclear activity has only peaceful purposes and that it is Israel, widely believed to be the Middle East's only nuclear-armed power, that threatens peace and stability.

Questions I Get About Getting Published | Maine Crime Writers

Jayne Hitchcock here ? I?ve been doing a lot of publicity and book signings for my latest book, True Crime Online: Shocking Stories of Scamming, Stalking, Murder and Mayhem (truecrime-online.com). The questions afterward are the usual: What is my writing schedule? Do I have an agent? How did I get published? The latter one is the most frequent as I have found on recent author panels that the majority of authors are self-published or started their own publishing houses to publish their works.

So, this is how it went for me: When I lived in Okinawa, Japan for three years, I published six books while there. I was writing articles for an off base newspaper called Japan Update and a local bank representative liked my writing style. He contacted me and asked if I could write the English version of Okinawa Tour Guide. Unlike publishing here in the USA, I didn?t work with an agent or publisher, but with the bank. I still got to work with an editor and view a galley before final printing and even had a chance to see the cover art before it went to press. The same bank then published Folktales of Okinawa. I got such a positive response that a retired Marine who had started his own publishing business, Barclay Press, asked if I had anything else I want published. He footed the bill for The Ghosts of Okinawa and we split the profit from the sales. Then came Torment, a novel I co-wrote with a retired Marine and finally Gil The Gecko, a children?s book I?d envisioned.

When I moved back to the states, I knew I had to find a publisher or agent for any books I wanted to write. Then my life did a 180 ? to refresh your memory, read my post about how it changed at http://mainecrimewriters.com/uncategorized/hello-from-a-true-crime-writer.

When I got my idea for a book about online crimes, I put together a proposal with a few sample chapters and sent them off to agents. This was back in 2000, when the Internet was still a ?baby.? The majority of agents and publishers rejected my proposal because they felt the Internet wouldn?t stay around (um, hello?) or that as soon as a book was published it would be out of date.

I was freelancing for a computer magazine and complained to my editor about the lack of interest in my book, which she thought was a great idea. She asked me if I?d sent the proposal to the parent company of the magazine. No, I hadn?t. There it was, right under my nose all this time.

I sent the proposal out, the parent company, Information Today, Inc. accepted it and in 2002 Net Crimes & Misdemeanors came out. It took yes, two years to get the book from writing to print. It?s a lot of work. After you write it, it goes to editors who vet it. You get asked questions, to add or delete parts and to verify certain things. Then it goes to the galley stage, where a copy of the soon to be final version is gone over by me and my editor for any last minute changes or to catch any mistakes not caught previously.

I had little say on the cover or the subtitle and soon it was out. My publisher promoted it a lot for me, getting me media interviews and the like. I also promoted it at speaking engagements and sent out my own press releases.

In 2006, the 2nd edition of Net Crimes came out and this time my publisher not only hired a publicist, they sent me to Book Expo America in Washington, DC to sign books at their booth and promote it.

My latest book, True Crime Online, has been promoted heavily with another publicist, me sending out my own press releases, setting up book signings and going back to Book Expo American in NYC the end of this month.

Here?s the reality of book publishing: Unless you?re Stephen King or John Grisham, or you get really, really lucky, you won?t make money from it. After my meager advance is paid off (if it is), I make a whopping $1 per book. That?s it.

But you know what, it?s worth it to me. I am a writer at heart and love to write. I make my money by doing speaking engagements and freelancing for a security company, as well as editing books and writing freelance articles and my newest bit is making jewelry with seaglass (see jahitchcock.com/seacoastcreations).

If you?re thinking about writing to become rich and famous, think again. Do it because it?s what you enjoy, not what you think it should be.

Diet Changes That Might Cut Breast Cancer Risk

By now, we all know that Angelina Jolie quietly underwent a preventive double mastectomy after learning she carried a genetic mutation that sharply increased her risk of breast cancer. Women with a faulty BRCA1 gene typically have a 45 to 90 percent risk of getting breast cancer during their life, compared to a 12 percent risk for the average woman. "My chances of developing breast cancer have dropped from 87 percent to under 5 percent," Jolie wrote in a New York Times op-ed on Tuesday. "I can tell my children that they don't need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer."

