US retail sales of video games fell for 7th month

NEW YORK (AP) ? A new report says U.S. retail sales of video-game hardware, software and accessories fell for a seventh consecutive month.

Sales declined 29 percent in June to $700 million.

Sales of console and portable software ? the video games themselves ? fell 29 percent from a year earlier to $329 million. Sales of hardware fell 45 percent to $201 million. That was offset partly by a 4 percent increase in sales of accessories, to $170 million.

Thursday's report by NPD Group tracks sales of new physical products ? about 50 percent to 60 percent of the total spending. Excluded are sales of used games and rentals as well as digital and social-network spending.

The top-selling game was "Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes," from Time Warner Inc.'s Warner Bros. Interactive.

Men's involvement at home: Sports 1, housework, 0

ScienceDaily (July 12, 2012) ? Pressure to be more involved in their children's lives has many middle class men turning to sports as a way to nurture their kids. This softening of gender roles might be seen on the field, but researchers found it doesn't change traditional behavior at home -- where household chores and other parenting responsibilities are still seen as mom's job.

"Women may be unhappy about this inequality, but at the same time they value the fact that their partners are involved with the kids -- even if it is mostly manifested on the soccer field," says Dr. Tamar Kremer-Sadlik, director of Programs of the Social Sciences Division at UCLA and co-author of the study Fatherhood and Youth Sports: a Balancing Act between Care and Expectations.

The study, co-authored with Prof. Lucas Gottz?n-from Link?ping University- Sweden, appears in the current issue of Gender & Society. Drawing on a large research project conducted by the UCLA Center on Everyday Lives of Families, the study ran from 2002 -- 2005. It included middle-class families in the Los Angeles area (each with two to three children) and both parents working.

Researchers found that while some fathers may push their children to achieve athletically, they're trying to juggle that with nurturing their kids through sports and using time with the team to become emotionally closer to their kids -- whether by coaching or taking them to the games.

Still, when researchers studied how these families dealt with housework and childcare, they found that women "did the lion's share of these tasks."

"Critical research on men, masculinities, and fathers' involvement in youth sports is limited. Many studies have looked at men and sports, but not how sports relates to fatherhood," says Kremer-Sadlik. "The fathers we studied are finding ways to create a new ideal of fatherhood, but they are not creating a new ideal with their partners."

Some fathers may even use involvement in their children's sports to get out of household chores and other parenting tasks.

Banker sends confession, vanishes near Key West

ATLANTA?? After penning a rambling letter to financial regulators and writing notes to his family, a south Georgia bank director boarded a ferry in Key West, Fla., and disappeared.

Now local and federal investigators are trying to determine whether Aubrey Lee Price killed himself, as his lengthy letter ? which they've described as a confession ? would have them believe, or whether he slipped away with $17 million of investors' money. His family has told authorities they believe he's dead, but federal investigators aren't so sure and have offered $20,000 for information leading to his arrest.

"My depression and discouragement have driven me to deep anxiety, fear and shame. I am emotionally overwhelmed and incapable of continuing in this life," says the confession letter investigators believe was written by Price.

"I created false statements, covered up my losses and deceived and hurt the very people I was trying to help," the letter says.

Price apologizes at the beginning of the confession for its "lack of structure, grammar and harmony of thought." Indeed, it wanders from one subject to the next and back again and is sprinkled with grammatical errors and Bible verses. It includes claims that Price is solely responsible for the banking losses; apologies to his clients, associates and partners; claims that banking was never his area of expertise and that he got bad advice; some blame for regulators and other outside forces; repeated mentions of the stress and anxiety he says he has felt for months; and many allusions to his apparent intent to kill himself. The confession also denies that any money was stolen, saying it was all lost through bad investments.

Members of Price's family and several of his associates mentioned in court documents did not return calls seeking comment. A manager at the bank he directed, which has been purchased by another bank and reopened this week under a different name, said he couldn't comment, citing the ongoing investigation.

Price left his home in south Georgia on June 16, telling his family he was headed to Guatemala for business, said Sgt. Aaron Pritchett of the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office, which is investigating his disappearance. Two days later, Price's family received letters saying he was going to Key West to board a ferry headed to Fort Meyers and planned to jump off somewhere along the way to end his life.

