Students? development of a sense of belonging is key to their success in higher education, a University of Leicester professor will explain in a public lecture.

Professor Jon Scott, of the University?s School of Biological Sciences, will give his inaugural lecture Ut Vitam Habeant ? Student Retention and Success on Tuesday 13 November.

Professor Scott researches both the areas of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education and the Neural Control of Movement.

His lecture will present research carried out within the University?s School of Biological Sciences into the issues contributing to student retention and success.

Professor Scott said: ?Universities and the students who study with them both invest substantially in higher education. As the scale of that investment, particularly on the part of the students, has increased and comparative statistical information regarding student achievement has become more freely available and been fed into league tables, so there has been an increase in the attention paid to those metrics.

?Although the stakes have changed, success in higher education for the individual student has always been of considerable significance. Research undertaken within the School of Biological Sciences has been investigating the issues contributing to student retention and success for a number of years.

?In this lecture I want to explore the outcomes of these different projects with particular foci on the concepts of ?fragmented transitions?, the development of a sense of belonging and the ways in which social and academic pressures interact to impact on the individual student?s success in higher education.

?Through the use of video diaries, structured interviews and focus groups we are building up a rich insight into the expectations and experiences of undergraduate students. Across the sector, significant emphasis is placed on the initial induction of students into higher education, recognising the seminal importance of this transition.

?From our work it is clear, however, that the process of ?going to university? is not a simple, linear transition but is a complex, fragmented process that continues through much of the student life cycle and impacts on integration and the development of the individual sense of belonging which underpin student retention. These observations will be discussed with specific reference to current and potential strategies for enhancing student success.?

Professor Scott received a National Teaching Fellowship from the Higher Education Academy for his contributions to learning and teaching in higher education earlier this year.

Last year, he was named UK Bioscience Teacher of the Year by the UK Centre for Bioscience in conjunction with Oxford University Press.

The lecture will be held in Lecture Theatre 1 of the Ken Edwards Building, University of Leicester main campus, at 5.30pm on Tuesday 13 November. The event is free and open to the public

Scientists raise alarm over undersea methane

A changing Gulf Stream off the East Coast has destabilized frozen methane deposits trapped under nearly 4,000 square miles of seafloor, scientists reported Wednesday. And since methane is even more potent than carbon dioxide as a global warming gas, the researchers said, any large-scale release could have significant climate impacts.

Temperature changes in the Gulf Stream are "rapidly destabilizing methane hydrate along a broad swathe of the North American margin," the experts said in a study published Wednesday in the peer-reviewed journal Nature.

Using seismic records and ocean models, the team estimated that 2.5 gigatonnes of frozen methane hydrate are being destabilized and could separate into methane gas and water.

It is not clear if that is happening yet, but that methane gas would have the potential to rise up through the ocean and into the atmosphere, where it would add to the greenhouse gases warming Earth.

The 2.5 gigatonnes isn't enough to trigger a sudden climate shift, but the team worries that other areas around the globe might be seeing a similar destabilization.?

"It is unlikely that the western North Atlantic margin is the only area experiencing changing ocean currents," they noted. "Our estimate ... may therefore represent only a fraction of the methane hydrate currently destabilizing globally."

The wider destabilization evidence, co-author Ben Phrampus told NBC News, includes data from the Arctic and Alaska's northern slope in the Beaufort Sea.

And it's not just under the seafloor that methane has been locked up. Some Arctic land area are seeing permafrost thaw, which could release methane stored there as well.

An expert who was not part of the study said it suggests that methane could become a bigger climate factor than carbon dioxide.

"We may approach a turning point" from a warming driven by man-made carbon dioxide to a warming driven by methane, Jurgen Mienert, the geology department chair at Norway's University of Tromso, told NBC News.

"The interactions between the warming Arctic Ocean and the potentially huge methane-ice reservoirs beneath the Arctic?Ocean floor point towards?increasing instability," he added.

