Does Photographic Memory Exist?

I developed what appears to be a photographic memory when I was 16 years old. Does this kind of memory truly exist, and, if so, how did I develop it?

?Peter Gordon, Scotland

Barry Gordon, a professor of neurology and cognitive science at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (and no relation), offers an explanation:

The intuitive notion of a ?photographic? memory is that it is just like a photograph: you can retrieve it from your memory at will and examine it in detail, zooming in on different parts. But a true photographic memory in this sense has never been proved to exist.

Most of us do have a kind of photographic memory, in that most people's memory for visual material is much better and more detailed than our recall of most other kinds of material. For instance, most of us remember a face much more easily than the name associated with that face. But this isn't really a photographic memory; it just shows us the normal difference between types of memory.

Even visual memories that seem to approach the photographic ideal are far from truly photographic. These memories seem to result from a combination of innate abilities, combined with zealous study and familiarity with the material, such as the Bible or fine art.

Sorry to disappoint further, but even an amazing memory in one domain, such as vision, is not a guarantee of great memory across the board. That must be rare, if it occurs at all. A winner of the memory Olympics, for instance, still had to keep sticky notes on the refrigerator to remember what she had to do during the day.

So how does an exceptional, perhaps photographic, memory come to be? It depends on a slew of factors, including our genetics, brain development and experiences. It is difficult to disentangle memory abilities that appear early from those cultivated through interest and training. Most people who have exhibited truly extraordinary memories in some domain have seemed to possess them all their lives and honed them further through practice.

Various parts of the brain mature at different times, and adolescence is a major time for such changes. It's possible Mr. Gordon's ability took a big jump around his 16th birthday, but it's also possible he noticed it only then. Mr. Gordon might want to have formal testing, to see just how good his memory is and in what areas. Then we can debate the nature-nurture question from harder evidence.

This article was originally published with the title I developed what appears to be a photographic memory when I was 16 years old. Does this kind of memory truly exist, and, if so, how did I develop it?.

US embassy evacuated in Central African Republic

A Centrafrican military convoy drives on a road going to Sibut, 114 miles north of Bangui, the country's capital on Saturday. Sibut was seized by the rebel coalition Seleka.

By Isolde Raftery, NBC News

As rebels approached the capital of the embattled Central African Republic, the U.S. shuttered its embassy and moved out its ambassador and about 40 diplomats, the Guardian of London reported.

?This decision is solely due to concerns about the security of our personnel and has no relation to our continuing and long-standing diplomatic relations with the (Central African Republic),? read a statement posted Friday to the embassy?s website.

The Seleka rebels seized the city of Sibut about 114 miles from Bangui, the capital, a government official confirmed to The Associated Press. Sibut, a transportation hub, fell to the rebels without a shot fired because the government army had pulled back on Friday.

The rebels accuse President Fran?ois Boziz? of not meeting terms of a 2007 peace agreement, according to The New York Times. Meanwhile, Boziz?, who grabbed power in 2003 and has since been twice elected president, has pleaded for international help, appealing to the French in particular. The French government, the former colonial power, has refused to step in.

The Central African Republic, with a population of about 4.4 million, is landlocked between other politically stable countries at the heart of the continent has a population. President Barack Obama sent about 100 special operations troops to the region in April to hunt down Joseph Kony, the rebel leader of the notorious Lord?s Resistance Army and the subject of a widely viewed, 30-minute documentary, Kony 2012.

Doctors Without Borders said in a statement this week that clashes between rebels and the army have forced residents to leave their homes ? disrupting their missions to bring medical care to the region.

?This situation could have fatal consequences for people already struggling to find care after a decade of chronic armed violence had severely limited the country?s health system,? the statement said. Doctors Without Borders, which has had a presence in the region since 1997, says that malaria is the main focus of its projects there.

Enoch Nodl-ya, a nurse anesthetist for Doctors Without Borders, provided a medical perspective on other issues faced:

For the last 10 years the population has endured the regular presence and attacks from armed men in this region. People are scared and flee rapidly into the bush. As a consequence, many women give birth in the fields without any assistance and most sick or wounded are hesitant to receive medical assistance, scared of possible violence in the populated areas. When the violence stops, we often see patients coming in an advance stage of their diseases.

Sweet Grief: Paintings and Poems by Seashore Family Literacy's ...

Sweet Grief: Paintings & Poems on Love and Loss opens on Friday, January 4, at noon in the Upstairs Gallery. Sponsored by Oregon Coast Council for the Arts, the Opening Reception for the artists is from 5pm to 7pm. OCCA invites everyone in the community to meet the artists and enjoy refreshments.

Sweet Grief is a collaboration of 12 paintings paired with 12 poems offering a powerful range of darkness and light, from the heavy weight of loss to the bright glow of gratitude. The innovative project is the work of artist Senitila McKinley, of Waldport, and writer Drew Myron, of Yachats.

Senitila McKinley, of Waldport, is founder and director of Seashore Family Literacy, a nonprofit serving low-income and homeless youth and families. McKinley works for Lincoln County School District as an advocate for homeless students, and is an ordained deacon, serving at St Luke?s in Waldport and St. Stephen?s in Newport.

Drew Myron, of Yachats, heads a marketing communications company, and as a journalist has covered news, arts, entertainment and travel for AOL?s CityGuide, Northwest Best Places and other publications. She is a writing instructor at Seashore Family Literacy, and the creator and host of ?Off the Page,? an annual event featuring Oregon writers.

Myron has written poetry to accompany the paintings by McKinley. In response to Senitila McKinley?s painting, ?How to Breathe,? Myron writes, ?In my lungs, the tight narrow space where breath is taken and given away I?m trying to learn something?? And Grief is beautiful, we agreed, then laughed, a painting by Senitila McKinley evokes these words from Drew Myron, ?I can?t recall the sound of your voice. Still, I bring flowers and meet the sky, ask it to hold me, too.?