Credit card records show he purchased dive weights and a ferry ticket. The ferry ticket was scanned at the boarding point, but that's where the trail runs cold, Pritchett said.

The Coast Guard searched for him, and investigators talked to the ferry crew and rental car agencies in the Fort Meyers area, to no avail.

Price has said he owns real estate in Venezuela and frequently went there and to Guatemala. Airline records show he had returned to the U.S. from a trip to Venezuela on June 2, according to a statement from an FBI investigator. Price may also own a boat that's big enough to travel from Florida to Venezuela, the investigator said.

Price became director of Montgomery Bank & Trust in Ailey, Ga., in December 2010, when a company he controlled bought a controlling portion of the bank's stock, according to a complaint filed late last month in federal court in New York. Price then opened brokerage accounts through a securities clearing and custodial firm in New York and told bank managers he would invest in U.S. Treasury securities.

Instead of investing the bank's money, authorities say Price wired the funds into accounts he controlled at other financial institutions and provided bank managers with fraudulent documents.

The FBI and federal prosecutors say Price embezzled $17 million in bank funds. The Securities and Exchange Commission has filed a complaint in federal court in Atlanta saying he defrauded investors. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. on Friday said it seized Montgomery Bank & Trust.

An associate told an SEC lawyer that since 2009, Price had raised roughly $40 million from about 115 investors, mostly in Georgia and Florida, through the sale of membership interests in his investment firm. He routinely sent investors messages saying the firm, for which he made the investment decisions, consistently had positive returns, the SEC lawsuit says. Price provided monthly account statements to investors that were falsified to hide the fact that millions of dollars were missing, his associate told the SEC.

Wendy Cross moved about $300,000 to Price's firm after a trusted financial adviser told her it would be a good investment. She met Price in person once. She described a very religious, soft-spoken man with a gentle demeanor and an air of kindness.

"He should have won an Oscar for his performance that day," she said. "He has left a path of financial carnage."

The 46-year-old from Atlanta said she discovered something was wrong late last month when she wanted to withdraw some money from the firm to invest in another business. She tried multiple times to contact the firm to withdraw money. When she texted her financial adviser, he responded that he had had no idea what was going on at the company and said he thought Price was still alive despite rumors of his suicide.

Cross said she is shocked and devastated by the loss of her savings. She owns a food truck that sells arepas, stuffed cornmeal patties popular in some South American countries, but said she will have to sell the truck because she needs the money to live. She can't afford to hire a lawyer and said she doesn't know what she's going to do next.

Price lived with his wife and children in Bradenton, Fla., but bought a home in Valdosta earlier this year, according to authorities. Price had moved his family to the south Georgia city, where his wife's parents live, just a few weeks before he disappeared. There were financial reasons behind the move, but it also appears Price may have been trying to make things easier on his family once he disappeared, Pritchett said.

Pritchett calls the case interesting and peculiar but wouldn't speculate on whether Price is still alive.

"Until we have a body, it's kind of hard to say," Pritchett said. "It's almost like a novel."

Egypt's president flexes power but keeps cautious

CAIRO (AP) ? The faceoff between Egypt's new Islamist president and the old guard military sharpened Tuesday with parliament defying orders to disband and the highest court slapping back at Mohammed Morsi in what has become an early glimpse into how he may flex his power.

Morsi's rapid-fire gambits against Egypt's entrenched institutions show he is willing to push against the establishment left from the era of deposed President Hosni Mubarak. But ? so far at least ? he and his Muslim Brotherhood allies also have displayed some restraint and pragmatism to avoid setting a collision course during a sensitive transition period.

It could point to a complicated and protracted shake-out between Morsi and Egypt's security and judicial power centers, as all sides test the limits of their powers while the country awaits its post-Arab Spring constitution ? possibly by the end of the year.

In place of an all-out confrontation, Egypt may be witnessing the new rules of political engagement being defined in a time of highly unclear guidelines: tough statements, conflicting orders and attempts to push the envelope but not tear it up.