Jolie's surprise announcement shines a spotlight on breast cancer and women's health, bringing intense public attention to issues like prevention and treatment. While her condition is rare - mutations in BRCA1 and another gene, BRCA2, only cause 5 to 10 percent of breast cancers in the United States - all women can take steps to protect themselves against the disease. While you can't do anything about the genes you were born with, committing to a sound diet can help protect against breast cancer. "Researchers estimate that in the U.S., we can prevent about 38 percent of breast cancers with some basic healthy steps," says registered dietitian Karen Collins, a nutrition advisor for the American Institute for Cancer Research. "We can make a difference without doing anything extreme."

While no food or dietary approach can flat-out prevent breast cancer, the risk of developing the disease could be reduced. Here's a roundup of findings.

A plant-based diet. A recent study suggests that women who eat lots of fruit, veggies and legumes, and little red meat, salt and processed carbohydrates may lower their odds of developing estrogen-receptor negative breast cancer, which accounts for about a quarter of all breast cancers. And a study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology found that the likelihood of the cancer was 20 percent less when women followed such a diet.

Red, yellow and orange fruits and veggies. In December, researchers at Harvard Medical School said that women with higher levels of carotenoids, or nutrients found in fruits and veggies, have a lower risk of breast cancer, especially cancers that are more difficult to treat and have a poorer prognosis. Smart choices include carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, kale, red peppers and winter squash. The study was published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

[See Plant-Based Diets: A Primer.]

Walnuts. Consuming walnuts slowed the development and growth of breast cancer tumors in mice, according to a study published in 2011 in Nutrition and Cancer. Study author Elaine Hardman, a professor at Marshall University's Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, looked at the effect of a diet containing the human equivalent of 2 ounces of walnuts a day (25 to 30 walnut halves). After 34 days, mice that ate walnuts had less than half the rate of breast cancer as a control group on the same diet minus the walnuts. The number and size of tumors also were significantly smaller for the walnut group. The study authors speculate that walnuts' anti-inflammatory properties are the reason.

Cutting back on alcohol. Even a moderate amount of alcohol is "clearly linked" to an increased risk of breast cancer, according to the American Cancer Society. Compared with non-drinkers, women who have two to five drinks a day are at least 50 percent likelier to develop the disease. If you have to drink, stick to a glass of wine (5 ounces), a shot of liquor (1.5 ounces) or a bottle of beer (12 ounces) a day.

Cabbage and sauerkraut. Researchers at Michigan State University found that people who ate raw or lightly cooked cabbage and sauerkraut at least three times a week were 72 percent less likely to develop breast cancer than those who had it twice or less. High levels of glucosinolates - compounds found in cabbage - may be responsible.

Vitamin D. Multiple studies, including one published in March in Cancer Causes and Control, have linked higher vitamin D levels with a lower risk of breast cancer. In one study, women with high vitamin D intake were up to 50 percent less likely to develop the disease. In another, Canadian researchers found that women who spent time outdoors or got lots of vitamin D from their diet or a supplement were 25 to 45 percent less likely to develop breast cancer. "Vitamin D is a subject under intense research," Collins says. "And it does appear to play a role." Some of the best vitamin D sources include milk, cereal, cod, tuna, shrimp and salmon.

Peaches and plums. Researchers at Texas A&M University found that peaches and plums contain antioxidants that kill breast cancer cells while leaving normal cells unharmed. The positive effect is likely caused by chlorogenic and neocholorogenic acid, both found in particularly high levels in both fruits. Findings were published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry in 2010.

Fiber. Getting more fiber could lower breast cancer risk, according to a study published in July in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Researchers found that for every 10 grams of added fiber daily - about half a cup to one cup of beans, depending on type - breast cancer risk decreased by 7 percent. The findings are based on 10 studies involving more than 710,000 people over 7 to 18 years. Other high-fiber foods include vegetables, whole grains and lentils.