The show will continue through January 26. Located in the Newport Visual Arts Center, the Upstairs Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 4pm. More information about the exhibit and Oregon Coast Council for the Arts is available at www.coastarts.org, or by contacting Sally Houck at the Visual Arts Center, VAC@CoastArts.org or 541-265-6569.

EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson resigns

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Environmental Protection Agency Administration Lisa Jackson says she's stepping down after nearly four years on the job.

Jackson announced her departure in a statement Thursday. She gave no particular reason for leaving but said she was ready for new challenges, time with her family and new opportunities to make a difference.

Jackson's tenure was marked by high-profile brawls with industry and congressional Republicans over such issues a global warming pollution, the Keystone XL oil pipeline and new controls on coal-fired plants.

She says she's leaving the agency, in her words, "confident the ship is sailing in the right direction."

Jackson is expected to leave after the State of the Union address in late January. Cabinet members looking to move on often leave at the beginning of a president's second term.

Obama believes not much further he can go in fiscal offers: White House

With everyone from NASA to the federal government to even Mayan experts promising the world isn't going to end Friday, perhaps now the 2 percent of Americans who believe the world will end Dec. 21 can breathe easy. But beyond Friday, there are plenty of ways humans could end up biting the dust, experts say.

No Exotic Pet Bylaw ? inbobcaygeon.com

Yasmin Nakhuda, ?former owner of Darwin, ?the IKEA monkey, ?has stated she has plans to relocate to Kawartha Lakes as there are no restrictions on owning exotic animals. ?Ms. Nakhuda is currently in a legal battle to regain custody of the monkey who is now living at the Storybook Farm Primate Sanctuary in Sunderland, Ontario.

?The City of Kawartha Lakes currently does not have an exotic pet by-law,? ?said Director of Development Services Ron Taylor. ??Staff will be bringing a draft by-law forward for council consideration early in 2013.?

A review of the city?s dog by-law earlier in 2012 looked at further restrictions to the number of animals in household and possible restrictions on exotic pets which is why the draft by-law is being prepared. ??We want to establish restrictions as owners are often unqualified to own and care for exotic pets,? ?said Taylor. ??There are safety and health concerns including disease transmission.?

Currently exotic animals are not regulated provincially leaving municipalities to pass by-laws to deal with them. ?If the by-law were approved, ?existing exotic pets in Kawartha Lakes would be grandfathered but owners would be required to adhere to licensing regulations.

AfterCollege?s Employer Popularity Index turns college recruiting into a popularity contest

graduation

Companies large and small pour millions of dollars into attracting and recruiting top talent. But other than the ultimate ?scoreboard? of hires made, it?s difficult to gauge the effectiveness of these efforts. Ideally, companies would have a constant understanding of the sentiment among potential employees toward their brand. University-focused, professional social network AfterCollege appears to have created such a metric with its Employee Popularity Index.

The San Francisco startup has collected employer preferences from more than 363,000 current college students to date and used this data to rank the top 500 most desired places of employment. According to AfterCollege, the Index uses a proprietary algorithm to normalize the data and then rank the companies in what it describes as the largest and most transparent measure of student employer demand in the US.

As of mid-November, the most coveted employer among ?tech students? was Google, with the rest of the Top 10 rounded out by Microsoft, Intel, IBM, Apple, Amazon, NSA, Facebook, NVIDIA Corporation, and AT&T. Limit the respondents to only ?engineering students? and Boeing moves to the top of the list, follower by Intel, Lockheed Martin, GE, Raytheon, and NASA, rounding out the Top 5. Similar lists are available for ?business students,? ?nursing students,? and ?allied health? students.

For companies looking to apply insights from these rankings to their marketing and recruiting efforts, the data can be further parsed on a school-specific or company-specific basis. As a result, employers can determine at which schools their popularity is the greatest, and where they might have some work to do. Similarly, potential employees can determine how likely they are to face competition for a coveted position from members of their own graduating class.

The data in the Employee Popularity Index and elsewhere on the site is viewable for free by both employers and students, however employers pay the company various subscription rates for premium features, including job posting and the ability to message student job seekers directly.

AfterCollege was founded in late 1999 while its co-founders Roberto Angulo and Brian Heifferon were at Stanford and raised limited angel funding in 2000, which enabled it to reach profitability by 2001, after which it has been self-sustaining. The company raised an undisclosed Series A round from Flywheel Ventures in 2011 to accelerate growth.

On LinkedIn, students rightfully fear not having enough relevant career information to complete an impressive profile, and suffer from a lack of existing professional connections to build a network on the social network. By removing each of these obstacles and connecting soon to be graduates with a pre-existing network of alumni, faculty, and recruiters seeking individuals in their specific schools and departments, AfterCollege was able to attract more than 3 million student job seekers last year alone.

For employers, AfterCollege is among the best ways to shortcut many of the labor intensive university department relationship building and student market research functions that would otherwise absorb the resources of HR departments. By offering a list of exclusive tools for sourcing and evaluating young talent, AfterCollege is making itself increasingly valuable to employers. And given the challenges finding work in today?s climate, students may need to watch for out of work alumni looking to make use of the service.

Obama wants 'concrete proposals' on guns by January

By Michael O'Brien, NBC News

?

President Barack Obama empaneled a new task force led by Vice President Joe Biden to develop comprehensive proposals to address gun violence no later than next month.

In the wake of last week's shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., the president announced a new initiative that would include members of his cabinet and outside organizations to generate proposals to rein in gun violence. He said that any effort should include new restrictions on guns, but also improved access to mental health services and better management of violence in popular culture.

President Barack Obama announces that Vice President Joe Biden will be placed in charge of creating new proposals that are aimed at reducing gun violence in America.

Obama vowed that the new task force would not be just another Washington commission, shorthand for the groups sometimes tasked with studying an issue or event but which often delay or dilute solutions long past the time when the original impetus for such a panel has passed.

Obama said he had asked Biden "to lead an effort that includes members of my cabinet and outside organizations to come up with a set of concrete proposals, no later than January," which the president would then push "without delay."