For thousands of years, permafrost has trapped Siberia's carbon-rich soil, a compost of Ice Age plant and animal remains. But global warming is melting the permafrost and exposing the soil, causing highly flammable methane to seep out. NBC's Jim Maceda reports.

He also noted, however, that "one of the big unknowns?is?the magnitude of rapid methane escape from the ocean floor, and how natural filter?systems react and affect the future ocean, its environment and the climate."

Another unknown is what caused the Gulf Stream changes, said Phrampus, an earth sciences PhD candidate at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.

"Multiple events can play a factor, such as changing sea level or an addition of cold/fresh water from the north," Phrampus said, adding he was?hopeful that the changes might be "reversible under their own influence."

But, he added, "we need more data to resolve this, and we are currently investigating this process."

New York court finds pole dancing revenue can be taxed

ALBANY, New York (Reuters) - Pole dancers might be athletic and artistic but their performances don't qualify for tax-exempt status under New York law, a state court ruled on Tuesday.

The owners of Nite Moves, an exotic dance club near Albany, New York, had sought to have pole dancing and private lap dances qualified as tax exempt since revenue collected from "dramatic or musical arts performances" is not taxable under state law.

But the Court of Appeals, the state's highest court, decided against the club in a 4-3 ruling handed down on Tuesday.

"Surely it was not irrational ... to conclude that a club presenting performances by women gyrating on a pole to music, however artistic or athletic their practice moves are, was also not a qualifying performance entitled to exempt status," the majority wrote in an unsigned memorandum.

Nite Moves was trying to fend off a $125,000 tax bill on admission fees, beverage sales and income from private dances between 2002 and 2005. The owners argued that exotic dance qualifies for the tax exemption because it is difficult to perform and requires practice and choreography.

In dissent, Judge Robert Smith said that deciding the artistic merits of different dance forms "is not the function of a tax collector."

"The people who paid these admission charges paid to see women dancing. It does not matter if the dance was artistic or crude, boring or erotic," Smith wrote. "Under New York's Tax Law, a dance is a dance."

Andrew McCullough, who argued for Nite Moves, said on Tuesday that he is considering appealing the decision to the U.S. Supreme Court. "We're very unhappy and looking at whatever options we have," he said.

Geoffrey Gloak, a spokesman for the state Department of Taxation & Finance, said, "We're pleased with this decision, because it gives similar businesses clear guidance on the issue of sales tax when it comes to live exotic dance establishments."

Patients treated in magnet hospitals (specially designated for their nursing excellence) had 14 percent lower odds of death than those in non-magnet hospitals in a four-state study of 564 hospitals led by the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. The magnet designation, determined by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, recognizes high-quality patient care, high levels of nurse education, and nursing innovation.

"Even controlling for differences in nursing, hospital, and patient characteristics, surgical patients fared better in magnet hospitals," said lead author Dr. Matthew D. McHugh, a public health policy expert at Penn Nursing. "The better outcomes can be attributed in large part to investments in highly qualified and highly educated nurses, and practice environments supportive of high-quality nursing care."

Starting in 1994 with Penn Nursing research, studies on magnet hospitals have shown they yield lower rates of patient death. Ongoing research points to magnet hospitals' having "higher levels of nurse satisfaction, less nurse burnout, lower patient fall rates, and lower mortality among very low birthweight infants," wrote Dr. McHugh and Penn Nursing co-authors in Medical Care. "Magnet hospitals have reputations for being good places for nurses to work. Our findings reinforce that better work environments for nurses are the distinguishing factor between magnet and non-magnet hospitals and are the key to better patient outcomes."

The number of magnet-recognized hospitals in the U.S. is at about 400 -- about 8 percent of hospitals nationally. This study took place in California, Florida, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey -- four of the nation's largest states accounting for more than 20 percent of hospitalizations annually. Nearly 100,000 registered nurses took part in this study.