"One of them came through the ballot box and the other is trying to monopolize power," said Gamal Eid, a prominent rights lawyer.

Already, Morsi has shown his ability to multi-task his political messages and end up somewhere in the middle.

During the campaign, he catered to hard-line Islamists with calls to strengthen Shariah law and celebrated his deep allegiance to the Brotherhood, which was long banned under Mubarak's Western-backed regime. But he also portrayed himself as son of the Arab Spring and appeared with women without head coverings.

The brief session by the Morsi-backed parliament ? lasting just five minutes ? appeared to show the same tactics of both defiance and caution.

Lawmakers convened despite the house being ordered dissolved by the military after the Supreme Constitutional Court ruled on apparent election irregularities. But the speaker, Saad el-Katatni, sought to fend off charges that the Islamist-led chamber was contemptuous of the judiciary.

He told lawmakers that the session was held only to find a way to examine the court's June 14 ruling by the court and won backing to seek an appellate "second opinion."

Later, the high court struck back against Morsi, saying his decision to recall parliament lacked any legal basis.

The president carefully avoided criticism of the court's ruling in his order Sunday to bring back the parliament. Instead, he restricted himself to revoking the military order that disbanded the chamber ? in effect picking the easier target because of widespread public frustration with the military's lingering influence over the country since Mubarak's fall.

But in taking on the military, Morsi has also picked a still formidable foe with massive resources and powerful allies in the media.

The military brass have been Egypt's de facto rulers since army officers seized power in a 1952 coup. With conscription of males in force since the 1960s and four wars against Israel between 1948 and 1973, there is hardly any Egyptian family without at least one member in active service or with military experience.

"The best strategy for Morsi now might be not to start with confrontational policies and begin to slowly create a power base for himself in the higher circles of the country's body politics," said Azzedine Layachi, a Middle East expert from St. John's University in New York. "For now, a confrontation may not only stall political transition in Egypt but could also lead to Morsi's removal from office."

Morsi can depend on the backing of a disciplined and efficient machine in the Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's most powerful political group that won just under half of parliament's seats in the country's freest election in decades.

The Brotherhood, which has spent most of the 84 years since its creation as an illegal organization, has over the years acquired an impressive record of mobilizing supporters.

On Tuesday, thousands of Brotherhood supporters filled Cairo's Tahrir Square, cradle of last year's uprising. Some of them danced and sang, while many carried Morsi portraits. They greeted Tuesday's ruling against Morsi's decree with chants of "batel," or illegitimate.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton ? who is scheduled to visit Egypt this weekend ? urged Morsi and the military to settle their differences in the spirit of the revolution.

"We urge that there be intensive dialogue among all of the stakeholders in order to ensure there is a clear path for them to be following and that the Egyptian people get what they protested for and what they voted for, which is a fully elected government making the decisions," she said during a trip to Vietnam.

But if Morsi wants to use the street to prevail in his fight with the military, he will need to show that he can draw support from beyond the Brotherhood's base of the faithful ? something that may prove tough.

Most of the youth groups behind last year's anti-Mubarak uprising are on the fence. They watch the Brotherhood and the military square off with the memories of the Brotherhood abandoning them during deadly clashes with security forces last year.

At the time, the Brotherhood said it was focusing its energy on campaigning for the parliamentary elections and, according to critics, did not want to anger the military by taking part in protests demanding that the generals immediately step down.

"I personally want parliament to be reinstated, but a great deal of people I know want court rulings to be respected," said Ahmed Badawi, a liberal activist. "For now, Morsi has the active support of Islamists."

Possibly anticipating his fight with the military, Morsi used a series of high profile speeches to win over support outside the Muslim Brotherhood, mixing revolutionary rhetoric with dramatic gestures and signs of religious piety.

"I am a president for all Egyptians," he said more than once in recent days in a bid to assure liberals, leftists and minority Christians who fear that Morsi would inject more religion into government and push them to the sidelines.

Morsi has also been trying to project the image of a strong president who commands the respect of the powerful military. For the second consecutive day, he attended a military graduation ceremony on Tuesday.