"This is not some Washington commission. This is not something where folks are going to be studying the issue for six months and publishing a report that gets read, and then pushed aside," the president said. "This is a team that has a very specific task: to pull together real reforms, right now."

Obama expressed support -- restating the position of his press secretary, Jay Carney -- for certain gun measures, including the assault weapons ban, limits on ammunition and closing a loophole allowing gun buyers to elude background checks at gun shows. But he stressed that those were only components of a broader effort to address violence.

The president suggested that stakeholders in those deliberations could possibly include the National Rifle Association -- the gun rights group that had gone silent in the wake of the Newtown shooting, but will hold a press conference on Friday. The president argued that mothers and fathers who compose the NRA's membership had also been impacted by the Newtown shooting.

President Barack Obama and Vice President Joseph Biden arrive at an announcement on gun reform in the James Brady Press Briefing Room of the White House December 19, 2012 in Washington, DC.

"Their task is going to be to sift through every good idea that's out there, and even take a look at some bad ideas before disposing of them," Obama said of the task force's efforts.

Already, Democrats on Capitol Hill have started to initiate some gun control efforts in the aftermath of Newtown. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., called Wednesday for Republicans to bring up a vote on high-capacity ammunition magazines by this weekend. And West Virginia Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D, introduced legislation to study the impact of violent video games on children.

Additionally, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., has said she'll bring up a bill to reinstate the lapsed ban on assault weapons of the first day of the next Congress.

Few Republicans have stepped forward to embrace any of these gun measures, though, and have focused instead on the need for improved mental health services, or school safety.

Obama said his task force's proposals would make up part of his State of the Union address, and he expressed hope that the searing images from last week's shooting in Connecticut would last in the public conscious and help advance his eventual proposals.

"I would hope that our memories aren't so short that what we saw in Newtown isn't lingering with us -- that we don't remain passionate about it, only a month later," he said.

Internet to contribute $100bn to India's GDP by 2015: McKinsey

Internet services and devices industry has potential to increase its contribution to up to $100 billion (about Rs. 5.5 lakh crore) to India's GDP and generate about 2.2 crore jobs by 2015, a report by McKinsey & Company said on Wednesday. Internet related technology industry includes personal computers and smartphone sales, e-commerce, broadband subscription, and investment in technologies like cloud and websites.

According to the report titled 'Online and Upcoming: The Internet's Impact on India', Internet generated 1.6% of the GDP or about $30 billion in 2011.

"The Internet currently contributes a modest 1.6% to India's GDP. This could grow to 2.8 to 3.3% by 2015, if India achieves its potential for growth in the number of Internet users and Internet technology-related consumption and investment," McKinsey & Company Partner Chandra Gnasambandam told reporters here.

This would increase Internet's contribution to GDP from $30 billion now to nearly $100 billion in 2015, he said.

"And while it facilitates about six million direct and indirect jobs at present, this could grow to 22 million by 2015, if India follows an inclusive path of Internet expansion." Gnasambandam said.

India with a user base of 120 million is the world's third largest Internet market and is poised to garner up to 370 million users in 2015, the report said.

China has the world's largest Internet user base with 480 million users, followed by US (245 million) in 2011.

By 2015, China is expected to have 583 million users, while the US is expected to have 279 million users.

The global Internet user base is expected to grow from 2,300 million users in 2011 to 2,662 million by 2015, the report said.

"Given current downward trends in the cost of Internet access and mobile devices, India is on the verge of an Internet boom. India is likely to have the second largest user base in the world and largest in terms of incremental growth," McKinsey & Company Global Institute senior fellow Anu Madgavkar said.

At present, India's information and communication technology (ICT) exports are the most significant component of the Internet's impact on GDP, but private consumption and investment from private and public sector have great potential to grow in the future, she added.

Madgavkar, however, added that the impact of Internet in India is constrained by the current infrastructure.

Hugo Chavez Cancer Surgery: Venezuelan President Suffers Respiratory Infection After Undergoing Procedure

CARACAS, Venezuela ? Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has a respiratory infection after undergoing cancer surgery in Cuba and must have "complete rest" for the next few days, the government said Tuesday.

The socialist leader is in stable condition after being diagnosed with the respiratory infection on Monday, Information Minister Ernesto Villegas said on television, reading a government statement.

"It has been controlled," Villegas said. "In the opinion of the doctors, this type of ailment is one of the consequences that appear with the greatest frequency in patients who have undergone complicated surgeries."

The infection appeared a week after a six-hour operation that the government has said involved complications.

"The medical team has said that President Chavez should have complete rest in the coming days and receive ... the prescribed medical treatment, with the purpose of maintaining the stability of his vital signs that he currently enjoys," Villegas said.

Concluding the statement, he said: "Long live Chavez!"

Tuesday's announcement came amid uncertainty and concern over the 58-year-old president's health.

Chavez hasn't spoken publicly since his Dec. 11 surgery for an undisclosed type of pelvic cancer. It was his fourth cancer-related operation since June 2011.

Medical experts say that it's common for patients who have undergone major surgeries to suffer respiratory infections and that how a patient fares can vary widely from a quick recovery in a couple of days to a fight for life on a respirator.

Five experts consulted by The Associated Press agreed that it's hard to predict what Chavez's likely scenario might be given the available information.

"If it's not a pneumonia ... it can be resolved in 48 hours with the proper antibiotics," said Dr. Maria Crista de Blanco, an internist at the University Hospital of Caracas.

Dr. Carlos Castro, scientific director of the Colombian League Against Cancer in Bogota, said that because Chavez has gone through chemotherapy and has probably been taking steroids, his immune system is weakened and complications of various sorts may be more likely.

"That he's stable doesn't mean that he's completely been cured of the infection," Castro told the AP in a phone interview. "I don't think he's out of danger. The first 10 days after surgery are very critical, and anything can happen."

He said that Chavez must be in an intensive care unit and under constant observation.