"The magnet recognition program is not the only means of improving the work environment, but it may provide a replicable blueprint for doing so, to the benefit of nurses and patients," said Dr. McHugh. "Hospitals that have earned magnet status have seen improvement in patient outcomes, suggesting that the process of applying for and retaining magnet recognition, and the networking opportunities that come with magnet recognition, may promote continuing quality improvement and organizational innovation."

There it was, the same shed I?ve been wanting forever, and this time it wasn?t hundreds of dollars!? I offered $75 for it and now it?s mine all mine!

I feel silly that something like a storage shed can make me so happy, but it did. Here it is?? my garage sale treasure!

Getting a Visible Six-Pack: fruit, blankets and ... - Fitness Newspaper

In a previous article I wrote about how getting great abs is more about what you put in your mouth than what you do in the gym:

?You can perform crunches or hanging leg raises ?till the cows come home but if those great abs you?re building are covered by a layer of fat, you?re still not going to have a visible six-pack or a flat, toned tummy.?

HOWEVER, while it?s true that your body fat needs to be low enough for ab definition to be visible, it?s also very important to realise that,?even if there?s barely an ?inch to pinch? on your belly,?if your abdominal muscles are small you might still not have a visible six-pack unless you get REALLY lean?.

Imagine, if you will, six small oranges and six grapefruits ? the oranges represent the ?mini? abs, and the grapefruit are the ?supersize? abs (to be fair, melons would have been a better example of supersize abs but I didn?t want to encourage your minds to wander)?

Now, both the oranges and the grapefruit, when viewed ?naked? make a pretty good six-pack:

If we now cover these abs with a very thin blanket (representing VERY low body fat levels), both the mini six-pack (oranges), and the supersize six-pack (grapefruit)?are still clearly visible:

However, when we cover the ?abs? with a thick blanket (representing a low, but not extremely low, level of body fat), only the supersize abs?(grapefruit) are clearly visible as a six-pack, and the mini abs?(oranges) resemble more of a ?toned? tummy.

?

So what?s the point of all this talk of fruit and blankets?

Well, if it?s a six-pack you?re after (rather than ?just? a flat, toned tummy) then you either have to swap your thick blanket for a thin blanket (and achieve a very low body fat percentage of somewhere around <10% for men and <15% for women) OR you can try to increase the size of your abs.

As I?ve said before, the size of your fruit will be irrelevant if they are covered with a duvet ? if you?re carrying too much extra fat around your midsection, even having supersized abs won?t give you a visible six-pack and the work you need to do is in the kitchen!

However, if your body fat is quite low and you have a flat tummy but no six-pack, it?s quite possible that a bit of focussed work on the abdominals could be all you need to get the chiseled midsection you desire and upgrade your oranges to grapefruit!

Making vinegar starts with a culture just like yogurt or sourdough bread. Add to this wine and a year and you'll have wonderful vinegar that will impress ay foodie and only get better with time.

Save the leftover bits of wine that are not consumed until you have at least a gallon or so. When you're ready to begin fill an oak barrel or ceramic crock with your unfinished wine, an equal amount of water, and the vinegar starter culture. It'll take a year for the batch to become fully ready to use but if you're bitten by the vinegar bug you can start new batches every few months so you'll frequently have new batches of vinegar maturing.

Taxes go up in 2013 for 163 million workers

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama isn't talking about it and neither is Mitt Romney. But come January, 163 million workers can expect to feel the pinch of a big tax increase regardless of who wins the election.

A temporary reduction in Social Security payroll taxes is due to expire at the end of the year and hardly anyone in Washington is pushing to extend it. Neither Obama nor Romney has proposed an extension, and it probably wouldn't get through Congress anyway, with lawmakers in both parties down on the idea.

Even Republicans who have sworn off tax increases have little appetite to prevent one that will cost a typical worker about $1,000 a year, and two-earner family with six-figure incomes as much as $4,500.

Why are so many politicians sour on continuing the payroll tax break?