Avoiding high-fat dairy foods. A study of nearly 2,000 breast cancer survivors found that those who averaged as little as one serving a day of high-fat dairy foods had a 49 percent higher risk of dying from breast cancer than those who ate little or no high-fat dairy. The research was published in March in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. High-fat dairy includes whole milk, cream and anything made with them, such as cheese and ice cream.

Convicted Pa. abortion doctor gets life in prison

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? An abortion doctor convicted of killing three babies born alive at his rogue clinic dodged a possible death sentence on Tuesday in a hasty post-verdict deal with prosecutors.

Dr. Kermit Gosnell waived his right to appeal in exchange for a sentence of life without parole. Gosnell, 72, was convicted Monday of first-degree murder in a case that became a flashpoint in the nation's abortion debate.

Former clinic employees testified that Gosnell routinely performed illegal abortions past Pennsylvania's 24-week limit, that he delivered babies who were still moving, whimpering or breathing, and that he and his assistants dispatched the newborns by "snipping" their spines, as he referred to it.

Prosecutors had been seeking the death penalty because Gosnell killed more than one person and his victims were especially vulnerable given their age. But Gosnell's own advanced age had made it unlikely he would ever be executed before his appeals ran out.

Gosnell's lawyer, Jack McMahon, said his client accepts the verdict and isn't sorry he went to trial. He said Gosnell gave up a somewhat better deal early on but wanted to air the issues in court and is satisfied that he did so.

"He wanted this case aired out in a courtroom and it got aired out in a courtroom in a fair way. And now he's accepting what will happen. He's an intelligent guy," said McMahon, who said Gosnell would now plead to federal drug charges that are still pending.

The sentencing deal, reached after hours of terse negotiations, spares Gosnell's family the task of pleading for his life in court, McMahon said. Gosnell has six children, the youngest of them a teenager born to his third wife, who has also pleaded guilty in the case.

"He's a proud man. To bring his young family into court was something he did not want to do," McMahon said.

Gosnell was instead sentenced Tuesday to two life sentences for two of the infant deaths. He faces a mandatory third life term Wednesday in the third death, when he will also be formally sentenced in the overdose death of a patient and hundreds of lesser charges.

A 2011 grand jury investigation into Gosnell's alleged prescription drug trafficking led to the gruesome findings about his abortion clinic. An FBI raid had turned up 47 aborted fetuses stored in clinic freezers, jars of tiny severed feet, bloodstained furniture and dirty medical instruments, along with cats roaming the premises.

Prosecution experts said one teen was nearly 30 weeks pregnant when Gosnell aborted her fetus, and then allegedly joked the baby was so big it could "walk to the bus." A second baby was said to be alive for about 20 minutes before a clinic worker snipped the neck. A third was born in a toilet and was moving before another clinic employee severed the spinal cord, according to testimony.

A fourth baby let out a whimper before Gosnell cut the neck, prosecutors alleged. Gosnell was acquitted in that baby's death, the only one of the four in which no one testified to seeing the baby killed.

McMahon has argued that none of the fetuses was born alive and that any movements were posthumous twitching or spasms.

The defense also contended that the 2009 death of 41-year-old Karnamaya Mongar of Woodbridge, Va., a Bhutanese immigrant who had been given repeated doses of Demerol and other powerful drugs to sedate her and induce labor, was caused by unforeseen complications and did not amount to murder, as prosecutors charged.

"I wanted to be an effective, positive force in the minority community," Gosnell told The Philadelphia Daily News in a 2010 interview, when he predicted he would be "vindicated."

He declined to offer any remarks in court Tuesday to Common Pleas Judge Jeffrey Minehart but thanked McMahon and said he was "very satisfied" with his legal representation.

Prosecutors continued to refrain from commenting on the case, citing a gag order that is expected to be lifted Wednesday when the sentencing concludes.

Pennsylvania authorities had failed to conduct routine inspections of all its abortion clinics for 15 years by the time Gosnell's facility was raided in 2010. In the scandal's aftermath, two top state health officials were fired, and Pennsylvania imposed tougher rules for clinics.

Gosnell was also convicted of infanticide, racketeering and more than 200 counts of violating Pennsylvania's abortion laws by performing third-term abortions or failing to counsel women 24 hours in advance.