Chavez's elder brother, Adan, planned to travel to Cuba on Tuesday to visit the president, the government newspaper Correo del Orinoco reported. It also said that the president's father, Hugo de los Reyes Chavez, had plans to travel to Havana and that Chavez's mother might go with him, though that had not been confirmed.

Against the backdrop of Chavez's illness, many Venezuelans are talking about the possibility of a looming transition of power and a new presidential election. Before undergoing surgery, Chavez designated Vice President Nicolas Maduro as his chosen successor to take his place if necessary.

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos expressed concern Tuesday about what might happen if a post-Chavez transition were to go badly. In a radio interview, he said a peaceful and problem-free change would have "no repercussion in the region."

"What would be terrible is if that transition weren't easy, were problematic," Santos said in an interview with Colombia's W Radio. "That would generate problems in the region. That's why I've said that Chavez is a factor of stability at this time."

Chavez's government has been appointed a facilitator in peace talks between Colombia's government and rebels, and Santos noted that he has had a good relationship with Venezuela's leftist leader despite their differences.

"I hope it stays that way, whether with Chavez or with his replacement," Santos said, adding that he had spoken with Maduro on various occasions.

Government officials say the president's four children and a son-in-law have been with him in Havana since the operation. The government has said Chavez suffered complications during the operation but has been recovering.

Santos said he didn't have specific information about Chavez's condition.

"I know that it's complicated," Santos said in the interview. "He wouldn't have said goodbye in that way if he didn't have complications, but today I don't know his exact state of health, and nobody does."

"We've discussed this with other presidents, and the truth is they aren't very informed about exactly what state of health he is in today," Santos added.

The leaders of Bolivia and Uruguay have both expressed interest in traveling to Havana to visit Chavez, though so far neither has made the trip.

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff called Maduro on Tuesday to congratulate Chavez's allies for winning most gubernatorial seats in elections on Sunday, and she also asked about Chavez's health.

"Maduro told Dilma that Chavez is recovering, and the president wished the Venezuelan president a speedy recovery," Rousseff's office said in a statement on its website.

Adan Chavez, who is the eldest of six brothers in the president's family, was re-elected governor in the president's home state of Barinas over the weekend.

On Tuesday, the governor said the relatively low 53 percent turnout in the nationwide elections was a problem that affected candidates in both camps. He added that some who voted for the president's re-election in October had apparently voted for the opposition this time.

"Some seem to have had the nerve to have voted for opposition candidates. That, of course, is a big contradiction," he said in a televised speech. "It shows an ideological weakness that we have to continue working on."

Chavez is scheduled to be sworn in for a new six-year term Jan. 10. Under Venezuela's constitution, if the president dies, is incapacitated or steps down, a new election would be held within 30 days.

National Assembly President Diosdado Cabello declined to speculate when asked at a news conference whether Chavez will be back in Venezuela by Jan. 10.

"There's a date established in the constitution, and our concern really is that the president recovers and is totally healthy, and, God willing, he will be," Cabello said.

Russia military exports reached record $14bn in 2012

Published: 18 December, 2012, 19:41

Sukhoi SU-30 jet. (RIA Novosti / Pavlovskiy Alexey)

Export of Russian weapons and military equipment has exceeded all projections and reached over $14 billion in 2012, which is a billion more than previous year, according to President Vladimir Putin.

The Russian President said the value of contracts to supply of arms concluded by Russia this year has exceeded $15 billion, and the profit from the deals has reached a record high figure of $14 billion. In 2011 Russia sold arms and military equipment worth $13.2 billion. However, according to US Congressional study Russia was second to the US in 2011 with only $4.8 billion in arms deals abroad.

Aviation leads Russian exports; products for the navy and ground forces are second and third places, while air defence products are in fourth position.

The Rosoboronexport arms exporting company accounted for an overwhelming majority of the deliveries (81 percent), and 21 other subjects of military-technical cooperation accounted for the remaining 19 percent.

Among 65 countries that imported Russian weapons about 25% of the arms volume was exported to India, 15% and to Algeria and large batches have also been sold to Venezuela and Vietnam.

"Russia will certainly continue to work with its traditional partners in the field of military technology cooperation, but it is equally important for us to enter new markets, expand the range of supplies and services," said the president.

Iraq also became a Russian customer in 2012 when it concluded a contract for the supply of 42 Patsir-S1 air defence systems and 30 Mi-28NE attack helicopters worth $4.2 billion. However, on November 10 Iraq put of the deal with Russia because of suspected corruption. Moscow immediately demanded an explanation from Baghdad, but has not received an answer as yet, Kommersant daily reports.

The world?s leading arms exporter is the United States, whose weapons sales abroad tripled in 2011, reaching $66.3 billion, according to a study for the US Congress. Arabian Gulf countries were listed as the principal purchasers, with the largest customer being its ally Saudi Arabia. The United Arab Emirates purchased a cutting-edge Terminal High Altitude Area Defense anti-missile system worth $3.49 billion, as well as 16 Chinook helicopters for almost $1 billion. Other important American customers in arms sales, according to the Congressional study, include India ($4 billion) and Taiwan ($2 billion).

NASA GRAIL lunar twins begin their last burn

Dec. 17, 2012 ? Ebb and Flow -- the two twin spacecraft of NASA's Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) mission -- have begun their final rocket burns. They are scheduled to impact the moon at around 2:28 p.m. PST (5:28 EST).

NASA is providing live commentary of the pre-planned lunar surface impacts by GRAIL beginning at 2 p.m. PST (5 p.m. EST) Monday, Dec. 17. The event will be broadcast on NASA Television and streamed on the agency's website. For NASA TV streaming video, schedule and downlink information, visit: http://www.nasa.gov/ntv . The coverage will also be streamed live on Ustream at: http://www.ustream.tv/nasajpl2 .

The two probes will hit a mountain near the lunar north pole, bringing their successful prime and extended science missions to an end. The two probes are being sent purposely into the moon because they no longer have enough altitude or fuel to continue science operations.