Republicans question whether reducing the tax two years ago has done much to stimulate the sluggish economy. Politicians from both parties say they are concerned that it threatens the independent revenue stream that funds Social Security.

They are backed by powerful advocates for seniors, including AARP, who adamantly oppose any extension.

"The payroll tax holiday was intended to be temporary and there is strong bipartisan support to let that tax provision expire," said Sen. Orrin of Utah, the top Republican on the Senate Finance Committee. "The continued extension of a temporary payroll tax holiday has serious long-term implications for Social Security and, frankly, it's not even clear that it has helped to boost our ailing economy."

The question of renewing the payroll tax cut has been overshadowed by the expiration of a much bigger package of tax cuts first enacted under President George W. Bush. The Bush-era tax cuts also expire at the end of the year, and Congress is expected to try to address them after the election, in a lame-duck session.

The payroll tax cut could become part of the mix in negotiations that could go in many directions. But lawmakers in both political parties say they doubt it.

"I think there's a growing consensus that Congress and the president can't continue to divert such a critical revenue stream from Social Security," said Rep. Kevin Brady of Texas, a senior Republican on the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee. "I think more and more Americans understand that that payroll tax cut, while politically appealing, is endangering Social Security."

Before he was named as Romney's running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., disparaged the payroll tax cut, calling it "sugar-high economics" that wouldn't promote long-term growth.

Social Security is funded by a 12.4 percent tax on wages up to $110,100, rising to $113,700 in 2013. Half is paid by employers and the other half is paid by workers. For 2011 and 2012, Congress and Obama cut the share paid by workers from 6.2 percent to 4.2 percent.

A worker making $50,000 saved $1,000 a year, or a little more than $19 a week. A worker making $100,000 saved $2,000 a year.

The beauty of the tax cut is that is shows up in weekly paychecks, giving workers more money to spend or save. The downside is that some workers may not notice a $19-a-week increase in pay, making them unlikely to credit the politicians who made it happen.

Under the law, Congress is reimbursing Social Security for the lost revenue, estimated at $103 billion in 2011 and $112 billion in 2012. But Congress didn't cut spending or raise other taxes to offset the lost revenue, so the payroll tax cut is being financed with borrowed money, adding to the national debt.

Democrats are more willing to defend the tax cut, saying it helped prop up the economy during a rough stretch while providing what amounted to a 2 percent pay increase to millions of middle-income workers. But they, too, are concerned about maintaining Social Security's source of revenue.

"I think people realize that was a temporary thing," said Sen. Mark Begich, D-Alaska.

Rep. Richard Neal of Massachusetts, a senior Democrat on the Ways and Means Committee, said he thinks there is evidence that the tax cut helped the economy. But, he added, "I'm not sure that it met expectations."

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California said she, too, wants to let the tax cut expire.

Larry Summers, Obama's former economic adviser, is a lonely voice in Washington calling to extend the payroll tax cut. He said in a recent speech that the economy is too fragile to reduce workers' incomes.

Obama pushed for the tax cut in late 2010 as a way to increase workers' take-home pay to help boost consumer spending and provide a spark for the economy. Economists were divided on the economic benefits. Many said it probably helped increase consumer spending but there was no consensus on the magnitude.

The initial tax cut was for only a year, and many Republicans in Congress wanted to let it lapse at the end of 2011. But Obama and Democratic lawmakers successfully fought to extend it through 2012.

Obama, however, didn't include the tax cut in his 2013 budget proposal, and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner told Congress this year that he saw no reason to extend it again.

White House spokeswoman Amy Brundage wouldn't rule out an extension but wouldn't commit to one, either.

"The president fought extremely hard last year in the face of Republican opposition to ensure that the payroll tax cut was extended," Brundage said. "There are a number of tax issues that Congress will have to deal with at the end of the year, this being one of them, and we will continue to evaluate all of the options available to us at that time."