Unlike his four military predecessors, Morsi is not the supreme commander of the armed forces and, under a "constitutional declaration" issued by the military last month, he cannot declare war or order troops on the streets in the case of a domestic crisis without prior agreement from the military.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? Smartphones powered Samsung Electronics Co. to record quarterly earnings, but its shares fell Friday as lower-than-expected overall sales underlined the threat from Europe's economic malaise.

The world's largest maker of memory chips, mobile phones and flat-screen panels estimated its second-quarter operating profit at between 6.5 trillion won and 6.9 trillion won ($5.7 billion and $6.1 billion), a 79 percent jump from a year earlier based on the midpoint of that range. It will release a detailed earnings report later this month.

Analysts said the sharp rise in operating profit was driven by Galaxy smartphone sales. Although Samsung did not break out figures for each division, analysts believe about 4.4 trillion won of its second-quarter profit is from its mobile communications division, accounting for about 65 percent of its operating earnings. The preliminary profit met expectations and beats Samsung's previous record of 5.85 trillion won profit, reported in the first quarter of 2012.

But the South Korean company's guidance for second quarter revenue of between 46 trillion won and 48 trillion won was below the average market forecast of around 50 trillion won. Samsung shares closed 2 percent lower in Seoul. The broader Kospi benchmark fell 0.9 percent.

The revenue figure "means that global demand for information and technology products during the second quarter was weaker than expected," said Song Myung-sub, an analyst at Hi Investment and Securities.

The chronic European debt crisis is taking a toll on demand in Europe, North America and China, which are key markets for manufacturers of personal computers, televisions, mobile phones and home appliances. Consumers and PC and TV makers are primary revenue sources for Samsung, which supplies chips and flat-screen panels for global PC and TV makers, in addition to selling its own finished products.

The global television market shrank from a year earlier during the first half of this year, Yoon Boo-keun, president of Samsung's television and home appliance division, said at a media event Wednesday. The company is preparing for a possible crisis with a contingency scenario for each region, Yoon said.

Growth in the mobile phone industry's handset shipments this year will be the slowest in three years at just 4 percent because of uncertain economic conditions, market researcher International Data Corp. said last month.

Analysts including Lee Sun-tae at NH Securities and Investment said Samsung's low-end smartphone sales in China were less than expected in the second quarter due to competition from Chinese handset makers and slowing demand there.

While brisk demand for high-end mobile phones is helping Samsung offset weaker profit growth in its semiconductor and other consumer electronics businesses, its heavy reliance on smartphones is a source of concern, some say.

Samsung's shares have been under pressure since hitting a record high on May 2. The company failed to keep up with demand for the Galaxy S III smartphone which was released in May 29, causing delays in sales. Analysts cut estimates of Samsung's Galaxy S III sales in the second quarter to around 6 million smartphones from 7 million.

Shin Jong-kyun, Samsung's president of mobile business, promised last month that Galaxy component shortages would be resolved soon but the remarks failed to boost the company's share price.

"There are concerns about the economic situation for the rest of the year as well as views looking at Samsung's lawsuits with Apple as a risk," said Lee Seung-woo, an analyst at IBK Securities.

Samsung also lost in two legal bids to lift preliminary U.S. sales bans imposed on one of its Galaxy Tab tablet computers and the Galaxy Nexus smartphone. A California court last month accepted Apple's requests to block sales of Samsung's mobile devices that are allegedly infringing the company's intellectual property.

Although the direct impact from the temporary sales ban in the U.S. will be limited because the products are not a big part of Samsung's mobile sales in the U.S., the court decision stoked concerns about the prospects of Galaxy S III sales in North America, experts said.

Analysts forecast that Samsung will outdo its second-quarter performance and set a fresh record during the current quarter because Galaxy smartphones will likely continue its sales momentum.

Samsung's component businesses are also expected to bring a bigger profit in the July-October period as prices of memory chips and liquid crystal display panels are on track to recovery. Even though future demand for televisions and personal computers still remain murky, Samsung's component businesses are expected to benefit from tightened supply from rivals, which pushed up prices of key components for computing devices and TV sets.