Commentary will originate from the GRAIL control room at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. Coverage will last about 35 minutes and include live interviews with GRAIL team members. GRAIL's final resting place on the moon will be in shadow at the time of impact, so no video documentation of the impacts is expected. GRAIL data are allowing scientists to learn about the moon's internal structure and composition in unprecedented detail.

Playoff-minded Bengals beat bumbling Eagles

Cincinnati (8-6) tops turnover-prone Philly 34-13, gears up for crucial game at Pittsburgh

Cincinnati's Wallace Gilberry struts into the end zone for a touchdown after recovering a fumble by Philadelphia on Thursday.

updated 12:52 a.m. ET Dec. 14, 2012

PHILADELPHIA - Now the Cincinnati Bengals can focus on that other Pennsylvania team.

Andy Dalton threw a touchdown pass and ran for another score, an opportunistic defense forced five turnovers and Cincinnati beat the Philadelphia Eagles 34-13 on Thursday night.

The Bengals (8-6) took a half-game lead over the Pittsburgh Steelers for the last playoff spot in the AFC. But their game at Pittsburgh next week is far more important in the standings than this one.

"We've got nothing to celebrate here," coach Marvin Lewis said. "But we won and we do have some time to get ready for Pittsburgh."

The Bengals would clinch their second straight playoff berth with a win over the Steelers if Pittsburgh loses at Dallas this Sunday. A loss to the Steelers, though, likely would ruin Cincinnati's chances because it would lose the tiebreaker.

"Our goal is to win games. Period. We did that. Doesn't matter how we got there," cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones said. "We can be better. We can be higher. And that's what we take from this game. Listen, we all know we need to play better as a defense next week. Because we have ourselves a big one next week."

The Eagles' season was lost a long time ago. They fell to 4-10, losing double-digit games for the first time since 2005, the year after losing the Super Bowl to New England.

There were plenty of empty seats at the Linc, where fans are hoping this is Andy Reid's final season as coach. Reid led the Eagles to nine playoff appearances, six division titles and five NFC championship games in his first 13 years. But the Eagles will miss the playoffs for the second straight year and owner Jeffrey Lurie already said 8-8 would be "unacceptable."

"Five turnovers, 31 points. That says it all," Reid said. "Guys played hard, but you can't have those turnovers. You have to take care of the ball. Guys have to do it. I take full responsibility for them."

An interception by Leon Hall set up Dalton's go-ahead 11-yard TD run in the third quarter. Then Wallace Gilberry picked up Bryce Brown's fumble and ran it back 25 yards for another score and an 11-point lead.

BenJarvus Green-Ellis ran for 106 yards, including a 1-yard TD run in the first quarter for Cincinnati. Dalton tossed a 5-yard TD pass to A.J. Green in the fourth to cap a 24-point outburst in a span of 3:23.

"We realize what's at stake here, and we know we needed to put some football plays together," Lewis said. "We put ourselves at risk tonight, but we made plays when we needed to. We were able to get some things going with the turnovers and that definitely helped. We redirected some things at halftime and got everyone on the same page."

The Eagles committed three turnovers on three straight possessions at one point and then fumbled a kickoff when defensive lineman Cedric Thornton let the ball fall through his hands on a short kick.

After beating Tampa Bay on a last-second TD last week to snap an eight-game losing streak, the Eagles tried to make it two in a row. Turnovers got in their way again. They've committed an NFL-high 34 and forced just 12 all season.

The Eagles snapped a drought of 22 quarters without a turnover by recovering two fumbles in the second. Both led to field goals by Alex Henery, helping Philadelphia to a 13-10 halftime lead.

Rookie Nick Foles made his fifth straight start for Michael Vick, who just returned to practice this week after sustaining a concussion on Nov. 11. Foles threw for 182 yards, one TD and one interception.

Down 13-10, the Bengals started their rally with a turnover.

Hall intercepted Foles' deep pass and returned it 44 yards to the Eagles 40. Foles underthrew Jeremy Maclin, who was a few steps behind Hall.

"I feel really good anytime I have one of our receivers vertical on a guy," Foles said. "I just have to get the ball out there and make a better throw."

Green made an acrobatic catch for an 11-yard gain on third-and-9 a few plays before Dalton ran for the score to put the Bengals up 17-13.

Foles, who threw for 381 yards to lead that comeback against the Bucs, hit Riley Cooper on an 11-yard TD pass to cut it to 10-7. Foles connected with Maclin on a 46-yard pass during the drive.

The Eagles then forced their first turnover since Nov. 5 against New Orleans. Brandon Graham sacked Dalton, the ball popped loose and Trent Cole recovered at the Bengals 29.

"We win as a team, we lose as a team," said Eagles defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, who replaced Juan Castillo after six games. "We lost as a team today."

Just two plays in, Maclin fumbled after a 6-yard catch. Carlos Dunlap recovered and the Bengals started at the Eagles 44. Green-Ellis ran 29 yards on first down and scored a few plays later for a 7-0 lead.

It got uglier for Philadelphia on the next possession. Mat McBriar punted into his own blocker, Daniel Herron picked it up and ran 3 yards to the Eagles 11. But Graham sacked Dalton and Cincinnati settled for Brown's 24-yard field goal that made it 10-0.

The Eagles were again without running back LeSean McCoy and tight end Brent Celek also sat out. Both players also are recovering from concussions. McCoy missed his fourth straight game, but returned to practice this week with Vick.

NOTES: Green-Ellis surpassed 1,000 yards rushing for second time in his career. He did it with New England in 2010. ... The Eagles had a season-high six sacks. They have eight in two games since defensive line coach Jim Washburn was fired, and had 20 in first 12 games. ... Bowles confirmed he interviewed for the coaching vacancy at Temple, his alma mater.

Physicists make strides in understanding quantum entanglement

Dec. 14, 2012 ? While some theoretical physicists make predictions about astrophysics and the behavior of stars and galaxies, others work in the realm of the very small, which includes quantum physics. Such is the case at UC Santa Barbara, where theoretical physicists at the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP) cover the range of questions in physics.