Romney's campaign hammers Obama almost every day for proposing to let Bush-era tax cuts expire for individuals making more than $200,000 and married couples making more than $250,000. But Romney's tax plan would let the payroll tax cut expire, an issue he doesn't mention on the stump.

Romney's campaign declined to discuss the issue.

44 TSA workers at Newark face firing or suspension

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) ? The Transportation Security Administration on Friday moved to fire 25 employees at Newark Liberty International Airport and suspend 19 others for what it said was improper screening of checked luggage, the latest in a series of problems at one of the country's busiest airports.

The alleged screening failures were uncovered late last year after surveillance cameras were installed in one of the airport's 25 screening rooms to check for possible thefts, the TSA said.

Eight employees were fired in June in the investigation. The latest action raises to 52 the number of TSA employees at Newark caught up in the investigation, making it the biggest single disciplinary action taken by the TSA at a U.S. airport.

An official of a union that represents some of the Newark employees said Friday it's likely the union will seek to have the employees reinstated. The union has seven days to answer the TSA's proposal.

"The charges right now seem to be improper screening of bags, which we don't feel is correct," said Stacy Dodtmann, regional vice president of the American Federation of Government Employees. "We feel they performed their jobs to what they were trained to do."

The latest group cited includes screeners, as well as managers accused of failing to effectively supervise their employees. Among the allegations is that screeners failed to open up and physically check bags that had been flagged by X-ray machines.

All the screeners cited for failing to follow procedures were removed from their jobs in November and December and given non-screening duties pending completion of the investigation, the TSA said.

The TSA has more than 1,400 employees at Newark, one of the New York area's three major airports.

"The decision to take disciplinary actions today with the proposed removal of 25 individuals and suspension of 19 others reaffirms our strong commitment to ensure the safety of the traveling public and to hold all our employees to the highest standards of conduct and accountability," said Lisa Farbstein, a TSA spokeswoman.

The theft investigation, which the TSA said was the reason the cameras were installed, did not lead to any charges. The TSA said an employee who was a suspect in that probe ended up resigning, though the cameras were left in place, turning up the screening lapses.

The previous biggest disciplinary action taken by the TSA was last year at Honolulu International Airport, where 48 employees were proposed for firing or suspension, also for failing to properly screen luggage.

All 44 employees cited Friday have the right to appeal. The proposed suspensions would be for up to 14 days, and without pay.

"This TSA corrective action will help address the recurring problems at Newark Airport and close security gaps to keep the airport and passengers safe," said Sen. Frank Lautenberg, a New Jersey Democrat who is vice chairman of the Senate Appropriations Homeland Security Subcommittee and whose request last year led to the Department of Homeland Security's investigation into security lapses at the airport.

In one incident in 2010, a graduate student slipped under a rope barrier and entered a restricted area without going through security, forcing the shutdown of the terminal for six hours and causing flight delays around the globe.

Others didn't put the public at risk but involved travelers leaving checkpoints without being properly screened.

Rep. John Mica, R-Fla., chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, criticized Friday what he called the TSA's "parade of failures."

"Clearly this is not a Newark problem or a Honolulu problem, or a problem isolated to one or two airports," Mica said in a statement. "I lay the blame at TSA because it's a bureaucracy that doesn't know how to manage an army of 65,000 employees."

Venezuela News And Views: Now what? The society we have

Now that we have gone through all the electoral?analysis?that was needed, it is time to measure the consequences for Venezuela of Sunday 7 result. What country are we left with? What can the?opposition?do? What are chavismo next steps? What if...? What about...?

I think we may as well start?with?the social?consequence?for the country since we will all suffer from that.