Recently, theoretical physicists at KITP have made important strides in studying a concept in quantum physics called quantum entanglement, in which electron spins are entangled with each other. Using computers to calculate the extreme version of quantum entanglement -- how the spin of every electron in certain electronic materials could be entangled with another electron's spin -- the research team found a way to predict this characteristic. Future applications of the research are expected to benefit fields such as information technology.

"Quantum entanglement is a strange and non-intuitive aspect of the quantum theory of matter, which has puzzled and intrigued physicists since the earliest days of the quantum theory," said Leon Balents, senior author of a recent paper on this topic published in the journal Nature Physics. Balents is a professor of physics and a permanent member of KITP.

Quantum entanglement represents the extent to which measurement of one part of a system affects the state of another; for example, measurement of one electron influences the state of another that may be far away, explained Balents. In recent years, scientists have realized that entanglement of electrons is present in varying degrees in solid materials. Taking this notion to the extreme is the "quantum spin liquid," a state of matter in which every electron spin is entangled with another.

Balents said that quantum spin liquids are being sought in experiments on natural and artificial minerals. A key question posed by physicists is how to calculate theoretically which materials are quantum spin liquids. "In our paper, we provide an answer to this question, showing that a precise quantitative measure of 'long-range' entanglement can be calculated for realistic models of electronic materials," said Balents.

"Our results provide a smoking gun signature of this special type of entanglement that determines whether or not a given material is a quantum spin liquid," explained Balents. The results prove that an emblematic example of this type of problem -- material with electron spins residing on the "kagome lattice" -- is indeed a quantum spin liquid, according to Balents. The kagome lattice is a pattern of electron spins named after a type of Japanese fishing basket that this arrangement of spins resembles.

"We expect the technique we developed to have broad applications in the search for these unique quantum states, which in the future may have remarkable applications in information technologies," said Balents.

Self Improvement: Self esteem - Harlan Morse21's blog

The term self-esteem can be defined as the level to which individuals view their worthiness as an individual. The roots of self-esteem are that, the appraisal is first developed from childhood and continues throughout someone?s life. If it one has low self-worthiness. If anyone has low self-worth, then it means that these earlier experience is simply overshadowed the individual and have come to represent the total sum who believe the individual is. Apart from being the basic features of mental health, positive self-esteem also is a protective factor which assists in attaining better health as well as good social behaviors in its duty as a buffer against the effects of negative impacts. This factor actively promotes health functioning as indicated in life concepts like achievements, being satisfied on top of possessing the capability of copping with disease like cancer. There are various ways through which self esteem get determined by work. This easy critically argues the determinants of our self-esteem.

Added pressure leads to rudeness. It has been shown that, added pressure contributes to a genuine rise in aggression and rudeness in workplace. Rudeness on its side makes individuals feel much devalued. It has be found by psychologists that rudeness is the behavioral fallout of the wide spread losses of loyalty of employers to the workers. While the reverse is also true. This is accompanied by drastic changing market circumstances. In addition, many young employees that have not been trained in social and communication skills usually challenge the authority in an inappropriate manner, and assume an entitlement unattainable against the demands for high productivity, (McGrath par 5).

Our Self-esteem can be determined by the approval and support particularly from workmates. The attachment as well as the unconditional workmate support is much crucial during self-development stage. Because, this is a reciprocal process, being people with positive self-esteem can assist internalize better the positive of significant others.? For example, in their prospective research, (Garber and Flynn, 62), discovered that, the development of negative self-esteem, is as a result of factors like low workmate acceptance, a history of workplace depression, as well as much exposure to negative interpersonal contexts, for instance, negative practices from bosses, having negative feedbacks from others one?s competence, on top of workmate discord and disruption.. As a matter of fact then, it is so much significant that workmate try to support their fellows to develop confidence in themselves.

Another determinant of our self-esteem is discrepancies amongst the competing concepts of the self, like between the idealism and the realty, particularly in the domains of significant. If the discrepancies between the values at work are too large, a person ends up assigning to particular competence field, as well as the perceived self-competencies that particular area, ends up lowering the feelings of self esteem. In addition to that, the existence of discrepancies between self as seen by oneself, and the self that is observed by significant others, that is surface esteem. It has been implied that, this could refer to differences that might end up existing between self-perceived competences and the absence of approval or support by those at work.

Self-esteem could be as a result of cognitive inferential processes. This could be seen as a determinant of both negative and positive feelings of self-worthiness.? This is so particularly when people observe and ends up evaluating their own behaviors in competencies in some specified domains, or the self-efficacy. When their evaluation is much poor, their competencies, particularly in comparison to those of there fellow workmate or weighted to the standards of significant others, as they ends up having more negative self-esteem. This kind of self-monitoring process can ends up being negatively or positively biased by a learned tendency to either positive or negative thinking.

By the middle childhood and adolescence, peers are another determinant of our self esteem. Peers in most circumstances have taken up the vital role in determining our level of self-esteem. There are a times also when schools picks up a vital role in the determination of their students? self esteem via the attitudes they do foster through competitions, and efforts, their achievement recognition ?in sports, academics the arts, as well as their acceptance of any kid as an individual who is much unique.

On the other hand, there exist negative impacts if there is overindulgence in empty complaints. In most cases, such like an issue might result to side effects on the self esteem. Praising as well as acknowledgement, ought to be genuine and legitimate, so that they might be much effective. On the same note, workmates can also become much influential. Research has shown that employees spent much of their time with their workmates as compared to the time spent dealing with other activities like even watching televisions.? On top of all these, the amount of time employees spent interacting with their family members is reduced greatly. Employees are faced with many issues that are related to conformity on top of wormate pressure. This group is pulled between the desires of being seen as a person with values that are much unique, and the desires of belonging to a group that they feel accepted and much secure.