Beyond fraud?stories?and?campaign?hits and misses, the?reality?is that?Chavez?won?because?the system of?dependency?he created between the state and the poor worked for him. All evidence?points to that. For example we have the tale of?officials?abusing the?gullibility of people by giving them a key and telling them that that key will open the door of their future home, but if they voted for Chavez. ?That the home will be shoddy, that they?would?never be the real owners, that they could not sell, it, rent it, pass it on to whomever they wanted, is not?something?that people in need can consider objectively. But at least these people have an excuse of sorts. Those that have none in my book are those who?accepted?cash for vote. And yet part of the?Chavez?victory was based on that, and will in the future.

Once we face the harsh fact that Chavez victory may be "legal", but certainly not?legitimate, we must face even more unpleasant facts that follow.

People who voted for Chavez live in the?same?country that I live. Henceforth they also suffer from high crime, water and electricity shortages, deficient public services, deficient health care, food shortages, high?inflation? lack of real jobs, etc, etc... In fact I?probably?suffer less from these ills than they do, or at least my?means?allow me to tolerate the situation better. Yet, I voted?against?Chavez?and they voted for him. The implication is staggering: people have decided that?the?system is OK. That they may have been forced to do so is irrelevant, they did it in the end and are thus guilty of their misery, at least in part.

And yet, this is not all. When Chavez won his?reelection, all the sins he?committed?since 2006 have been?validated. It is not that he was forgiven, he never asked for forgiveness, he even went as far as saying that all these ills did not matter?because?the only thing that mattered was for him to remain in office. It is just that all his actions and crimes have been proven?irrelevant?for his voters. ?In other words, all that Chavez did, from enabling laws to allowing Venezuela to become a narco state is now "legal"?because?validated?through?the vote.

What does this tell us about our?society?

The style of the last 6 years of?Chavez?has been marked by a vulgar and?violent?language, by threats, by narco activities, by unjust?expropriations, most without?compensation, by segregation, by atrocious judicial system, etc, etc, etc... in short: by criminal activities. The degradation of our?society?has been for all to see, beyond any material consideration that we may contemplate. And yet 8 million of Venezuelans have said clearly, on October 7, that they do not care. We are in front of one of the biggest selfish acts in our?history, a?society crafted by chavismo, a society?that does not care where it benefits come from, as long as they come. This goes?beyond?entitlement.

And yet, this is the?society?that both sides inherit and will have to do with.

Michael Vick will remain the Eagles? starting quarterback, and offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg will remain the offensive play caller when the Eagles return from their bye week, a team source familiar with head coach Andy Reid?s thinking said Thursday.

Reid said Tuesday, when he fired defensive coordinator Juan Castillo, that he planned to examine every facet of the team?s operation during the bye week.

?

He did not rule out anything, including replacing the struggling Vick with rookie Nick Foles or veteran Trent Edwards and assuming play-calling duties from Mornhinweg, who has held them since the middle of the 2006 season.

?

But Reid has since determined that Vick, who has committed 13 turnovers in six games, and Mornhinweg, who is overseeing the NFL?s 31st-ranked scoring offense, will remain in their current positions.

?

The Eagles, 3-3, have lost three of their last four games after a 2-0 start. They return to action a week from Sunday against the Falcons, the only undefeated team in the NFL, and then a Monday night game in New Orleans, who are 26-9 at home since 2008.?

The Jaguars, averaging 13 points per game, are the only NFL team scoring points at a slower pace than the Eagles, who have 103 points in six games -- 17.2 per game.

Vick, 32, has committed at least two turnovers in five of six games this year -- every one but the win over the Giants. He?s lost five fumbles and thrown eight interceptions.

In 2010, Vick won eight of 11 starts, with 21 touchdowns and six interceptions and just four lost fumbles.

?

Since then, he?s 10-9 with 26 touchdowns and 22 interceptions and 13 lost fumbles.

?

Vick has been sacked 17 times, sixth-most in the NFL, and his 59 percent completion percentage is 23rd-best in the league.

?

The Eagles have scored fewer than 20 points in four of six games and have yet to score more than 24 points.

?

Their 17 turnovers are second-most in the NFL (the Chiefs have committed 21) and their most through six games since 1993, when they had 20.