Competence and mastery at work are the factors that determine our self esteem. It has been emphasized that, self esteem develop in people via mastery and competence, that usually emanate tackling and triumphing over challenges at work, even the ones who happen to being the modest. ?It is believed that, parents have the ability of boosting self esteem in infancy by giving them a role that is much active and autonomous in a casual play. As toddlers and infancy develop to an advance stage to self care practices, for instance beginning to feed themselves, parents are then encouraged to let their kids complete their tasks by themselves. No matter how they have done it imperfectly, parents need to avoid jumping in and providing necessary help. For instance, it is suggested that, by allowing one to pick up small pieces of food at the age of lets say 8 month even if on the way, some are dropped, and letting them hold their bottles on their own at the age of 12 month. It has been argued that, children in modern developing countries have an active role in the economic life of the community. They do assist their families by participating in some of the family jobs that are in most circumstances are done by adults. As a result, they tent to have higher chances of mastering tasks as compared to there counterparts in urban areas or developed countries, (Michal, 72).

In many ways, our self esteem is determined by job security compounding the frailty of self esteem. Nowadays, workplace is no longer an arena under which individuals count on fortifying their senses of self. In its place, it has turned to a source of stresses and depression. Workplace stresses in one way or the other determines our self esteem. These individuals that we usually work with subjects as to several stress factors like feeling of inadequacy, dissatisfaction, as well as fear of being branded as being a non-performer. All of these sated issues have a direct connection to the individuals? state of mind. Those work connected problems also faces similar dilemma of much low self esteem and self worth. Issues like retirements, diminishing both mental and physical faculties, sickness as well as loosening of family ties is much responsible for those who are engaged to work for longer times hence feel lonely as well as much isolated.

On the other hand, to build the mood of such individuals, laughter yoga is the fastest as well as the simplest way of improving self worth, self esteem as well as self confidence. It contains the authority of changing the state of the mood almost instantaneously and result to the generation of positive emotions. It has been shown that, the release of endorphins during laughter produces a factor of feel good. It also changes their way of looking at things. It also develops relations and family like bonding that uplifts their spirits, confidence regeneration, which all leads to positive self esteem.

In conclusion, every body has a picture of what his strength and weaknesses are. This mental picture is created through experiences starting at birth. Self esteem has been considered by many as being the most significant element of emotional health. Throughout the argument in the essay, it has been shown that, the speed at which the demand of work is moving at, is so fast that no one anywhere stops to acknowledge excellent performances. The productivity demand is growing so significant that no person feels that enough is being done, every person is just looking at undone workload and feel that nothing is being done. People are working in a manner that they encroaches their downtime hence no time for family as well as friends. In summary, our self esteem is determined by the behavior of individuals in the society especially at work, how people relate to their workmate, workplace stresses, and the performance of youngsters in school.

98% Chasing Ice

All Critics (43) | Top Critics (19) | Fresh (42) | Rotten (1)

The most important documentary of the year.

"Chasing Ice" is a grand adventure, a visual amazement and a powerful warning.

If you're looking for eye-popping evidence that the world's glaciers are melting, don't miss the small-scale but spectacular documentary, Chasing Ice.

The rapid disappearance of ice mountains, filmed over a period of years, is compressed through time-lapse technology into minutes and seconds. The speeded-up effect is harrowing and also, disturbingly, eerily beautiful.

The movie might have given us a bit less of Balog and a bit more of the startling sequences he produced.

Though the filmmaker's point of view on the matter seems quite clear, Orlowski does smartly acknowledge counterarguments against climate change without dwelling on them.

Chasing Ice is a uniquely visual adventure with a chilling message warmed by Balog's humanity.

Still an eco-sceptic? Clap your eyes on this lot. Awe-inspiring, terrifying, transcendently beautiful, and absolutely weighted with significance for the future of the planet.

This is a well made Documentary that becomes very involving because it's just as much about Balog's journey as it is about global warming.

Makes a convincing case that the story of climate change is best told by pictures, not words.

Despite its dire message about rising carbon dioxide levels polluting the Earth, Chasing Ice is a beautiful film, with stunning visits to snowy realms with deep blue water.

Pictures, of course, say more than a thousand flowcharts or Al Gore's PowerPoint presentations. The images here are as glorious as those in any nature documentary ever made.

"Chasing Ice" is that movie that every environmentally conscious person has been waiting for, if only to show their right-wing relatives who parrot the standard oil-industry-funded line that "the science is still uncertain."

Perhaps most eloquent of all -- the most frightening and heartbreaking proof that something is wrong -- lies in the documentary's incredible imagery.

Uses time-lapse photography to show just how drastically fast ice sheets up yonder are turning to water, raising sea levels.

Beautiful photography, chilling conclusions.

Visually spectacular montages of ice floes receding that will make you gasp and move you to tears.

Postpones the inevitable conclusion long enough to tell a good story

So long as filmmaker Jeff Orlowski keeps his focus on the findings from (James) Balog's Extreme Ice Survey (EIS)..."Chasing Ice" is gripping.

[VIDEO ESSAY] ...renders absolute proof of global warming a.k.a. climate change.

Why NASA jumped the gun on doomsday video

A NASA video explains why "The World Didn't End Yesterday" ... more than a week before the date that's been hyped as a purported doomsday.

By Alan Boyle

NASA's latest video debunking doomsday hype comes from the future?? to be precise, from Dec. 22, one day after the expected peak for worries that the end of an ancient Maya calendar cycle will signal the end of the world as well. Some might think that the video, titled "The World Didn't End Yesterday," was prematurely released. But it wasn't: The advance word about the non-apocalypse is a key part of the space agency's plan.

"The teaser for the video explains everything: 'NASA is so confident that the world is not coming to an end on Dec. 21, that they have already released a video for the day after,'" Tony Phillips, the writer and editor behind the NASA Science website as well as SpaceWeather.com, told NBC News in an email.

Phillips says the "day after" angle was his idea.

"I felt it was a lighter and more creative way to approach the topic than some of the other treatments we've seen," he wrote. "Some people have been confused by it, but not all. The unorthodox approach is definitely a conversation-starter, which was our goal all along."

Bashing the bunkum
As the 12-21-12 date approaches, NASA has been taking the lead in telling people that the connection between the Maya calendar and doomsday fears is pure bunkum. By some accounts, a grand 5,125-year cycle comes to an end on Dec. 21, but this year, archaeologists found that the Maya calendar counting system goes beyond 2012, just as our own calendar recycles itself after Dec. 31. For what it's worth, there's even some question whether Dec. 21 is the right date for the Maya calendar turnover.

INAH

The Maya "Long Count" calendar and its connection to 2012 has long been a topic of controversy.

Along the way, the Maya hype has gotten mixed up with other end-of-the-world memes, ranging from monster solar storms to the onset of a threatening Planet X. There's a germ of truth behind some of the memes. For example, the sun really is heading toward the peak of its 11-year activity cycle, but solar maximum won't cause the end of the world. In fact, Phillips has said the upcoming solar max could be "the weakest of the Space Age." Meanwhile, our planet is indeed heading toward a rough alignment with the sun and the galactic center on Dec. 21 ??but that alignment happens every year at this time, due to the winter solstice.

NASA has been spending a lot of time lately separating the scientific fact from the scary fiction.?Last month, the space agency put together a Web page that addresses the frequently asked questions about the 2012 hype, with links to even more information about topics ranging from polar shifts to supernovae and super volcanoes. This may sound like overkill, but it's not: Earlier this year, an international opinion survey conducted by Ipsos for Reuters found that 14 percent of the respondents believe the world will come to an end during their lifetime?? and 10 percent said they were worried that the Maya calendar change-over would mark the end of the world.

What to tell your kids
All this doomsday hype can be particularly troubling for kids, who tend to look to the grown-ups for a reality check. Do your children need some reassurance? These tips from Kids.gov, the U.S. government's Web portal for the younger set, could come in handy:

  • Take their fears seriously. Dismissing a fear with a quick "don't be silly comment" or brushing it aside by telling them not to worry is not going to help. If your children express a fear, take time to sit down and discuss it. This sends the message that you are really listening and that your kids can always come to you and they will be taken seriously.
  • Educate yourself about the topic of their fears. This allows you to speak confidently about the subject and give you the facts when discussing a rumor.
  • Help your child research the rumor. If your child heard the rumor at school or saw something scary on the Internet, sit down with him at the computer and help him to conduct his own research. Discuss the importance of finding credible sources for information and guide him to legitimate, authoritative resources.
  • Take the fear off their plate. For younger children, sit down to discuss the child's fear and then tell them, "OK, from now on I will worry about this for you. You don?t have to worry about this anymore. I?ll look into it and I will let you know what I find out." Make sure to check back with your child once you have researched the topic. Anticipate any questions he may have and plan your responses.

Do you still have concerns about Dec. 21? Are you hearing the Maya hype from your friends? How are you handling all this? Feel free to weigh in with your comments below, and check back next week for our continuing coverage of the doomsday buzz. In the meantime, review our coverage of last year's Rapture rigmarole to get an advance look at how this is all likely to go down.

Prepare for the New Cameras-Everywhere World

Google Glasses. Google Glasses.

Courtesy Google.

Some questions can never be answered. A prominent recent example is whether photographer R. Umar Abbasi, who captured the now-(in)famous image of a man about to be killed by a New York City subway train, could have saved Ki-Suck Han if he hadn't stopped to take the photo of the train bearing down on the victim. Abbasi has insisted that he was too far away, and in the absence of proof one way or the other, we should take his word for it.

It won't be all that long, however, before such questions can be answered. The growing presence of video cameras in public places assures that?and we need to think a lot harder about the implications.

Governments and businesses are mounting closed-circuit video cameras just about everywhere. Surveillance drones, including ones the size of tiny insects, are going to be flying over and around us soon. That's Big Brother. Little Brother is burgeoning, too. More and more people are carrying cameras with them. Typically, these come in the form of mobile phones, but wearable cameras are growing in numbers and shrinking in size. Not too many years from now, lots of people will be wearing ?heads-up? camera/display combos (such as Google Glass) that capture videos of pretty much everything they see. Unless we turn from the course we've set as a society, we'll soon arrive at a day when every square foot of every subway station?of just about every place, really?is being recorded at all times, and probably from multiple views. And all of these devices, capturing higher and higher resolution images plus audio, will be connected at high speeds to digital networks.

When that happens, at least a few things will be predictable.

For example, the choices made by editors will still matter. Mass media are not going to disappear entirely. Even if we witness the demise of bottom-feeders (like the New York Post, which in this case put the subway picture on Page One with a lurid headline), we'll still have media organizations with reach and clout. Interestingly, there's been no outcry about the New York Times' decision to post a surveillance-camera shot of a man who's about to murder another man. The key differences are a) a passer-by didn't take the picture; b) the police are trying to find the murderer; and c) the Times didn't troll for readers with a seamy headline.

Over time, the more important choices will be made by the audience. Even if ?mainstream media? (whatever that means) choose to behave with common decency, there will be no shortage of other outlets for gruesome pictures and videos that aren't legally obscene or (like child porn) just plain criminal. Not long after the 2001 terrorist attacks, major media outlets made the lockstep decision to stop airing videos of the planes crashing into the World Trade Center or people jumping from the burning towers. But these are easy enough to find online. With more and more videos, it will increasingly be up to you and me to make our own decisions.

Meanwhile, the role of the professional spot-news photographer won't merely change. It'll just about end. People in that business should be looking for new ways to make a living. As I wrote in my book Mediactive several years ago, a cameras-everywhere world makes it much more likely that an ?amateur? will get the most newsworthy images. But because tabloid-style media will always have an audience, probably a big one, new kinds of content marketplaces are sure to emerge, giving non-pros a way to sell and license the most newsworthy material. Look for bidding wars will erupt for items that are sufficiently interesting or ugly or titillating.
